Message from the President

Welcome to the 2017 GPCA Winter Conference. Thank you for choosing to be a part of this great tradition. We are excited about this year’s conference as we “Develop Tomorrow’s Leaders”. This is the 62nd anniversary for The GPCA Winter Conference at the University of Georgia. Thank you for your attendance and on behalf of the GPCA, welcome to the 2017 Winter Confer-ence – “Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders”. As we look forward to a new era with a new president may we also begin to prepare for the future of our industry. As there will be new ideas going on

in government we need to have new ideas for our businesses and the services we provide. I feel we have put together a conference that will meet the needs of getting our credits while we also learn new ways of doing business.

Whether this is your 1st conference or 62nd conference, we are grateful to you for choosing to attend. Please take full advantage of the different educational offerings that the Winter Conference Committee has planned for this year! From new application techniques and products to new ways of doing business your conference program has the dates, times and places of each educational opportunity.

Dr. Kristen G. van den Meiracker, Ph.D., BCE HPC, Tick-Tock: It’s Tick Prevention Time, Tuesday, January 10, 2017, 5:00 - 6:00 PM, Mahler Auditorium Session covers Tick Species, distribution in US, Life Cycle, Tick Diseases and Symptoms, Tick Removal and Diseases Reduction Strategies.

· Dr. van den Meiracker received her B.S. in Biology from the University of South Carolina and her M.Ed. in Secondary Science Education from Converse College. She pursued her Ph.D. in entomology at Clemson University, where she studied termites and termite baiting under Doctors Pat Zungoli and Eric Benson. Her post-doctoral fellowship was completed at Clemson, with continued studies on temperature effects on noviflumuron and hexaflumuron in termite baiting and termite behavior.

· Dr. van den Meiracker worked as an urban entomologist at Terminix Services in Columbia, SC for two years before returning to academia as a fulltime professor at North Greenville University in Tigerville, SC, where she continued to publish her re-search and was awarded Professor of the Year, served as faculty president, and served on many university committees.

· Dr. van den Meiracker was awarded her BCE in urban entomology in January 2016. After teaching for 25 years, 16 at the university level, she joined JAK Consulting Services in Knoxville, TN to work with her best friend and fellow entomologist, Dr. Janet Kintz-Early. Kristen lives in Greenville, SC with her husband and 5 furry children. She is a member and former scholar-ship recipient of Pi Chi Omega and Entomological Society of America.

· Dr. Suiter is Associate Professor, Urban Pest Management, in the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia. He re-

ceived his B.S. (1987), M.S. (1989), and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from the University of Florida. His research was focused on bait de-velopment for the German cockroach, for which UF received a patent, and biological control/chemical ecology of peri domestic cockroaches utilizing the oothecal parasitoid Aprostocetus hagenowii (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

· Dr. Suiter served on Georgia’s Structural Pest Control Commission and is a member of the Entomological Society of America & the

South Carolina Society.

· In 2006, in cooperation with The UGA Griffin Campus’ Office of Continuing Education, Dr. Suiter developed a Certificate in Urban and Structural Pest Management. Dr. Suiter helps oversee the Anti-Formosan Termite Program, a State-sponsored project whose goal is to eradicate Formosan termites from Georgia when found.

· Dr. Suiter has worked with the pest control industry since 1987 and currently serves on the GPCA Education Committee.

· Marianne Shockley received her Bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia in

1997. Marianne later received her M.S. (2001) and Ph.D. (2009) degrees from the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia.

· Marianne was hired as Program Coordinator in 2001. Utilizing the Tuition Assistance Program, she began a part-time Ph.D. and focused on researching and assessing science teaching and learning in higher education by introducing, integrating and evaluating service-learning courses in entomology through stand-alone entomology service-learning courses and as a component of existing entomology courses.

· In 2010, Marianne was hired as an Academic Professional Associate in Entomology at UGA. Her research interests include program development in the areas of outreach and service, service-learning, entomophagy, forensic entomology, distance education and international program development with an emphasis on assessing teaching and learning in Entomology.

· She currently teaches Entomology Outreach & Service-Learning, Entomology for Teachers, Forensic Entomology and Medical Ento-mology and Insect Natural History in Ecuador.

Jeff Dunn WDO, Termite Trial…Tribulations or Triumph, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM , Master's Auditorium Session will take you through a mock trial on Termite Damage. In addition, the attorney and key witness will discuss proper termite inspections, treatment and paperwork.

· Jeff has been with Northwest Exterminating since 2001 and is the Leader of Sales and has held the positions of residential sales-man, Service Center Manager and Director of Pest Control Operations.

· Jeff received his degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University · Past President of GPCA and has served on numerous GPCA committees over the years in addition to being a graduate of the

Dr. Brian T. Session highlights the ongoing research projects being conducted by the graduate students and technicians at the UGA.

· Dr. Brian Forschler is a Professor of Entomology at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. He obtained three degrees in Entomol-ogy with a major emphasis in Insect Pathology. His undergraduate and graduate work included studies involving insect pathogenic virus, fungi, bacteria and insect parasitic nematodes. The insect systems included forest, turf grass and row crop insect pests for his Masters, Ph.D., and Post-Doctoral appointments, respectively.

· He received both his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Kentucky, his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and did Post-Doctoral work at the University of Arkansas.

· Since 1991 he has been Principle Investigator for the Household and Structural Entomology Research Program (H&SERP) at the University of Georgia. The UGA H&SERP has emphasized development of decision criteria that provide for efficacious, cost effec-tive, and environmentally sound management of subterranean termites, as well as, other cryptic urban arthropods based on an un-derstanding of pest biology.

Alyson Gilleland WDO, Label Jeopardy, Thursday, January 12, 2017, 2:30 - 3:30 PM, Master's Auditorium. Session will incorporate the fun and excitement of the game show Jeopardy with a focus on pesticide labels.

· Alyson leads the Arrow University team in developing and implementing training using various formats. · Develops training that is delivered in a fun and entertaining way. · Alyson has her A.A. Degree in Marketing Management. · Alyson has received the “Beyond the Call” Award and the John C. Millican Award for “’Impact Player of the Year”.

· Ashley is a GA and SC Certified Pest Control Operator and she is an active member of the GPCA, serving on the PR committee and is a 2013 Leadership graduate.

· Ashley earned her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia and received her MBA in finance from The Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.
