Project KIDS Pedagogy

Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Elements of Project KIDS

• Subject Matter Lessons– Mathematics– Language Arts– Science– Social Studies– Vocational Arts

• Interdisciplinary Topics– Authentic Topical Contexts– Connects Subject Lessons

Gardiner’s Multiple Intelligence• Although I disagree with

Gardiner’s idea of many linear intelligences, I agree that intelligence is not itself a single linear function

• I believe intelligence is a fluctuating interrelationship among at least three spatial, one temporal, and one relativity dimensions

Multidimensional Intelligence

• Its manifestations aside, it’s clear that different people will process knowledge in different ways at different times; therefore, education should have alternatives

• Project KIDS provides many alternative interdisciplinary topical contexts in which to explore subject lessons

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #1: Nature of the Learning Process. Project KIDS is an intentional process to construct meaning by introducing a context from a subject area of strength, and building from that strength into subject areas of relative weakness.

Page 7: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #2: Goals of the Learning Process. Project KIDS students must create meaningful presentations of interdisciplinary study for each topical context explored. In doing so, students will demonstrate both subject area learning and relative perspective.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #3: Construction of Knowledge. Project KIDS students are encouraged to start a topical context from a familiar subject area of strength before building into other subject areas of relative weakness. Building on strength yields relevance and success.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #4: Strategic Thinking. By learning a topic from many different subject areas, Project KIDS students engage many parts of their brain to build understanding. Using this array of learning strategies improves the retention of constructed knowledge.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #5: Thinking about thinking. In creating a presentation at the conclusion of each topical context, students will be asked to explain their choice of interdisciplinary paths. In doing so, each student must consider how learning was constructed.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #6: Context of Learning. Unlike traditional education, where subjects are organized into classes, the use of technology in Project KIDS allows each individual student to follow the topic path through the subjects in a manner that capitalizes on strengths.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #7: Motivational and emotional influences on learning. Whereas a traditional educational environment focuses on course completion, Project KIDS focuses on mastery of lessons at the student’s chosen pace. Each lesson counts toward graduation.

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #8: Intrinsic motivation to learn. With Project KIDS, students are encouraged to explore those topical contexts that are interesting or relevant to them personally. By engaging student interest, curiosity is the foremost motivator toward success.

Page 14: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #9: Effects of motivation on effort. With each student’s interest and curiosity leading the way from subject areas of relative strength to subject areas of relative weakness, each step builds upon previous success, thereby reducing tendency to quit.

Page 15: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #10: Personal development influences on learning. Because Project KIDS allows students to choose both the topic and the path through the topic, each student chooses a learning path consistent with their development and pace of learning.

Page 16: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #11: Social influences on learning. Although students may engage in different subject lessons on different topics, the social influence of peer-group classrooms will ideally encourage team learning and support within the peer-group.

Page 17: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #12: Individual differences in learning. The foundational principle of Project KIDS is that each individual student must have the capacity to choose both the context of learning and the path to building from strength toward weakness.

Page 18: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #13: Learning and diversity. By deploying a flexible curriculum, Project KIDS allows students to include both cultural and learning differences in their individual student- centered learning experience.

Page 19: Project KIDS Pedagogy Exploring Kinetic Interdisciplinary Digital Schools from a variety of perspectives on education theory

Learner-Centered Education

• Principle #14: Standards and assessment. Project KIDS assesses learning during each subject lesson and uses a rubric-guided, authentic assessment presentation to measure interdisciplinary mastery before proceeding toward new material.

Progressive Assessment

• For reiterative exercises (such as math problems) students will be required to show10 correct, including at least the last 5 attempts.

• Authentic assessment compositions require all students to relate topic and subject matter to their individual situation
