Context of Pre-Construction Phase
The big picture
Between now and January 2012:
• The SPDO will become the (legal) SKA Project Office (SPO)
• Interim Director-General (Michiel van Haarlem ex-ASTRON)
• Will hold management & system authority for the whole project
• Will oversee the global effort – largely via Work Package
Consortia (i.e. Participating Organisations + Industry)
• The baseline plan for the Pre-construction phase is the PEP
• Funding for the PEP is essentially ‘national’ – with some
contracts possibly emanating from the SPO

Work Package 10 - Power
WP10.1 – Engineering and Management
The overall management of the work package as well as interfaces with other
WPs.
WP10.2 – Intra-System Power Design
Review the system design for SKA1 (and the top-level design for SKA2) from
the perspective of power minimization and optimization of intra-system power
distribution.
WP10.3 – Power System Design
Produce a complete, costed power solution for SKA1, and a detailed plan for
the extension of the solution to SKA2. Includes areas such as EMC/RFI,
monitoring and control, and protection and test.
WP10.4 – Power Systems Operation Plan
WP10.5 – Strategic Power Planning
Assessment of the applicability of emerging power solutions to the SKA
Work Package 10 - Scope
In:
• Power transmission, conditioning, and
distribution into the site ‘core’ facility (MRO),
and the MRO Support Facility (MSF).
• Uninterruptable (local) power supply to
critical components at the MRO.
• Power distribution around the ‘core’ facility
to the local arrays – up to 50? kms.
• Independent power generation (up to 8
MW) for remote ‘off-grid’ SKA stations
• A ‘green’ energy component seen as
favourable
Out:
• Design / development of large
scale (say, > 10MW) power
generation / storage.

Goals of Today...
1. A good understanding of the content and scope of the Power
Work Package, context for power in WA, and engagement
options for industry.
2. What technology options are ‘in’, or ‘out’?
3. What does the power work package consortia need to know for
(a) the Pre-construction PEP planning phase (pre-June 2012),
and (b) the Pre-construction PEP design delivery phase (post-
July 2012).
4. Confirm a list of participants interested in investment in the Work
Package bidding phase over the coming six months, and
preparedness for later contractual involvement.
