What is adverb?▪An adverb is a word that is used to change or qualify the meaning of an adjective, a clause, another adverb, or any other type of word or phrase with the exception of determiners and adjectives that directly modify nouns.
1.When? She always wakes up early.2.How? He drives carefully.3.Where? They go everywheretogether.4.In what way? She eat slowly.5.To what extent? It is terribly hot.
This is called adverbial function and may be accomplished by adverbial clauses and adverbial phrases as well as by adverbs that stand alone.
Adverbs of Manner
▪ -tell us the manner or way in which something happens. It answers the question how. Examples:
▪ 1.He speaks slowly. (How does he speak?)
▪ 2.They helped us cheerfully. (How did they help us? )
Adverbs of Place
-Tell us the place where something happens. It answers the question where.
Examples:
▪ 1. Please seat here. (Where should i seat?)
▪ 2.They looked Everywhere. ( Where do they look?)
Adverbs of Time
-tell us something about the time that something happens. It answers the question when.
Examples:
▪ 1. He came yesterday. ( when did he came?)
▪ 2. I want it now. ( When do i want it?)
Adverbs of Degree
-tell us the degree or extent to which something happens. It answers the question how much or to what degree.
Example
▪ 1. She entirely agrees with him. ( How much does she agree with him?)
▪ 2.Mary is very beautiful. ( How beautiful is Mary?)
Adverb List▪ There are many different words that
function as adverbs. The following list is broken down into segments which list adverbs by function.
▪ Many adverbs end in "-ly". This makes it very easy to spot the adverbs in most sentences.
