About the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP)

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC) has formulated a novel Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) for imparting skills in class XII pass students and dropouts. This programme has been launched on a pilot basis through different ENVIS centres located in different parts of the country. Our ENVIS Resource Partner on Environmental Biotechnology, University of Kalyani) has taken initiative to conduct a certificate training course on Pollution Monitoring (Water) under green skill programme (GSDP). Skill Development, led skill training activity leading to employment or any outcome oriented activity that enables a participant to acquire a skill, duly assessed and certified by an independent third-party agency, which enables him/ her to get wage/ self-employment leading to increased earnings, and/ or improved working conditions. The programme was conceptualized and the training modules prepared as per NSQF guidelines. Hon’ble Minister, MoEF&CC launched the programme and released the Basic Course and advanced Course training modules on June 4, 2017, on the eve of World Environment Day.

The skilling programmes cover diverse fields such as pollution monitoring (air/water/soil), Sewage Treatment Plant, Effluent Treatment Plants and Common Effluent Treating Plants (STP/ETP/CETP) operation, waste management, forest management, water budgeting, auditing, conservation of river

dolphins, wildlife management, para taxonomy, including Peoples’ Biodiversity Register (PBRs), mangroves conservation, bamboo management and livelihood generation. The duration of the courses ranges from 80 hours to 560 hours approx. All courses are based on National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) compliant.

GSDP Courses on water pollution: Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater from different sources. This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into the water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution affects the entire biosphere – plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and population but also the entire ecosystem. Water quality refers to the chemical, physical, biological, and radiological characteristics of water. It is a measure of the condition of water relative to the requirements of one or more biotic species and or to any human need or purpose.

The specific contaminants leading to pollution in water include a wide spectrum of chemicals, pathogens. Disease-causing microorganisms are referred to as pathogens. Coliform bacteria, which are not an actual cause of disease, are commonly used as a bacterial indicator of water pollution. Other microorganisms sometimes found in surface waters that have caused human health problems.

Training Methodology: Both theory and practical sessions (with field visit and hands on training) will be facilitated by core academic staff. Well qualified experts will deliver lectures and facilitate practical experience through demonstration and hands on training.

Objective of water pollution To develop trained manpower. This certificate courses can provide gainful

employment opportunities and income to the trained person also develop skill among the young peoples.

Generate self-employment, in different lab rotaries, Research institute/Organisations and own lab rotary farms.
