DETAILED CONFERENCE PROGRAM

1.1 Teaching Stage 2 Physical Education (SY) Shane Hill, Wilderness SchoolThis session will cover a range of discussion and teaching topics to enable you to gain valuable insights through peer discussion and reviewing tasks for the new Stage 2 PE course. Examples will be provided drawing on current programs being taught in schools. Participants are asked to bring their learning and assessment plan and a task for this part of the session.

1.2 Target Games in Primary School: Aiming at Year 3/4 (PY, SC)Nathaniel Eldridge, The Pines SchoolIn this session, you will participate in a variety of games that focus on developing and refining  Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and decision making during Target Games. Target Games have tactical similarities not only from one target game to another but also across the other three game categories. Target Games have become an important part of our school’s PE program as they focus on developing and refining manipulative FMS. They also provide a perfect context for developing students decision-making skills needed for game play as decision making is made before performing the skill providing more time to make decisions before executing the skill.

1.3 Thematic Invasion Games Unit: Netball Focus - Principles of Play in a Unit of Work (PY, MY)Katie Liebelt, Clare High SchoolThis session focusses on an Invasion Games Unit where students have completed 9 lessons of this thematic unit focused on Invasion Games Movement Concepts and Strategies. We then choose to use Netball as a vehicle to teach Principles of Play. We take the game of Netball further, as a popular community sport, providing a pathway for students and assisting with developing a culture of physical activity. We have a strong focus on conceptual transfer, introducing this at Year 7 and 8, to ensure success in Year 9 and 10.

1.4 Incorporating HPE, General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum Priorities in an Interdisciplinary Approach (EY, PY, MY, SY, W)Stuart Burns, ACARAThis workshop will focus on unpacking the HPE curriculum content and Achievement Standards, developing understanding around the embedded opportunities for capability development and how the focus upon cross curriculum priorities can open links across learning areas. Participants will be engaged in exploring how the Australian Curriculum HPE learning area uses a strengths based and critical inquiry approach to develop ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit learning opportunities about health and movement.

Keynote 1 - Janice Atkin, ACHPER NSWDeveloping Future Ready Learners

If you do a google search of future ready learning or skills you will come across numerous lists of skills that need to be taught in schools. You’ll find the 4Cs, the 7Cs another 7Cs. Which are the Cs we should focus on? Or should we even focus on the Cs in HPE? This keynote will explore what ‘future ready’ means, why it’s important and what it could look like in HPE.

Keynote 2 - James Podsiadly, AFL MaxBeing an Effective Leader: Supporting and Engaging Others

This keynote session will offer an insight into the career of James, who will outline the importance of resilience and what this means to him as he reflects on his time as a player and coach, as well as his career in his search for continuous improvement as a leader. Everyone in their career needs the support of others to assist them personally in their journey, and James will outline his experiences, and share some valuable learnings on looking after others, as well as yourself. This session will unpack how you can live and breathe your values to inspire those around you, as well as offering examples on how to focus on the longer game to ensure you create future active generations.

Lunch and Networking: 1.30pm - 2.00pm

Session 2: 12.00noon - 1.30pm

2.1 Developing Independent Self-Regulated Learners in PE: Gathering Data for Performance Improvement (MY, SY, SC)Shane Pill, Flinders UniversityPerformance improvement analysis at Stage 1 and 2 PE has seen teachers looking more closely at how to teach students to use data in Year 9-10 PE (and earlier) so students are informed about their learning and empowered to take action. Notational analysis is ‘gold standard’ in PE, sport and movement analysis. In this workshop, participants will use a range of game performance notational instruments for individual and team game performance analysis, and individual movement performance analysis. Volleyball will be used as the practical context.

2.2 Game Based FMS Using TPSR (EY, PY)Scott Hughes, Catherine McAuley SchoolGame based approaches to the teaching and learning of FMS are a world first that was developed by Assoc Prof Shane Pill in his ACHPER (SA) book, “Play with Purpose: For Fundamental Movement Skills Teaching”. In this practical session Scott will be demonstrating how to blend both ‘Game Sense’ and Hellison’s ‘Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility’ (TPSR) models of practice so that you can address three areas of content; the tactical, technical (FMS) and personal, social and emotional development of children and students. This is a great session for those wanting to explore new models of practice and their application in the primary school.

2.3 Improving Practice (EY, PY, MY)Kipp Jones, Department for EducationGrab a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit and let’s share our best strategies, resources and tips in a collaborative environment. Topics for exploration: assessment, contemporary best practice pedagogy, tips and tricks, handy resources and apps. Come network with fellow colleagues, bring your ideas and share your wisdom to help support one another along our joint educative journey. This session requires participation from delegates to contribute to discussions. All this and more!

2.4 Exploring Threshold Concepts in F-10 HPE (EY, PY, MY, SY, W)Rick Baldock, ACHPER SAThreshold Concepts have been described as the ideas and mindsets crucial to students gaining a genuine understanding of our subject. When students cross these thresholds, new and previously inaccessible ways of thinking about something are revealed. A session for those of you wanting to extend and engage your students.

2.5 Basketball Practical for Secondary Students (MY, SY, SC)Brendan Mann, Springbank Secondary CollegeDuring this practical, movement preparation will be included to assist students to obtain an accumulative effect on performance. The premium skills of shooting the basketball and finishing around the basket will be taught and then applied using a game sense approach. A range of dynamic activities will be presented with teaching cues to support teachers and students to further develop their knowledge and application tactically and strategically.

Session 2: 12.00noon - 1.30pm

3.1 Designing Engaging Assessment Tasks for Senior Secondary School Students Using Practical Activities (SY)Glen Urbani, Rostrevor CollegeThis session will be relevant for Stage 1 and 2 PE and explore ways to use practical activity to support students with the knowledge to undertake assessment tasks. The session will look into how the practical element of the subject can be used to design assessment tasks incorporating the 21st century learning skills; creativity and innovation, research and information fluency, problem solving and critical thinking, collaboration and communication. It will also include thinking related to the assessment task design criteria from the specific subject outlines. Participants should be prepared for an interactive session using Badminton as a foundation in relation to the principles outlined above

3.2 Blending Models of Practice: TPSR and Game Sense through Tennis (EY, PY, MY, SC)Rick Baldock, ACHPER SAWhen examining various models of practice in Physical Education, teachers are often left with the impression that they need to adhere to a model so that its fidelity is maintained. For the practitioner, however, they are often seeking a more pragmatic approach that will engage learners and enhance student achievement. This session will provide a brief overview of these models and then provide time for attendees to experience how these models can be best blended to enhance student learning. This session will be especially useful for those wanting to renew their approaches to teaching PE and the way in which they structure units of work and lessons.

3.3 21st Century Learning in the Health Classroom (MY, SY, W)Graeme Hudson, Marden Senior CollegeUsing interactive online applications to help your students collaborate and have fun whilst learning, this session will present a range of applications to engage your students in the health classroom. Pleasebring along your phone/laptop/tablet to take part in the interactive presentation.

3.4 Mindful Movement with MissFIT Movement (EY, PY, MY, SY, W)Sara Pettet, MissFIT MovementWant to finish your day feeling relaxed and ready for the weekend? Join the MissFIT Movement team as they take you through one of their Mindful Movement sessions - usually run for your students, but as demonstrated in this session, can be adapted to suit students (and teachers) of all ages and abilities. This session will combine yoga-inspired movements with mindfulness, to develop your body’s strength, flexibility and balance; as well as enhance your ability to relax and be mindful. Enjoy the physical and mental benefits of this program. This session also includes a short meditation and a chance for peer discussion.
