Dear Guests

We are proud to present the sith edition

of the Flicks International Student Short

Film Festival. We have selected 19 films

from all over the world, they will be

shown during the course of the festival.

They show the diversity of the different

cultures and of the student filmmakers

who produced them.

Flicks is an organization which stems

from the cooperation of two of the

most internationally and culturally

involved student associations in

Groningen, namely the Studen Culture

Centre Usva and ESN (Erasmus Student

Network). Flicks is a film festival that

gives national and international

students filmmakers the opportunity

to participate in a challenging and fun

initiative by sending in their short films

for our loved film festival, this year

screening the 5th,6th and 7th of March.

During the festival there will be a jury,

which will carefully select the winner

of all three days. The unique part of

Flicks is that it is a cultural event that

is organized by and for international

students. We hope to see you there!

About UsvaStudent Culture Centre Usva is the

cultural facility of the University of

Groningen. Usva wants to encourage

students to develop themselves and to

inspire them by art and culture. Besides

that, Usva is the cultural platform in the

city where students have the opportunity

to meet and engage with culture.

At Usva, you can follow various courses

in the field of art and culture. They also

organize events and every week you

can see theatre performances in their

theatre. Aside from that, Usva supports

students in realizing cultural projects.

Financially, but also with facilities and

knowledge. It is also possible to rent halls

or the theatre. Additionally, Usva offers

students the possbility to to be part of the

executive board or to volunteer in one of

Side Program

In their own words, KIN is a the dream-pop-

noise making anglo/dutch quartet from

Groningen. Their sound sits in a no-man’s-

land between driving beats and shivering

trip-pop. After defecting from a grubby

corner of the British Isles (Manchester) to

Groningen in 2011, Kim R. Foster formed the

band; released the album ‘Flickering’ in 2012

and the found-sound E.p., ‘SOON’ in 2013.

They have just recorded their second album

with producer Simon Archer (The Pixies/The

Fall) in Salford (UK) which will be released

later this year and are currently showcasing

their new material.

Introduction JurySteven WillemsenSteven is a Ph.D. candidate in Film

Studies at The Groningen Research

Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG)

of the University of Groningen. He holds

a Research M.A. degree (cum laude)

from the Research Master Literary

and Cultural Studies Program at the

University of Groningen. His current

research project is On the Cognitive &

Hermeneutic Dynamics of Complex Film

Narratives. Steven is a junior lecturer

in Film Theory, working side by side

with Dr Miklós Kiss and Dr Annie van

den Oever. Steven is the co-author

of Unsettling Melodies: A Cognitive

Approach to Incongruent Film Music by

Dr Kiss.

Thomas van den BergThomas graduated last year with honors

and holds a Master of Arts degree in

Film Studies from the University of

Groningen. Together with Dr. Kiss, he

is working on co-writing a book about

videographic film studies, which is

an elongation of his master thesis.

Apart from that, Thomas is making live

soundtracks to silent films for about

four years. He is currently working on

writing music for new documentaries

with songs cut from parts of the music

he wrote for those films. In addition,

Thomas is also working for a brand new

VOD platform – Cinetree in Utrecht.

Ari PurnamaAri is a Ph.D. candidate in Film Studies at

The Groningen Research Institute for the

Study of Culture (ICOG) of the University

of Groningen. He holds a Research M.A.

degree (cum laude) from the Research

Master Literary and Cultural Studies

Program at the University of Groningen

with specialization in the Stylistic Studies

of the Moving Images (Film and Television

Arts).

His master’s thesis “Cinematizing the Bad-

land: Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad and the

Visual Stylistic Eclecticism of Contemporary

American Basic Cable Television Drama”

(2011) analyzes the workings of the

cinematization of television fiction

aesthetics in a specific domain of American

‘high-end’ televisual drama. He is also an

independent filmmaker and has made

two short films with the last one funded

by the CinemAsia Film Festival Amsterdam

2012. It is entitled Our Attachment to Rice

(Dutch: Onze Band Met Rijst) and it tackles

the theme of the ageing Indo-Dutch

community members in the Netherlands.
