A delaide 2017 began with an Opening ceremony at the indoor Basketball Centre. Fewer players were in attendance

this year, which was somewhat disappointing, but the speeches were well worth listening to. Our successful ITF

World Champions and Medallists were acknowledged, which was gratifying, as it was our best year ever – 21

GOLD.

The courts at Headquarters were synthetic grass, and some had shared lines with hockey, which was a challenge from time to

time. The lawn courts at Kensington Gardens, Reade Park and Woodville were beautiful. Volunteers were at every centre,

catering to our needs and taking a genuine interest in our wellbeing. They had ice on hand, and well-stocked kitchens for

meals and between - match snacks.

Each state held a team dinner on Monday or Tuesday night – and NSW’s was sensational – at “Living Choice Retirement

Village” did I say “retirement village”? Yes, catered by the restaurant “Damien on Fisher” – unsurpassed food and excellent

service, with such ambience that you usually only dream of. No-one had a bad word to say about it! (Some said it was the

BEST fillet steak they had ever tasted!)

Our 2016 “Senior of the Year” – Allan Cocks was presented with his award, and he was stunned! (See Allan’s profile,

elsewhere in this issue).

Some snippets:

Fantastic week of tennis!! Loved the venues everyone so welcoming it was like a small country town. Lots of fun with a great

bunch of people!! Jacinta Howden.

Tony Robinson:

We all, except Neil Blinman, had a wonderful time in Adelaide. When Doug Pareezer and I arrived in Adelaide by air,

everyone was so helpful and obliging. The local bus driver said that if we would stay on his bus a bit longer, he would drop

us at the front door of where we were staying on his way back to the depot. So “Cook’s Tour” and no lugging cases.

Nine senior men stayed at the CWA in North Adelaide and all agreed it was a "home away from home". Of course there was

a fire alarm at 2 am one morning, but that added to the fun. Thanks Sue, in particular, for looking after us.

Tennis-wise we started slowly, but we were all hitting the ball well by the last two days except for Neil who spent a week in

hospital after a bladder infection got much worse.

Courts were excellent and I did not see one example of bad calls or poor sportsmanship.

Extra

Big John from WA, who played our team and won my medal, has an interesting day job.

He pipes in the cruise ships as they enter Albany at dusk and then rushes down to the wharf and does it all again in full

regalia and bagpipes.

From Monique Wakefield:

Vets from all corners of the country and the globe flew to Adelaide for their chance to compete for an Australian title at the

National Championships.

All players battled it out in hot, steamy conditions and tried to keep cool (physically, mentally and emotionally) throughout

the days and even the smouldering nights. The sweat dripping in our eyes didn't deter us from the challenge at hand, or cause

any bad line calls! The good sportsmanship was the tournament's foundation and was topped with great tennis, sore muscles

and of course, sunburn.

My sister, Nicole Pinchbeck, dragged me out of a four-year retirement by bribing me to go on a Barossa Wine Valley tour

with her - and play some tennis while we were in town. We were proud to make it to the 35 Women’s doubles final but had

our hearts broken in the third set tie breaker, losing to the talented pair from Queensland - Kerryn Cyprien (nee Whittaker)

and Linda Roberts.

I had the pleasure of meeting my gifted mixed

doubles partner who travelled from Brazil, Jair

Montovani. We were happy we made it to the finals

but were unfortunately outmanoeuvred in the third

set tie breaker by the adept Monika Biernat and

Eddie Myers. I guess I should work on my tie

breakers over coming months.

The socialising off the court was as entertaining and

as satisfying as the game itself! It was enjoyable to

see players from states, territories and countries

mingling at social events and... at the tournament

bar. It was great to see so many familiar faces and

to meet some new ones.

O nce again the three day BIG4 Bungalow Park Seniors Tennis Tournament held on 17, 18 and 19 February 2017 was hugely successful. This year we had 220 competitors participating in 8 events of which 55 were new entrants to

this tournament. Day 1 saw the Ladies and Men’s Singles events played on an extremely hot day. There were 15 ladies and 31 men who entered the singles events. Day 2 started with a shower of rain and a few showers during the

