Whenanemergencystrikes,whetheritisamulti-caraccidentorahurricane,firstrespondersneedtocoordinateaneffectiveresponse.andattheheartofaneffectiveresponseistheradiocommunicationsbetweenofficersinthesameagenciesandacrossmultipleagencies.aroundtheworldpublicsafetyagencieshaveworkedwithindustryleaderstodevelopandenhanceastandardtoenableinteroperablecommunications.

thetIa-102suiteofstandardsisusedforthedesignofproject25(p25)interoperabledigitaltwo-waywirelesscommunicationproducts.Itisanevolvingstandarduniquelydevelopedbybothequipmentmanufacturersandpublicsafetyuserstomeettheneedsofthepublicsafetycommunityaroundtheworld.thestandardenablesinteroperabilitybetweenmultiplemanufacturer’sp25products.

establIsHed and fully Vetted standardproject25hasatwenty-yearhistorywiththepublicsafetycommunity.Itwasestablishedinoctober1989whenapco(associationofpublicSafetycommunicationsofficials),naStD(nationalassociationofStatetelecommunicationsDirectors),ncS(nationalcommunicationsSystem),ntIa(nationaltelecommunicationsandInformationadministration),andnSa(nationalSecurityagency)agreedtothecreationoftheapco-naStD-feDproject25.Sincethebeginning,thestandardhasbeenuniqueinthatithashadtheinvolvementofpublicsafetyagenciesalongsideindustryleaders.

WorldWIde adoPtIonproject25iswidelyadoptedbypublicsafetyagenciesacrossnorthamericaincludinglocal,county,tribal,stateandfederalagencies.Italsohasthesupportoftheu.S.DepartmentofHomelandSecurity(DHS).theDHSofficeofemergencycommunications,incoordinationwiththeofficeofInteroperabilityandcompatibility,developedtheannualSafecomrecommendedguidanceforfederalgrantprograms.theguidanceforfiscalyear2011specifies,“granteesmustensurethatdigitalvoicesystemsandequipmentpurchasedwithfederalgrantfundingiscompliantwiththeproject25(p25),unlessotherwisenotedinaprogram’sgrantguidance.”*

aroundtheworldgovernmentagenciesfromaustraliatorussiatoSouthamericahavealsoadoptedproject25systemsfortheirmissioncriticalcommunications.

p25hasalsobeenadoptedbymanyindustriessuchasutilities,airports,transit,petroleumandchemicalcompaniesthatrelyonmissioncriticalcommunicationsandinteroperabilitywithgovernmentalpublicsafetyagenciesinanemergency.
