Fall is a busy time for everyone - vacations wrap up, kids head back to school, and sports leagues begin again for a new season. This is also an especially busy time on the Jewish calendar, as we come together to reflect on the past year and prepare to welcome the new year.

These holidays offer plenty of opportunities throughout the season to work together, talk together, think together, and celebrate together. We’re excited to honor 70 years of Israeli independence with a year-long Israel at 70 celebration, and to launch new opportunities for teens and teen professionals to become more involved in the community. We’re proud to serve as a gathering place for the community to share our common interests and honor our differences with special seasonal events like the JCC Farmers Market, Under One Roof, and the Global Day of Jewish Learning. But what truly brings each of these special events to life is you.

By sharing your time and talents with us in classes and concerts, during events and outings, and in the Fitness Center, or J Café, you elevate the J from a place to a community. We’re excited to honor this eventful season, and we’re thrilled to welcome you each and every day.

We celebrate Jewish holidays and Shabbat with songs, stories, art, special foods, and traditions. See page 22.

We are dedicated to engaging the Greater Cincinnati community through the exploration of Jewish identity and culture in films, literature, music, dance, theater, visual arts, comedy, and through discussions with speakers and thought leaders. Jewish and Israeli Book Club: Three Floors Up, Author Visit and Book SigningOctober 30, 7pm

Celebrate Israel at 70 through literature. Come hear Eshkol Nevo, one of Israel’s most celebrated authors, discuss his most recent novel, Three Floors Up. This best-selling and acclaimed Israeli novel examines the interconnected lives of its characters, whose turmoils, secrets, unreliable confessions, and problematic decisions reveal a society in the midst of an identity crisis. Reading this novel in advance (Hebrew or English translation available) will enrich the experience, but is not required.

Eshkol Nevo grew up in Jerusalem, Haifa, and Detroit. He is the grandson of Levi Eshkol, the late third prime minister of Israel. He teaches creative writing and thinking at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Tel Aviv University, Sapir College and the Open University of Israel.

Comedian and Chicago native Joel Chasnoff is a former IDF combat soldier and wrote his comedic memoir, The 188th Crybaby Brigade, about his service in the Israeli Army. Returning to Cincinnati by popular demand, Joel has performed on stage and screen in nine countries, including two off-Broadway shows. Kultar’s MimeSeptember 28, 7pm At the Aronoff Center for the Arts

Inspired by two seminal poems, “Kultar’s Mime” by Sarbeet Singh and “In the City of Slaughter” by Hayim Nahman Bialik, this play brings to life the story of a Jewish artist collective who discover the horrors of the 1984 Sikh massacre in New Delhi while journeying to commemorate the 1903 Jewish pogroms in Russia. In a moment of solidarity, they choose to tell the story of the “other” - a story the world has largely ignored. Kultar Singh was a young boy, mute and deaf, who was traumatized by the murder of his father. Kultar’s Mime comes to Cincinnati after traveling to more than 75 cities across the world, evoking a powerful reaction from audiences and confirming the power of compassion to break the cycle of hatred. This event will unite the interfaith and secular communities of Cincinnati to reflect on the depths of the human experience.

Finding Your Fearlessness: Bullying PreventionOctober 29, 1:30pmJ Member: $5; public: $7

It’s common for parents to feel powerless and frustrated when their kids are being bullied, but often parents don’t know it’s happening. Grandparents can play a special role in bullying prevention too, as they often share a special bond that is unique from other relationships children have with adults. They can encourage children to share problems that they might be embarrassed or ashamed to tell a parent or a teacher about. Get concrete answers and learn helpful strategies from Rabbi Dave Burstein to identify and support children who could be in a bullying situation, while Mike Simmons addresses some easy Krav Maga self defense skills that will boost a child’s confidence and, if necessary, help them get out of a bad situation.

Laugh Without Worry: What You Need to Know About Pelvic Floor DisordersAugust 22, 5:30pm

As women age, their muscles get weaker, including those that support the bladder, bowel and uterus. That can lead to some uncomfortable moments, like leakage when you laugh or pain during intercourse. Weaker muscles occur most commonly as a result of childbirth and menopause, which is why nearly one in three women experience issues. The good news is that these issues don’t need to disrupt your lifestyle.

Join The Jewish Hospital — Mercy Health and Mayerson JCC as we talk about bladder control. This interactive discussion will explain the causes, symptoms, and most up-to-date surgical and nonsurgical treatments. The presentation and Q&A will be led by a board-certified urologist.

Everyone has a legacy. In a hundred years, you can still be changing lives.

Shaping lives for future generationsOur families, community, and Jewish experiences shaped who we are, and how we raise our children. We would not be who we are today without these influences.

Our legacy gift is to help ensure the community and Jewish experiences we had growing up, and have today, are available for generations to come. ─ Ilana Gildenblatt-Nadel and Neil Nadel

Consider a Gift to the JCC

The JCC is more than just a building. It’s the heartbeat of our community. Every year, our JCC touches more than 50,000 lives. People of all ages, abilities, and beliefs in every community throughout Greater Cincinnati depend on us for reasons big and small. They look to us to connect with others, to support their healthy lifestyle, and for many helpful services. Perhaps most of all, to experience the joy of a welcoming community rooted in Jewish values.

Membership revenue and program fees do not cover all our costs. Donations, grants, and funds cover approximately 38% of our operating budget and your generous donations allow us to continue to connect, enrich, and inspire our members.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us continue to present free and subsidized programs, and provide more than $650,000 in financial aid annually in an effort to make the JCC accessible to everyone.
