Wake up…You must wake up… A voice echoed through his mind, shattering the silence he was in, theone he had known forever. He looked around, confused, scared. He had known only the darkness that

surrounds him, that had surrounded him forever. The voice came again, louder than before.

Beowulf…you must wake up…You are ready…Beowulf? Is that my name? Who’s talking to me?

Questions like these swirled around in his head, slowly awakening his conscious. Memories of a time

that has been lost long ago flashed before him. He began to explore the boundaries that surrounded hissmall world. He noticed now that a warm liquid surrounded him. His movements were restricted by

what seemed to be cords attached to his body.

Beowulf…the time has come…for your rebirth… The cords attached to him popped off, dangling inmidair. His eyes opened for the first time in 10 years. The only thing he saw was the color orange.

Groups of bubbles leapt for the sky, until they slowly disappeared from sight. He opened his mouth,

attempting to take a breath of air, but only inhaled the liquid. It slowly began to drain. He swamupwards, taking a gasp of stale air as he got to the surface, coughing up the liquid he had inhaled.

His face was greeted with a sharp slap of cold. He took a breath and dove back underwater. Voiced

 penetrated through the surrounding liquid.

“Motor control of subject appears normal.” “Brain activity stable.” “Reflexes to stimulus are normal.”As the liquid drained, faint figures of people began to appear. He reached out to them, but was blocked by a barrier. After a minute of draining, his feet finally touched something solid. He tried standing, but

collapsed back into the diminishing liquid. As the last liters of the substance drained away, the figures

behind the barrier began focusing into distinguishing shapes. There were three people behind the glass,

one female, two male. All were wearing a lab coat and glasses. The tallest one stood on the right. Hisglasses gleamed from the light coming from above, blocking the eyes. His bald head reflected the lights

coming from above. The woman was the shortest, standing in the middle. Her long, dark hair was held

together in a ponytail, reaching down to her mid back. The man on the left held his arms in front of him, hopping around in a hysteric manner with an idiotic grin on his face. His short, blonde hair was spiked

back behind his head. The tallest man was the first to speak.

“Welcome back to Earth, Beowulf.” His deep voice came through the sound system surrounding the

chamber that he was in. The voice was comforting, but Beowulf couldn’t help but notice that it held noemotion.

Welcome back…? I was here before? Faint visions of his past life appeared before him. The pictureswere blurred, but he can clearly remember the face of a woman. Is that…my mom…? Questions began to

arise, all of them on varying subjects. One of them prevailed over the others.

“Why…am I here…?”

“You’re gonna have to be more specific than that.” The voice came from the man on the left. He

received angry glares from his two partners. He grinned sheepishly and continued talking. “Well, if youmean right here, in this lab…you’re here because you are an experiment.”

“Experi…ment?”

“Yes. You were born as a genetic experiment of ours. Your purpose was to see if we could alter a fetus’sDNA to get rid of genetic diseases before birth.”

“Did…it succeed…?”

“Yes, it did.” Beowulf smiled slightly. He took comfort in the fact that he wasn’t put to waste.

“However, there was one abnormal thing that came out of it. Within your genetics, we found two strandsof DNA.”

“Two…strands…? Genetics? DNA?” He didn’t understand one thing that they were saying.

“You are part human, part wolf.” The voice of the tall man interrupted what the other man was going to

say. “Those two strands we found were from two different species. One of them was the human

genetics, which is what we were experimenting on, and the other…was from the endangered GrayWolf.” He paused for a moment, looking at the woman standing to his right. She nodded to him. “The

wolf DNA didn’t seem to hinder you at all, so we let you go with your parents. For three years, you have

performed exceedingly well for your age. At your 4th birthday, you already had the mind of an eightyear-old. However…at night, after the party…something happened.” He paused again, letting Beowulf

suck in all that was shown to him. “You were transformed. The genetics of the Gray Wolf beganattacking the human genetics, causing the wolf DNA to become dominant over the other. Thetransformation was brought upon by a lack of sunlight. It is unknown currently whether it’s the lack of

those rays or a lack of the reaction the skin has to sunlight to produce Vitamin D.” He paused once

again. “Once the DNA of the wolf became dominant, your body’s cells began dividing at a rapid pace.

Bones began to reform, become more wolf-like. Hair follicles began producing hair at a rapid pace, much like how cancer cells divide. Skin stretched and sagged to conform to the new skeletal structure.