morning. However our hardy participants played on and matches were able to be finished in the Ladies and Men’s Age Doubles events with the Combined Age Ladies and Men’s Mixed Doubles events played in the afternoon. A great 3 days of tennis was had by all with a large number of competitors coming from the ACT and Sydney, and as far away as Melbourne, Forster and Harden. We also had a number of players form Batemans Bay, Narooma and the Shoalhaven. It was great to see so many of our visitors return again with some players never missing a tournament in the nineteen years it has been running. A special thank you to the Milton-Ulladulla District Tennis Association committee members and a number of volunteers who helped tirelessly over the three days. Mary Lou Barclay was assisted in the Tournament Office by Val Crook , pictured lower CENTRE. NOTE: A cavalcade of pictures featured on the Front Page of the Ulladulla Times! And there were MORE pics in the Sports Section - Seniors really made an impact! The club received a grant to enable the building of a replacement deck, plus an added deck on the right hand side of the entrance, which allowed players to congregate and watch tennis on both sides of the clubhouse. The Saturday night

barbecue was comfortably catered outdoors, and there’s more funding to come!

Cheerio Corner It’s the year we gain another “Nonogenarian” – Congratulations to Colin Luck who, being born on March 11, 1927, will turn 90. Col joined Tennis Seniors 45 years ago, so for HALF his life he’s been connected! He is presently still playing tennis at Rockdale and Scarborough Park with a group of friends three times a week, and looking after his very ill wife Marge at home as well. Col’s “claim to fame” is his selection in the Bitsy Grant Cup team when he was 75, and they came home with the GOLD!

Samantha Reid has had 3 months in Westmead Hospital, attempting to discover the reason for her significant back pain. After two operations, they have finally diagnosed a form of cancer that nobody in Australia has. In fact, according to Sam, only around 30 people in the world have it. It is quite debilitating, and the pain still persists on a daily basis. We send her our best wishes and giant (gentle) hugs for her recovery. Best wishes Sam, we would like to see you well again. Pamela Muir gave husband Bob a worrying time recently when she had surgery on a brain tumour at Royal North Shore Hospital. Tests have shown that it was benign, and Pam is progressing well. Bob was very busy learning the art of texting while Pam was in hospital. She’s taking Bob on walks around Manly now in between sleeps, and is looking forward to challenging him to a game of Singles! To John Anderson of Dural, we send our heartfelt sympathy on the loss of his wife and best friend, Cassie Anderson AKA Caz Mortimer, who finally succumbed on January 31, to the dreaded illness she suffered. John paid a loving tribute to Carole in his eulogy - we are sorry the miracle didn’t happen. Robin Doucas and her tennis friends will miss her too.

History of Teams’ Competition

T eams’ competition has been conducted since 1971 when it was for 45+ Men only, in

Sydney or Melbourne. Then, in 1975 Women Over 38 were included, in Adelaide. Each

year since then, the venue has rotated between the states of Australia and a few in

New Zealand from time to time. In 1990, a change from Australasian to Australian

meant that Wellington 1990 signalled the last NZ venue until 2006, when Christchurch was asked

to step in for a “one off”. (New Zealand teams have however, been welcome to participate each

year.)

The inaugural “State Trophy” was contested in Hobart in 1985, with 95 teams participating. With

the growth to over 100 teams each year, when it comes to NSW’s turn, Sydney has been

overlooked as a venue in view of the problem of finding a large enough venue in proximity to a

centre used as Headquarters. 1991 saw the City of Newcastle enter the circuit, with many courts

in Broadmeadow, and many more in fairly close proximity, with little or no traffic to contend with.

Again in 1998, 2005 and 2011 Newcastle was host city, and there are moves again to acquire a

venue in 2019, when the rotation comes back to NSW as the host state. Discussions are currently

underway.

Players were once “selected” in teams after nominating, but there has been an initiative to

encourage more participation by allowing people to form their own teams with a group of friends,

who are a similar standard or age as themselves. Anyone can still nominate and be placed into a

team – either from our own state or another state in need of additional players.

The record number of teams is 181 in Adelaide 1994, and only 3 times since then has the number

dropped below 100 teams.

Competitive team Doubles is played in a friendly spirit on either clay, grass or synthetic grass

courts depending on the venue, with the next Carnival coming up at the Gold Coast in 2018. All

courts at HQ are synthetic grass, with HQ being at Mermaid Waters, the Home of both Gold

Coast Seniors and Miami Grass Clubs, adjacent to each other in Pizzey Park.

Players must wear their State Uniform, in all matches, (see pics on Facebook and in the Gallery on

the TSA website). These are usually purchased from the State Secretaries or their uniform

coordinators.

