Jackie Hawley

Jackie Hawley is the founding ArtisticDirector of the Cantiamo Girls Choir ofOttawa and its Training Choir. She hasconducted and toured internationally withadult, youth and children's choirs and hasbeen a clinician for choirs and schoolsthroughout Ontario for more than twenty-fiveyears. Ms. Hawley is also the ArtisticDirector of the Ottawa Children's Choir andMusic Director of its Chamber Choir. Underher artistic leadership, the choir co-producedKaleid-on-the-Road in 2010, bringingacclaimed international artists Rajaton toOttawa for educational and performanceevents that involved more than 500 people ofall ages. Ms. Hawley has presented atnumerous events including Festival 500 andPodium, she was on the ACCC Podiumcommittee (Ottawa 2012) and she writes thechildren's choir column for the ACCC. Ms.Hawley works frequently with the EducationDepartment of the National Arts Centre andis the Music Director of the NAC's 500 voiceannual Music Monday Choir. Ms. Hawleywas also a teacher with the Ottawa CarletonDistrict School Board, and continues to givemusic leadership workshops to Board staff.Ms. Hawley graduated from the University ofToronto with an honours degree in MusicEducation and from the University of Ottawawith a Bachelor of Education.

Cantiamo Girls Choir

The Cantiamo Girls Choir of Ottawadevelops integrity , empathy andself-confidence in its choristers throughchoral excellence, leadership training andeducational and community outreach. Thechoir consists of up to 35 girls, aged 12 to 20and as of 2006 also has a Training Choir forgirls and boys aged 7 to12. Cantiamo is opento experiencing a wide variety of repertoirewith a strong focus on Canadian composers.Since its 2003 inception, Cantiamo haspremiered more than twenty Canadian choralcompositions! Cantiamo is also dedicated toeducational outreach and supporting singingin our schools through workshops forteachers and mentoring of school choirs.Aside from its own concerts, the CantiamoGirls Choir performs in various hospitals,churches and retirement homes and tosupport community events. Cantiamo hasparticipated in a number of festivals, the mostrecent being Festival 500 2013 inNewfoundland and was also a feature choir atthe Podium conference in Ottawa in 2012.

Capital BrassWorks

Since its opening concert in June 1999,Capital BrassWorks has been impressingaudiences everywhere with a huge range ofstunningly rendered programmes. The groupincludes some of Canada's best brass playersand percussionists, drawn primarily from theNational Arts Centre Orchestra. Guest artistsfrom the Toronto and Montreal Symphonieshave also taken part in CBW concerts andrecordings. The ensemble plays a wide varietyof repertoire, from Renaissance music tocontemporary music for brass. Several CBWmembers are accomplished arrangers, and thegroup has performed both original works andarrangements by some of Canada's finestcomposers. Capital BrassWorks presents aregular series of concerts every year and hashad several concerts broadcast by CBC andRadio Canada. It has also been the featuredensemble on main series concerts of theNational Arts Centre Orchestra and hasperformed two concerts at the Elora Festival.Capital BrassWorks continues to sponsoreducational initiatives, and frequently includesyoung musicians in its programmes. In 2008and 2010 CBW provided concerts and brassclinics for the Yamaha-sponsored Musicfest,held in Ottawa, and presented a jazz-inspiredshow with Canadian trombone legend IanMcDougall.

Michael Zaugg has distinguished himself asan innovative and versatile conductor on theCanadian choral scene. He is the founder andArtistic Director of the Montreal ChoralInstitute, an umbrella organization for theadvancement of choral education. As ArtisticDirector of the St Lawrence Choir ofMontreal, he leads an innovative andwell-respected concert series with theensemble. Since 2007, he has worked asInterim Chorus Master with the MontrealSymphony Orchestra, for which the St.Lawrence Choir is the core amateur chorus.With the Cantata Singers of Ottawa, MichaelZaugg has been performing as ArtisticDirector since 2005. In addition to conductingthe choir's regular concert series, he alsoprepares them for their appearances with theNational Arts Centre Orchestra. In 2006,Michael Zaugg founded Voces Boreales, a20-voice group specializing in contemporarya cappella music. This Montreal ensemble hasalready appeared in the NAC eXpressionsMusic Series and the Montreal InternationalBach Academy, and has been featured onCBC Radio 2. On the national choral scene,he has also worked with the HalifaxCamerata, the Vancouver Chamber Choir,Thirteen Strings, the Nova Scotia YouthChoir and Musica Intima. In February, 2012,Michael Zaugg was appointed ArtisticDirector and Principal Conductor of theprofessional choir Pro Coro Canada ofEdmonton.

Cantata Singers of Ottawa, founded in1964, are dedicated to excellence in theperformance of choral music fromCanada and around the world. Cantata Singers of Ottawa, founded in1964, are dedicated to excellence in theperformance of choral music fromCanada and around the world. Since theopening of the National Arts Centre(NAC) in 1969, Cantata Singers ofOttawa have performed every year withthe NAC Orchestra under the baton ofthe NACO's artistic directors, from MarioBernardi to Trevor Pinnock and PinchasZukerman, as well as internationallyrenowned guest conductors. The choiralso produces its own concert seriesevery year and makes numerous guestappearances with other organizations.CSO has recorded programmes for CBCRadio, CBC Television and RadioCanada, and it has won top honours inthe CBC Radio competition for amateurchoirs.In 1998, CSO and the NACOrchestra under Mario Bernardi recordedShattered Night, Shivering Stars, a CD ofmusic of Canadian composer AlexinaLouie. In addition to its Canadian tours,the choir has performed in theNetherlands, Hong Kong, Taiwan,Austria, Hungary and Italy.