Quite literally, you have become…a werewolf.” Beowulf stared at him for a moment. As he was talking,

memories of the transformation began to appear before him. He remembered the pain that heexperienced, the fear that he had felt. He shuddered at the thought of it.

“Your dad called us to investigate the matter.” The woman spoke this time. “When we tried to performtests on you, your fear got the best of you. You went berserk, and we had to put you under. We feared

the worst, so we put you in this container you are in now. Ten years have passed since you were

conscious in this world.” Beowulf shuddered again, but not because of fear. Only now did he realize that

he was freezing cold in the circulating air. He also noticed that he was naked. The scientists noticed that, and called for someone to bring him clothes. He came in through a door on the left of him. He was

wearing a full-body chemical suit. He hesitatingly advanced towards Beowulf, stretching out his arms,

which contained a pile of clothes. Once he grabbed the clothes from his arms, he dashed away, whimpering. He stared at the clothes for a while. The pile consisted of underwear, a pair of blue jeans, a

black shirt with a dragon graphic, and a gray hooded sweatshirt. Slowly, he began to put all of them on.

Once he was finished, the scientists began talking to themselves again. He was beginning to get annoyed

at the constant talking to each other. It made him feel like they were hiding something from him. Heknew it was going to take a while, so he looked for something to do.

Beowulf walked around the chamber he was held in. He was surprised to find that the room that wasonce filled with liquid suddenly had household accommodations. He took a closer look at the new

objects and saw that they were attached to removable panels. His eyes shifted to the mirror that was

positioned above the sink that had appeared. He saw himself in the reflection. Though it was a bitdistorted, he could at least see himself for the first time in ten years. He was a medium build, quite tall

for a fourteen year old. His face was the only thing that caught his attention was his face. Although he

was only fourteen, he had the face of someone much older. He could faintly see whiskers of a beardunderneath his chin, along with the beginnings of a moustache. He brought his gaze to his eyes, which

gleamed in a deep golden color. As he moved his head to the side, he saw the pupils glow in a deep

yellowish color. His brown hair covered his forehead in massive tangles reaching to his shoulders. He brushed aside his massive bangs, and saw a small ring of metal on his forehead. He looked at the

remains of the tubes hanging from the ceiling. He silently growled at it for giving him that. His gaze

moved upward, where he saw a pair of big, furry…

“Sorry to have kept you waiting, Beowulf,” the woman said over the intercom, interrupting his thoughts.

“We were discussing as to where you were going to stay in the lab.”

“Stay? What about my parents? Why can’t they pick me up and take me home?” he asked them. The

scientists looked at each other uneasily. They began to talk to each other frantically, as if none of them

wanted to answer his question. He couldn’t take it anymore. “Alright, what’s going on? You guys have been talking to each other constantly without me hearing. I want to know what’s so special to be hiding

from me.” The scientists stared at each other. The glasses hid their eyes, but he could feel a touch of

sympathy in them. The shorter man came up to the intercom and replied.

“Beowulf…your parents…umm…how do I put this…” The taller man pushed him out of the way andtold him one thing that he didn’t want to hear.

“They’re dead.” Beowulf stood still in disbelief. “Your dad died a while ago from physical exhaustion,

while your mother died of cancer.” The room remained silent for a long time. Slowly, he began to break

down into uncontrollable sobs. “We’re sorry for your loss, but that’s just the way that life works. No onecan live forever.” He continued to cry, ignoring what the man had said. He had just been reborn, only to

have his life taken away again. He wanted to return to the darkness that he knew before. He wanted to

return to the never-ending silence that he had been trapped in for ten years. Everything that was handedto him was stolen away by the people in the lab coats. He hated them; he despised them. His composure

broke, flinging himself into a full-blown fury. He staggered around the room, ripping the mirror off the

wall and throwing it at the glass barrier that stood between him and the scientists. The glass shatteredand alarms rang throughout the building. The scientists hid underneath the desk, hiding themselves from

him. He pummeled the door that separated his chamber from the halls where the scientists roamed. He

broke it down, his fists bleeding from the shrapnel that exploded from the door. The scientist in the

chemical suit came to him with a gun. Beowulf stepped closer and closer to him, while the scientist backed further and further away from him. He pounced towards him, and the scientist fired at him. A

knockout syringe landed straight into his chest. He collapsed on the floor, slowly losing consciousness.

One word stuck out before he blacked out.

Why…?