Players look forward to getting together each year, in January, for tennis and social events which

include a State Dinner, various theme nights and on the Friday – the Presentation Dinner which is

the culmination of the Teams’ Carnival, a night for “dressing up” – and dancing!

January is traditionally chosen, despite the heat, in view of the fact that facilities at centres are

available at that time when clubs and coaches are in recess. Tennis Seniors Australia uses the

results at the Individual Championships, which follow the Teams, plus results at other ITF ranking

tournaments to select representatives for overseas teams to play in the ITF World

Championships.

The results from Teams’ and Individual Championships in the past are available on the website:

www.92computing.com.au Simply scroll down the Home page to “CAT Tournament Archives” and

select the year – Steve Longworth updates this website regularly.

(CAT stands for Computer Assisted Tournaments).

Senior of the Year 2016

Allan Cocks

7

B orn Parramatta, 16th April 1944

My mother and father were social tennis players so it was only natural that my sister and myself both

played, I started at 5 years of age. I began playing Junior Comp at Glenquarry Courts "Parramatta Granville

Headquarters", at 9 years of age and because I lived near the

courts I was playing every day if I could. My Coach at the time was Clive Eaton.

By 12 years of age our team graduated to Saturday after-noon. By the time our team was playing in Division 3 it

started to split up and the new players were Cheryl White, Dawn Wolf and Mick Marchment. With Mick Marchment we

won the A Grade Milo under 16 years tournament at Par-

ramatta Granville and also won the A Grade at White City. Also played President Cup and Tremlett Cup and our team

was the first from our district to win our division. I decided to have a break from tennis, at that time not realising it would

be 43 years before I picked up another tennis racquet.

I played Catholic Youth Organisation Rugby League (CYO) with my mates and through the CYO I discovered that they

played competition squash when the league season was over, that was it, I was hooked on this new game.

My first club was Campbell Street Squash Centre in Par-ramatta, starting in B grade before going through to A grade.

My next club was Parramatta Leagues Squash where I played

A grade and second grade. A position became available at Penrith Leagues Club to man-

age the squash courts and gym which I was successful with. I stayed there 8 years. I was Coach and Club Coor-dinator at the Northmead Squash Centre for 3 years.

I moved the family to QLD and leased Daisy Hill Squash Centre where I coached and organised all the competi-

tion teams in conjunction with the club grading committee and stayed for 8 years. As I was homesick , I moved back to Sydney to be closer to the family. I continued to play squash for another 10 years and joined Masters

Squash. At 61 years I had the desire to play tennis again. No wooden racquets, no loam courts...what’s this green stuff

you play on and why are the balls not white anymore?

Anyhow after that whinge, it’s the best decision I have made in a long time and thank you to my many friends in the Seniors who have welcomed me. Allan

Postscript: Allan participates in most of the Country tournaments each year, and encourages others to attend as

well, sometimes arranging a lift here or there for players who need it. RC

Membership still growing!

The numbers are still GROWING! Well done to the girls in the Eastwood/Thornleigh

Midweek Comp - seven teams from these grass roots of tennis represented NSW in the

Teams’ Carnival in Adelaide. Next year at the Gold Coast, we hope to break a record by

recruiting many more members!

Each tournament this year will be our chance at promotion - and we ask all members and

tournament directors to make it a priority. The tournaments so far this year have been

extremely productive, with over seventy members enrolling - see the list on Page 12.

A huge thanks and congratulations to Hadrian Cullum and Dave Ridley for their fantastic

recruitment skills so far this month.

State Dinner - “Damien On Fisher”

W ow! What a venue....when our players heard it was at a Retirement

Village, they chuckled and gave me funny looks! However, “Damien

On Fisher” is a top class restaurant and they certainly excelled. The

entire restaurant was set up for us. As we entered the foyer, (we could

have been at a 5-star Hotel), we instantly knew we were in for something special. 153

players had booked for the dinner, and they all received a pleasant surprise. Everyone

agreed the service was outstanding, nothing was a problem and our every whim was

catered for. Drinks were delivered with a minimum of fuss, and the main course meals

were absolutely superb. People felt free to move around the room, and then we were all

seated for the occasion of the presentation to the “Senior of the Year” – a special person who

was stunned by his selection.

President Mick presented Allan Cocks with the award, and he was lost for words! Allan has

played Senior tennis since taking up tennis again in 2005, and travels around the state, hardly

missing a tournament. Al has played teams every year in January, with various issues from time

to time, and in Adelaide his team won their Section! His players were: Andrew Perry, Col Hoade,

Owen Gallagher, Dallas Wade, Alan Sacks and Joe Zucker. WINNERS!

