THE HONOURABLE JULIA GILLARD was sworn in as the 27th PrimeMinisterofAustralia onJune24th, 2010and servedinthatofficeuntilJune 2013. She is the first woman to ever serve as Australias PrimeMinister or Deputy Prime Minister.

As Prime Minister and in her previous role as Deputy Prime Minister,Ms Gillard was central to the successful management of Australiaseconomy, the 12th biggest in the world, during the Global FinancialCrisis.

Ms Gillards other achievements include the development of several

significant national policies including: education reform, a carbontax, and the nations first ever national program to care for peoplewith disabilities. Ms Gillard also worked to improve the provisionand sustainability of health care, aged care and dental care, ledthe restructuring of Australias telecommunications network andsecured a stronger architecture forAustralias relationshipwith Asia.Under her leadership, Australia was elected to the United Nations

Security Council.

Mariana MazzucatoMARIANA MAZZUCATO is Professor in Economics at the University of Sussex, whereshe holds the RM Phillips Chair in Science and Technology Policy. Her cutting-edge

research focuses on the relationship between innovation and growth. Her most recent

book,The Entrepreneurial State, has received glowing reviews from the likes of the

FinancialTimesand theEconomist. In it, she argues that active state investment has

been thesecret behindmost radical innovations which have fuelled growth, from green

technology tobiotech andnanotech.Mariana isalso Coordinator of a European Commis-

sion FP7 project on Finance Innovation and Growth and is the Economics Directorof theEconomic and Social Research Centre's Innogen Centre.
