INTRODUCTION
For Constructed Landscape Final Project, students are required to select a 10 meter x 10
meter site within Taylor’s University Lakeside campus to propose and come up with a green
space.
Our group has selected the roof terrace located on Level 7 at Block E as our site.

The site chosen is a bare roof terrace situated at the end of the corridor occupied with
more than 15 classrooms. It is regularly visited by some students from time to time; however the
site has its faults.
Since the site faces west, it receives the most intense sunlight thus reducing its potential
for maximum use. The lack of landscape features also puts off students to visit the area for
specific purposes.

After studying and further analyzing the chosen site, students are then required to come
up with a concept and produce master plan, planting plan(s), costing, construction details as well
as a maintenance plan for the proposed green space – all of which will be reflected in this report.

Accessibility
The site records an average temperature of 266C (lowest) to 336C (highest).The site also records an average wind speed of 3km/h (lowest) to 11km/h (highest).
The precipitation level is 20% with humidity of 89%.
CONCEPT
From studying and analyzing the site that we have chosen, the initial design concept was
inspired to create a green roof terrace. Green roofing systems help keeps the top floor of a
building cooler by reducing the rooftop temperature during hot weather.

After careful consideration of the site’s natural elements, we have decided to evolve with
a morning terrace concept. The morning terrace will provide amenity space for relaxation
purposes and a functional seating area. The integration of green roof to the proposed morning
terrace would also have a cooling effect on the area as mentioned before.
The morning terrace would consist of elements such as a vertical garden, two seating area
with tables and individual pergolas as well as outdoor stools.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Construction Detail 1 – Turfing (Softscape)
Turfing is the installation or laying of turf – a surface layer of earth containing a dense
growth of grass and its matted roots; sod. This process is essential for the proper growth of
vegetation and plants on what used to be an impervious asphalt surface, especially in creating a
green roof space.
A green roof is typically composed of two layers – the vegetation itself and the medium
or substrate in which the vegetation is growing in. Apart from the two main layers, most
commercial green roof systems also consist of additional five to six components – above the roof
deck, waterproof membrane, protective layer, growing medium, vegetation materials and
irrigation system.

The installation process consists of three steps; measuring and ordering, soil and site
preparation, and finally the installation itself.
The layers of a green roof must accommodate drainage and protect the building from the
elements with a waterproof membrane. Those layers must also create a growing area, provide
support, irrigation and root protection barriers.

Construction Detail 2 – Pergola (Hardscape)
Pergolas are structures consisting of framework supports – columns, posts and rafters.
These structures can be used to cover an area but still leaving the area exposed to the elements
and nature.
Common roofing materials include metal, which is the type of material being used for the
individual pergolas in the proposed green space. Metal pergola roof materials are considered to
be the most durable and more permanent than any other materials.

The addition of this unique and simple structure acts as an overhead structure over the
two tables, creating a shaded outdoor space for the seating area.
