Career Advisory Teams Report on ProgressSixcareeradvisoryteamscomprisedof60education,business,andcivicleaderswereformedin2006tomatchthecareerclusterstructurethatwasimplementedinourhighschoolsystem,andto:1)evaluatecurrentcurricularofferings,2)proposerecommendationsforcurricularadjustments,3)proposefuturecareerfieldcurricularofferings,and4)identifyopportunitiesforstudentcareerexperiences.Severaloftheirrecommendationswereincorporatedintocurriculumchangesforthecurrentschoolsyear.Otherrecommendationsarebeingconsideredinfutureplanning.Progressreportsfromthesixteamsaresummarizedbelow:

Ag and Natural ResourcesBy Virginia Sloan

TheAgricultureandNaturalResourceCommitteefoundthemselvesengagedindiscussionsonthechanginglandscapeofMontanaagricultureandforestryandfocusedontheopportunitiesfornewcurriculumforstudents.Withinputfromadiversegroupofindividualsthecommitteediscussedtrendsintheindustryandofferedavarietyofcurriculumrecommendationsthatreflectthejobsoftodayandtomorrow.ThecommitteetouredboththeHighSchoolVoAgCenterandtheNWMontanaAgricultureResearchCenterinCreston.Thesetoursrevealedtheinnovativeandnewresearchoncropsaswellasthepotentialcareersinnaturalresources

andagriculture.Thecommitteerecommendedexposuretocareersinnaturalresourcesatthe9thor10thgradelevel.ThecommitteethoughtbothhighschoolsshouldhaveaccesstotheVoAgCenterastheyhavehadremarkablesuccessintheirprogramsatpreparingstudentsforcareersinagricultureanddevelopingleadershipskills.

TheintentofthecurriculumrecommendationswastodesignapathwayinsuringstudentsaresuccessfulintakingadvantageoftherunningstartprogramsatFVCC.

ThebusinessleadersrecommendedthefocusonmarketingintheVoAgneedstobetargetedtotheconsumerandthoughttheseskillscouldbewovenintothecurrentclass

schedule.ThesebusinessadvisorshavecommittedtoanongoingmentoringrelationshipwiththeVoAgteacherstoinsuretheysupportandprovideperspectiveonthecurrenttrendsintheagricultureindustry.TheForestryrecommendationsincludedaclassonCareersinNaturalResourcesandFoundationsforNaturalResourcesandtweakingtheforestcurriculum

toinsurerelevancetotoday’smarketplace.UrbanforestryandtheskillsneededforturfmanagementandlandscapingwerediscussedasaneedresultingfromthesignificantgrowthanddemandfortheseservicesintheFlatheadValley.Thecommitteeidentifiednumerousorganizationsandagenciesthatcouldofferexperientiallearningandinternshipopportunities.

Kalispell Chamber Approves Educational Agenda

TheKalispellChamberboardofdirectorsrecentlyapprovedaneducationalagendatohelpdirectitseffortsinworkingwiththeeducationandworkforcesystems.Throughpolicyinitiatives,businessoutreach,anditsgrassrootsnetwork,theKalispellChamberwillstrivetofindsolutionsthatpreserveourpeopleasthisarea’sgreatestbusinessassetanditsstrongestfutureresource.ThesepolicyinitiativesarebasedontheresearchoftheCareerAdvisoryTeamsandon220interviewswithCEO’sofFlatheadbusinesses.TheChamber’sworkwillfocusonthreekeyareas:

•EncouraginginnovativeeducationmodelssuchasCareerClusters,earlyenrollmentincollege-levelcoursesforcredit,youthapprenticeshipandinternships,andonlinelearning.

•SupportingpoliciesthatfacilitatethetransferofacademiccreditswithintheMontanaeducationsystem,particularlybetween2-yearand4-yearpublicinstitutions.

•Developingstatewidedatasystemsthatoffertimelyandaccuratecollection,analysis,anduseofhigh-qualitylongitudinaldatatotrackstudentachievementandteachereffectiveness.Thesedatasystemsshouldincludeuniqueandprivacy-protectedstudentidentifierstotrackindividualstudentsandteachersacrossclassroomsandschools.

Flathead Valley Community College Career Clusters UpdateBy Kathy Hughes

Inacompetitivegrantprocess,FlatheadValleyCommunityCollegehasbeenawardedtheCarlPerkinsTechPrepgrantforthestateofMontana.Thegrantprovides$475,000ayearforthreeyears(renewableforfourmore)withthegoalofcreatingarticulatedpathwaysfromsecondarytopostsecondaryeducationinthe6majorcareerfields.BillRoopeistheprojectdirector.

