Dear FrienDs,Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to an exciting 2014.
Attention Downton Abbey fans— great news! The wait is over. Downton Abbey, Season 4, premieres on January 5th at 9:00PM on WXXI-TV. And we have also received word that Season 5 will soon be in production!
For our radio listeners, 2014 marks a very special year for WXXI. Classical 91.5 celebrates its 40th anniversary and AM 1370 turns 30. You may have been among the visionary group of WXXI friends who helped to start these stations. Thank you for your continued support of our radio services that have expanded greatly in the past 40 years.
When we signed on WXXI-FM 91.5 in 1974, the station played an eclectic blend of folk, jazz, talk, and classical. There was even a children’s radio program. Ten years later, 91.5 FM became a full-time classical station and AM 1370 signed on as a full-time NPR station, along with local news and talk.
Just as we promised when we signed on 40 years ago, Classical 91.5 is dedicated to spotlighting the rich culture we have in Rochester. AM 1370 keeps you informed with in-depth coverage of local, national, and international news that sets our news department apart. You can also hear Morning Edition and All Things Considered and great adult album music on WRUR 88.5 FM, thanks to our broadcast partnership with the University of Rochester.
We’re proud to engage our community in dialogue about important issues like the future of education for our children. Our community forums—such as last month’s Common Core panel with State Education Commissioner John King—along with our news reports and talk shows are critical to an informed and involved society
In 1974 we could not have foreseen the future needs of our community or anticipated the emerging technologies that continue to shape our industry. Today we have six public radio stations, plus Reachout Radio, a service for our visually-impaired friends and neighbors. We also provide four public television channels with a variety of programming, including more than 12 hours of Ready-to-Learn programs for children each weekday, and a five-screen independent movie complex at the Little Theatre with a café that showcases art and live music.
If you have a “smart phone,” you can download a free App that will let you keep up with the news from WXXI or listen to our radio services, from classical to news to adult album music. If you’re at your computer, you can click on “Listen” and then “Live Radio Audio Streams” on WXXI.org to access our stations. Many of your favorite television shows are available on your computer, too. Just click on “Watch,” then “Full Television Episodes.”
We can only imagine what the next 40 years will hold and we hope you’ll share in the journey. Whether your love is music, news, educational or cultural programming, I hope you will agree that WXXI makes our community a better place to live, work, and play. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President [email protected]

wXXi is ProuD to announcethat Dialogue on Disability, an annual outreach partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies, designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with intellectual and physical disabilities will expand from a week-long initiative to a year-long one. It was always our hope that the conversation would continue beyond the campaign’s seven days and now thanks to support from the Golisano Foundation it will. Together we will offer TV and radio programming, news features, film screenings with talk backs, and other special offerings throughout the year. WXXI will kick off this year-long initiative in January and you’ll be hearing more about the project on WXXI-TV, AM 1370, and in this member magazine. You can also learn more about this initiative at: WXXI.org/dod.

weDnesDay, January 29 at 10 P.m. on wXXi-tvThis is the intimate and revealing story of Stephen Hawking’s life. Told for the first time in Hawking’s own words and with unique access to his home and public life, this is a personal journey through Hawking’s world. The audience joins him at home, under the care of his nursing team; in San Jose as he “wows” a packed theatre audience; in Silicon Valley as he meets a team of technicians who hope to speed up his communication system; and as he throws a party for family and friends. Hawking also carefully tells Hawking’s life journey, from boyhood under-achiever to PhD genius, and from a healthy cox on the Oxford rowing team to diagnosis of motor neuron disease, given just two years to live — yet surviving several close brushes with death. The film also highlights his greatest scientific discoveries and plots his rise to fame and superstardom.photo: Courtesy of rex Miller

Salinger — American Master’s 200th episode — features interviews with 150 subjects including Salinger’s friends, colleagues and members of his inner circle who have never spoken on the record before as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen. Additionally, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, John Guare, Martin Sheen, David Milch, Robert Towne, Tom Wolfe, E.L. Doctorow, Gore Vidal and Pulitzer Prize winners A. Scott Berg and Elizabeth Frank talk about Salinger’s influence on their lives, their work and the broader culture. The film is the first work to get beyond the Catcher in the Rye author’s meticulously built up wall: his childhood, painstaking work methods, marriages, private world and the secrets J.D. Salinger left behind after his death in 2010.

DOUBLE FEATUREGet your coconut shells. Find an attractive but appropriately-priced shrubbery. Prepare yourselves for the film that was so funny it was banned in Norway. A Monty Python double-header comes to the Little on Saturday, January 25. Monty Python’s Life of Brian starts at 1 p.m., telling the story of Brian Cohen, born next door to Jesus Christ, on the same day. Hilarity ensues as he is mistaken for the Messiah. After Brian comes Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the group’s 1975 smash hit. A set for veteran Python fans as well as those who’ve never heard of the Knights Who Say Ni, this will be one of the silliest days in Little history. The event also coincides with the 2014 reunion run the group will play in London. Their first set of new shows sold out in an hour, and this double feature might too, so watch out for details on the Little’s Facebook, Twitter, and thelittle.org!

Specializing in local seasonal cooking, Tap and Table restaurant opened in Corn Hill Landing in mid-2012. Co-owner Joe McBane points out that Tap and Table – and his first venture Tap and malleT, a gastropub located in the South Wedge – also offers world class craft beer selections. Both locations have won local newspaper reader awards.
Tap and Table is situated on the Genesee River with Rochester skyline views. Its seasonal menu pairs craft beers with each dish. Nearby Tap and Mallet on Gregory Street is in a location that has been a working pub since 1890. Tap and Mallet continues the area tradition and has offered freshly prepared pub food since 2007. Both places frequently change their menus, beverage offerings, and even the artwork on the walls.
An avid WXXI listener, McBane was keen to explore the idea of becoming an underwriter to connect with new potential customers. “There are still many people that have yet to experience the Tap and Table and/or Tap and Mallet, and WXXI is able to reach a wide range with our message. The ability to create awareness about our businesses in an uncluttered broadcast environment was appealing. I appreciate the opportunity to have my message heard and simultaneously support one of my favorite media providers. Personally, I feel World Café (WRUR-FM 88.5, M-F, 2-4 pm) is a superb show and is firmly at the top of my favorites list.”
To view current menus and upcoming events, visit tapandmallet.com and thetapandtable.com Tap and Mallet is also proud to offer a free app for android and iPhone smartphones.