Robyn’s Moat

D ecember 2016. Three

days of sunshine, heat and humidity greeted

194 players as they converged on Nelson Bay Tennis

Club to compete in the annual

“Dave Matthews Seniors Tennis Tournament” over the weekend

with 494 matches played across 56 events utilising 17 courts around

the Port Stephens Peninsula. Friday morning was singles play

with the afternoon being American

doubles. Saturday and Sunday was Men’s, Ladies and Mixed doubles.

As with 2015 there was an influx of new players which is tremendous

to see and just goes to show how

popular this tournament is with the tennis seniors’ community. This

year my target was to reach 200 entrants, which was achieved

however a few people had to

10

withdraw through injury reducing

the final number to 194 which is still bigger than 2015. The themed

Wimbledon day again proved popular with the majority of

players getting into the spirit of the

day and wearing all white tennis attire. Friday morning Singles

proved very popular with all men’s events having 5 or more players

whilst ladies Singles had 10 players across two events which was

pleasing to see. A special mention

and thank you to Kim Tanner who travelled from Queensland to play

in our tournament. Friday afternoon saw 40 players

across 8 groups compete in the

American doubles. Some of these players played singles in the

morning so I can only imagine how they were feeling at the end of the

day. The ambient temperature on Friday was around 33

degrees and very humid

and that was off the court. The conditions were tough

but everyone seemed to get through it OK.

I am keen to have

feedback (with suggestions) for 2017, so

please get in touch. 0466 154 580 Steve Taylor

Ian King’s Calamity in Adelaide

“After 3 years recovering from

injuries and 3 operations and then a

torn shoulder, Ian was finally

returning to the game he loves when

Oops, he slipped on the course sandy

gutter outside South Park courts in

Adelaide at 7.30 am arriving to play

on Day 3 of the teams’ event. The

lower shin was sliced and sickening

to look at, but after hospital

treatment and having to return home

to Wollongong early for continuing

treatment, he is ready to try and

play again at Kooyong! " Merilyn King

Warren Welch has embarked on a

trip around Australia while his foot

heals from Plantar Fasciitis. He may

as well do that since he can’t play

tennis!

S ummer has played a role in keeping the weather Hot Hot Hot! At Leumeah, on the weekend it kept up its reputation! Singles on Saturday had groups of 35s, 50s and 60s men plus 35+ ladies in 2 groups. Michael Jackson had 98 players battling the heat, and did a fine job in catering to their needs – with cool drinks and a barbecue , manned by energetic volunteers! Monique Wakefield, who turns 35 this year, said: “the 35 ladies battled it out in the steamy conditions at Leumeah. We could

have played more sets in this event, but the 37-degree heat deterred us! Monique played with her talented sister Nicole (Pinchbeck) and they ran away with the win! Alison Radford and Trudi Allan gave them a run for their money, in the 37-degree heat. The men were out there for hours in similar temperatures, Hitesh Behl, Grant McSorley and Jason Clark taking the money (35s), with Pat Staunton and Rick Iliani (50s) and George Penney, Phil Hazell and Don Mortimer (60s) prevailing over their opponents. Well done to Owen Gallagher, giving away 10 years, to be Runner-Up in Section B. It was great to see Dave Ridley there, promoting his new Goulburn tourney, coming up at the end of the month! March 31 – April 2. (Entry form on the website.) Editor: 98 players converged on Leumeah for this annual NRT, congrats to Michael Jackson for a very well-run and enjoyable tournament for all concerned. It was wonderful to accept many new members into our ranks!

Southern Districts NRT, Feb 4 & 5

From the Secretary’s Desk

At our AGM in December, it was approved that the following changes be made to the Constitution:

1. Deletion of Clause 15.4 (c). Now this does not restrict officers to 3 consecutive full terms in

office. This will allow retiring officers to offer themselves for re-election in the event of insufficient

nominations being received for Officer positions on the Committee.

2. Addition of Clause 17 in the Regulations and By-Laws "Making a Complaint". This defines the

procedure to be adopted regarding complaints about player's conduct and behaviour at Tennis Seniors NSW

sanctioned tournaments. It deals specifically with complaints about someone's conduct and behaviour

because it is unsafe, unprofessional, offensive, intimidating or discriminatory. It could also be because

someone has broken important tournament rules of TSNSW players' Code of Conduct and Tennis Etiquette.
