Continued from page 1generous corporate sponsors. Ran-som is surprised and gratified with how big it’s grown over the years. “We didn’t have a master plan,” he says. “It just kind of happened.” He marvels at how people get invested in the mission of Project Giveback. “People who volunteer take owner-ship,” he says.

According to Ransom, discover-ing the SHARE Food Network was a game changer for Project Giveback. “We used to go to Giant or Shoppers Food Warehouse,” he said. They were paying full price for their gro-ceries. “Then, one of our guys, Clar-ence Labor (long time SHARE Advi-sory Board Member), suggested we check out SHARE,” he said. “That year we were able to touch signifi-cantly more people with the same amount of money.” SHARE helped accelerate the growth of Project Giveback. It’s a partnership that has lasted at least 15 years.

This year, the 24th Annual Thanksgiving Food Distribution will take place on Saturday, Octo-ber 17th at the DC Armory at 2001 East Capitol Street, SE. Hundreds of volunteers will gather to live up to the name of the organization and “give back” to the community. They will be sorting food into gro-cery boxes to be provided to fami-lies to help them enjoy the holidays.

Twenty-five hundred Value Packag-es from SHARE will literally double the number of families that Project Giveback is able to reach over the days when they shopped at Giant.

Ransom has embraced the ex-ample set by his parents and the guidance of the Gospel of Luke. And he is setting an example for the next generation of Millers. His son, Ransom Miller IV is follow-ing in his father and grandfather’s philanthropic footsteps. This year will be his 17th time working on the annual food distribution. He is also leading the student group of volun-teers at Project Giveback. And he is dedicated to helping the home-less. In fact, for his school’s senior thesis, he chose as his goal to get one homeless person off the street. As Ransom said when heard of his son’s plan, “I’m so proud of him, I almost cried.”

The partnership of Project Giveback and SHARE is the perfect marriage of two organizations who complement each other beautifully. SHARE’s ability to provide large quantities of fresh, nutritious food at extremely low prices vastly en-hances Project Giveback’s mission to help families in need to enjoy the holidays. It’s a match made in heaven.

Health Benefits of Onions!

One cup of chopped onion contains (approximately):• 64 calories• 15 grams of carbohydrates• 0 grams of fat• 0 grams of cholesterols• 3 grams of fiber• 2 grams of protein• 10% or more of the daily value

for vitamin C, vitamin B6 and manganese

• Onions also contain small amounts of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium and the antioxidants quercetin and sulfur

Onions are part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs, which also includes garlic, leeks, scallions and chives. Allium veg-etables have been grown and used for thousands of years, not only for their distinctive and wonder-ful flavor, but also for their potent medicinal properties.

Heart-Healthy BenefitsIt turns out that this pungent

vegetable is also amazing for your heart. Quercetin, a naturally de-rived PDE4-selective inhibitor found in fruits, vegetables and tea and is a compound that is highly concentrated in onions, can also help prevent plaque buildup in the arteries. Reducing this plaque buildup helps to prevent against heart attack and stroke, so keep-ing onions in your diet is a heart-healthy must!

Anti-Inflammatory BenefitsSuffering from inflamma-

tion? Onions can help! The same quercetin in onions that is great for heart health was also found in a study in the American Journal of Physiology, Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology to relax the airway muscles and provide asth-ma relief. The sulfurs in onions were also found to be an efficient anti-inflammatory agent, accord-ing to a study published in the journal International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology.

Eliminating free radicals from the body can potentially have life-saving benefits. Free radicals can cause damage to the body if anti-oxidants are unavailable to inhibit and destroy them. Luckily for on-ion lovers, the quercetin in the on-ions can help to break up the mu-cus in your head and chest while boosting your immune system. Onions also contain allicin (also found in garlic), which slows down and kills a variety of viruses and bacteria.

Detoxifying BenefitsPlacing an onion on your feet

when you have a cold can actually be a great way of helping you to recover faster. The practice has been widely used in Chinese med-icine for thousands of years. Your feet contain thousands of nerve endings that act as access point to the internal organs and your ner-vous system.

The phosphoric acid in the onion enters the bloodstream and

helps to purify the blood and pull out toxins (this is why you should never leave a cut onion in your fridge – it will pull the toxins from your fridge and then you eat the onion later…yuck!). This helps you become healthier and better equipped to fight off inflammation and whatever virus is currently ailing you.

Here’s how to use onions to help detoxify your blood:• Take an onion (any color) and

cut into flat slices.• Place the onions at the bottom

of your feet and pull a thick pair of socks over the onions to keep them in place overnight.

• Go to sleep and in the morning discard the onions.

Using onions can be a safe, in-expensive, easy and delicious way to improve your life! Let us know in the comments below if you’ve tried the onion sock trick and what you thought of its detoxifying abilities!

1. Remember that your thoughts and feelings are power-ful.

Everything in your life is a re-sponse to your feelings. How you feel about yourself is how you shape your reality.

2. Stop trying to be somebody and start opening up.

Stop looking so desperately for answers and drop your need to know everything. Give yourself permission to explore and uncover what’s fun for you and what you really love. Stop mimicking other people and pretending to please them, and start opening yourself up to find what you love.

3. Create something new. Most people are scared of try-

ing and failing because we are told we are supposed to fit in to existing stories created for power and control. Use your imagination to create something new that ex-cites you.

4. Be a model of truth and great possibilities.

Make it your mission to be a model of positive, fun, loving possibilities. The shortest way to get there is to express your deep-est truths. When you serve as a model for speaking your truth, you let others know it’s okay for them to do the same.

5. Encounter your deeper sto-ry.

Everyone has a deeper story, something that they fantasize about doing if they could. What’s your deeper story? What do yearn and long for? Hint: You already know what it is; you just lack the courage to acknowledge it be-cause you don’t think you’re good enough.

6. Experience your longing. It’s a big leap to go from

dreaming to realizing. Take a step to act out your longing and experi-ence its unfolding. If you let them,

your feelings will lead the way.7. Recognize when and how

you disappear from the present moment.

Know your insecurities and pay attention to your triggers so you can bring yourself back to the present before hurting someone else. It’s your job to maintain your positive space.

8. Know what brings you back. What engenders a feeling of

belonging and connection in your life? What stops the obsessive thought looping? Build reference points. That’s how you can always find your way back home.

9. Recognize that freedom is knowing what you love and letting it embrace you.

You already know enough. Stop looking for guidance and start formatting your life around experiencing what you love. Seek the experience and it will find you.

10. Remember that your gift is

how you handle your insecurities. When you do what you love,

you’ll act on instinct, without hav-ing to put too much thought into the knowledge you don’t yet have. But that thing you love to do—that’s not your only gift. Your other gift is how you handle your insecurities and feelings of inade-quacy, when you do get caught up in your head. This is what shapes your life and sense of belonging.

11. Take intentional actions. When you set intentions and

act on them, you create a natural flow. Directing that flow is how you shape your reality.

12. Consistently ask yourself: What is my relationship?

Everything is relationship to everything else. What is your re-lationship to yourself? Your real-ity emanates from how you feel about yourself.