FVCCfacultyinvitedareahighschoolfacultytoajointin-servicesessiononOctober18th.DanZornfromDistrict5,JimNealandKarenLonghartfromtheFVCCfaculty,JoanHerzogfromGlacierHighandJaredShewfromFirstInterstateBankstartedthedaywithapaneldiscussionentitledPerspectivesonSeamlessEducation.

Over100highschoolstudentsaretakingwelding,constructiontrades,cabinetryandelectricaltechnologyclassesatFVCC.TwoofthehighschoolteachersareteachingtheseclassesinFVCC’snewoccupationaltradesbuildingduringtheschoolday.

ACollegeforaDayprogramisbeingplannedforTuesday,February19.Areahighschoolstudentswillbeinvitedtoexperiencecollegeclassesandactivitiescenteredaroundthecareerclusterfieldsandpathways.

Inpartnershipwithareaschooldistricts,FVCChasappliedforaFulbrightScholar.Ifsuccessful,theprogramwillbringaChineselanguageinstructorwhowillteachdualcreditChineselanguageclassesaspartoftheefforttobring21stliteracyskillstostudents.

andInformationTechnology.Throughtherecommendationsofthiscommitteethefollowingcourseshavebeencreated:GreatAmericanLeadersandDigitalMultimediaandBroadcast.Otherdiscussionpointsincluded:JobChats,Expansionofthepublicshowingsofstudentwork,Aseriesofcomputerprogramming/softwaredevelopmentcourses,ChemistryinArt,SeniorProject,CareerFieldCommunicationsCourseandothertopics.Thecommitteeexpressedconcernthattheschoolsmaybetryingtodotoomuchtooquicklyandadvisedthatchangesbemadeincrementally.Concernwasalsoexpressedregardingtherestrictivenessofsomeofthesoftwareprogramsthatmaybetaught.

TheBusinessandManagementAdvisoryTeamidentifiedskillsitfeltwereimportanttosucceedinthiscareerareaincluding:strategicandanalyticthought,communicationskills,basicmathfundamentals,communicationsandpresentationcapabilities,andtheabilitytoworkwithinagroup.Severalofthechangestheteamrecommendedhabeenincorporatedintothe07-08curriculum.Forexample,recommendationsonaddingcurriculumwithafocusonpersonalfinanceskillsandsoftskillswereincludedintheFreshmanAcademiesandthe21stCenturyLiteracies

atbothhighschools.AnotherrecommendationwasthattheEntrepreneurshipcourseshouldbeoneofthelastcoursestakensothatitcouldbetheculminationofpriorbusinessclasses.

TheBusinessandManagementTeamalsosuggestedsometopicareastoconsiderforfutureclassesincluding:internationalbusiness,hospitalitymanagement,personalfinanceII,andadvancedpresentationandmediaskills.AnoverallgoalwastoencouragefurtheralignmentandcollaborationoncoursesbetweenKalispellSchoolsandtheFlatheadValleyCommunityCollege.

WhatanamazingyearitwasworkingwithSD#5ontheengineeringandtechnologycluster.Toeveryonethatparticipatedthankyouforyourtime.Manyideas,suggestionsandactionswerediscussedandplannedforimplementationbySD#5.Weallknewthiswouldbeahugetaskinlightofopening

ofGlacierHighSchoolandrestructuringoftheJuniorHigh.Wow,theydidit.Wehaveseenthestudentregistrationbookrewrittenwithoursuggestionstaken,existingclasseschangedtobemorerelevanttotoday’sworkenvironmentandevennewclassescreated.Themetals,automotive,woodsandtechnologyteachersaretobe

congratulatedforalltheireffortimplementingnewprograms.ItistimeforbusinessestostepupandhelpkeepthemomentumandexcitementgoingasweenterintoPhaseIIoftheprocess.LookingforwardtoworkingwithSchoolDistrict5andallourbusinesspartnersagain

TheHealthandRelatedServicesCareerFieldAdvisoryhasfocusedtheirattentiononmakingCareerFieldelectiverecommendationsandadjustmentstocurrentcourseofferings.Thishasresultedinchangesthatarereflectedinthe07-08courseofferings.Forexample,GlacierisofferinganupdatedAppliedFitnesscourse.Thereareapproximately120studentsenrolledinthiscourseduringthe07-08schoolyears.Inadditiontocurriculumrecommendations,theadvisoryhasstartedtogatherresourcessuchasindustrypublications,equipment,andsoftware.

Topreparestudentstosucceedandprosperinhighschoolandensurethatourstudentsgraduatewiththeskillsneededtobeeffectivecollegestudents,workers,citizens,andleadersinthe21stcentury,andsustainingAmerica’scompetitiveedgeintoday’sglobalmarketthedistricthasaddedacourserequirementforfreshmancalled21stcenturyliteracies.Theessentialelementsofthiscourseare:highschoolorientationforsuccess,studyskills/timemanagement,technologyliteracy,economicliteracy/personalfinance,humanrelations/teamwork,careerexploration/introtocareerfields,informationliteracy.

