Objectives

A2.1 Understand & document the social and historical processes of domestic water use in Australian cities in order to: • Inform socially acceptable & effective water sensitive policies & interventions

A2.2 Identify & prioritise target behaviours that will assist in the transition to water sensitive cities & Test efficacy of interventions to influence identified behaviours

A2.3 Identify & evaluate methods to engage communities with sustainable urban water management• Establish baseline water literacy & identify community-friendly terminology &

visuals

Progress & findings to dateA2.1

• Report on review of the sociological & cultural lit on domestic water use

• Identified key dimensions relevant to understanding water use cultures

• Appointed PhD student

A2.2

• Through industry workshops & literature review identified key water sensitive behaviours in relation to efficiency, pollution, flooding

• Appointed 2 PhD students

A2.3

• Conducted literature review & interviews with industry representatives

• Identified: 1) which water concepts /issues are not well understood, 2) principles for effective engagement

Next steps

Water histories of Bne, Mel, Perth

Identify water use cultures

Prioritisation & sequencing of key

water sensitive behaviours

Benchmark Australian water

literacy & attitudes to Water sensitive

strategies

Potential links

A2•Barriers/facilitators to community

acceptance/uptake of WSUD

• Identification of the ways in which community are most likely to contribute to water sensitive

urbanism

* Identification of the best ways to communicate/engage about

WSUD to build policy support

B1.1: high resolution local rainfall scenarios as engagement strategies?

B2.1: Demonstration site as engagement strategy?

B2.2 What role can community behaviour play in remediation

guidelines?

B3.1: What resistance might there be to stormwater harvesting & how can these resistances be overcome?

B3.2: Health benefits of green infrastrcuture/WSUD as rationales

for change
