• Home Connect Service. Eligible residents can receive free delivery and return of large print library books via the U.S. Postal Service. Specific materials may be requested or a librarian can select items according to patron interest. Items are usually checked out for extended loan periods and overdue fines are generally waived.

• Talking Book Program. This service has been available for many years through the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a program administered by the Library of Congress. We have a player and a rotating collection of Talking Book titles in the Library for you to borrow as well. The player and books are a special format - different from CDs - and are easier for those with challenges to manipulate. If you are eligible, you may apply to receive a player and to borrow Talking Books. This service is free and delivery is through the U.S. Postal Service.

• ZoomText. Several of our public computers are loaded with this software program that enlarges and reads aloud text and images on the computer screen for patrons with visual challenges. Large print computer keyboards are also available.

• Magnifier with a 13” monitor. Available for use any time the Library is open.

• Music & Memory Program. Qualifying families (those caring for an adult with a cognitive condition) are invited to pick up a Music and Memory Playlist Questionnaire at the Adult Reference Desk. A personalized playlist will be recorded for you on an iPod that you can check out on a flexible loan period that is free of overdue fines. Library staff can add and remove songs periodically according to the listener’s preference. For more information about this inspirational initiative that was founded by Dr. Dan Cohen, please visit the musicandmemory.org website or view the documentary DVD in our collection, Alive Inside.

Please also refer to the general pages of our newsletter for information about other Library programs and services that may be of interest to you!

New Tidings and Two RetirementsYou’ve probably noticed that the font of the newsletter has been shrinking of late. No, it’s not your eyes! The space constraint in our six annual publications sometimes makes it necessary for us to cut newsworthy information about services, even with the smaller font size. In a way, that’s a good problem to have, because it’s an indication of how much is happening at your local Library. We felt a change was needed to better promote our programming and services, and to make our newsletter a more effective tool for you to use. So, for the July/August issue, we will unveil a new and larger format that increases the Tidings by four pages. We hope the expanded format makes it easier for you to discover your next library adventure!

In June, staff and patrons will be saying goodbye to two key full-time employees whose combined tenure is 55 years!

Jeanne Whitsit started out as a page at the Library in 1988 and worked her way to the title of Senior Library Clerk. If you’ve checked out a book from the Teen or Adult Departments anytime over the last twenty years, you can be assured that the book passed through her capable hands for processing. Mrs. Whitist has also trained and supervised pages in our Adult Department. Her real labor of love has been the book donations that have poured into the Library over the last two decades. She has

sorted, categorized, stored, and shelved too many books to count, and her work has netted the Library thousands of dollars in extra revenue that come back to the patrons in the form of new materials, programs, and other services.

Terry Selg began her library duties as a Library Clerk in 1988, and she worked through the ranks to the title of Principal Library Clerk. Make no mistake, the buck may pause at the Director’s desk, but it comes to a full stop at hers. Aside from her executive assistant duties on behalf of the Director, Mrs. Selg is the go-to person in the Library for all manner of issues – human resources, facility problems, notary services, meeting room bookings, rotating displays in our lobby and hallway spaces, guard scheduling, records management, and any problem that requires a willing ear. Her sunny disposition, approachable manner, and unmatched organizational skills have made her beloved by the staff.

We wish both Mrs. Whitsit and Mrs. Selg good health and every happiness as they each journey south to begin new chapters in their lives.