FlatheadandGlacierHighSchoolsareinthemidstofapositivecurricularchangebuiltaroundacareerclustercurricularmodel.OurFieldAdvisoryTeamsmadeupofbusinessandeducationrepresentativeshaveworkeddiligentlythepasttwoyearstocreateastructurethatprovidesourstudentswithaneducationthatismarkedbyrigor,relevanceandrelationships.OurFieldAdvisoryTeamshaverefinedexistingelectivecoursesandcreatednewelectivecoursesthatfitwithinacareerclustercurricularapproach.DualcreditopportunitiesthroughapartnershipbetweenourhighschoolsandFVCChavebeenexpanded.OurnextstepistoworkwithourFieldAdvisoryTeamstocreateCareerExperiencesforourstudentsinwhichtheyhavegreateropportunitytoexplorethemanycareeroptionstheyhaveavailabletotheminourvalleyandbeyond.ThedevelopmentofCareerExperienceswillnowbecomethefocusofourFieldAdvisoryTeams.ThiseffortwillbeginwithourfirsteverFreshmanCareerFieldFairwhichwillbeheldatFlatheadHighSchoolonJanuary10andatGlacierHighSchoolonJanuary11.Detailsonthiseventarefoundelsewhereinthispublication.Yourparticipationwouldbegreatlyappreciated.FieldAdvisoryTeamswillbemeetinginNovembertobegindiscussionsontheCareerFieldFairandthedevelopmentoffutureCareerExperiencesforourstudents.

TheEmploymentExtravaganzatheBiggestEmploymentEventinOurValleyissponsoredbyFlatheadCountyWorkforceandFlatheadValleyCommunityCollegewithSchoolDistrict#5asoneoftheorganizingpartners.TheSixCareerFieldsisthebasesfororganizingandpromotingthisupscaleemploymentshowcase.TheEmploymentExtravaganzaisscheduledformid-AprilandisprimarilydesignedforhighschoolandFVCCstudents.“Atoneplaceandoneevent”studentswillhave

opportunityto: •Meetwithover100prospective

Ford Foundation Invites Kalispell Application

TheFordMotorCompanyFundhasinvitedKalispelltoapplyforparticipationintheirCareerAcademyInnovationCommunity.Ifsuccessful,fundingfromthisprogramwouldadvancepartnershipsamongeducators,parents,businessesandothercommunityresourcesinordertobroadenlearningopportunities.

TheFordMotorCompanyFundhasidentifiedbestpracticesincommunitiesthathavedevelopedandsustainedsuccessfulcareeracademynetworks.Thesebestpracticeshavebeensetforthina12-PointActionPlantoguidecommunitiesseekingtodevelopcareeracademynetworks.Anapplicationisbeingpreparedforsubmissionthismonth.

2004–FrankLockeraidesinfuturehighschooldesign;communityapproves$55millioninfacilitybonds.

2005–TrusteesdirectCareerCurriculardesignfortwohighschools;EdBarlowaddressesschoolstaffandcommunityonimportanceof21stcenturyskills;KimGreeneoftheNationalAssociationofCareerandTechnicalEducationconsultswithDistrictrepresentatives;CurriculumTransitionTeamsestablished.

2006–KalispellChamberlaunchesKalispellBusinessEducationInitiativetosupportcareerclustercurriculumdevelopmentinKalispellSchools;60businessandcivicleadersadviseoncurriculuminsixcareerfields.

2007–CareerClustercurriculumimplemented;$55millionofmiddleschoolandhighschoolfacilitiesand$20millionofcommunitycollegefacilitiesopen;KalispellhostsMontanaCareerClusterConferencewith350attendees.

recommendationswerelookedatandsomeofthosehavebecomeareality.CoursesthatweresuggestedthathavebeenaddedareacourseinstudyingleadershipcalledGreatAmericanLeaders,anothercoursethatwillbeaddedinthenextschoolyearisacareerfieldcommunicationscoursetohelpwithwritingpertainingtothecareerfields.Theimportanceofaseniorprojectisanotherareaoffocusthatwillbefurtherexplored.ForeignLanguagewasseenasanimportantpartofallstudents’highschoolexperienceandwiththat,takingtwoyearsofaforeignlanguageinhighschoolispartofreceivingmeritdistinctionupongraduationfromhighschool.Theteamwillbeginsoonworkingonfindingopportunitiestobringcareerexperience,resourcesandconnectionstoenhanceourstudent’slearningexperienceinthisarea.
