The University of Portsmouth

The University is ranked in the top 2 per cent of universities in the world in the Times Higher Education World Rankings, in the top 50 universities in the 2016 Guardian University Guide, as a top ten modern university in 2015 The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and in The Times Higher Education top 100 under 50.

With a mission to delight in creating, sharing and applying knowledge to make a difference to individuals and society, the University is committed to the delivery of transformational education, research and innovation by:

• recognising and sustaining strengths in undergraduate education and growing provision in the areas of postgraduate, part-time, CPD and flexible modes of study

• building on financial strength and increasing the contribution to income that comes from research and commercial activities

• ensuring every student takes part in career enhancing activities, such as placements, exchanges, enterprise, volunteering or work-based learning

• establishing nationally and internationally recognised cross-discipline thematic areas that address key issues facing society

• creating a network of strategic global partnerships to support internationalisation

• raising expectations and creating ladders of opportunity for people in our region to take part in higher education

• supporting and developing our people to deliver excellence with commitment and passion

• developing a flexible physical and digital environment that promotes enjoyment and engagement within a community of learning and discovery

• being a proud part of Portsmouth and our region, working in partnership to support and influence the economic, educational, social and cultural life of the city

Portsmouth continues to be a university of choice for a wide range of students, both UK and international. Of the nearly 22,000 students, around 3,000 are international. The National

Student Survey 2015 ranked Portsmouth at 89 per cent for student satisfaction, the ninth successive year Portsmouth has out-performed the sector average. Academic staff are expected to have appropriate qualifications in educational practice as well as academic and professional qualifications in their subject area. The University continues to invest heavily in its teaching facilities and seeks to ensure every student takes part in career enhancing activities. Purple Door Careers and Recruitment offers in-house recruitment agency services working with both students and employers.

Research at Portsmouth is flourishing as demonstrated by the strength and variety of research collaborations in which the University is engaged. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 64 per cent of research submitted by the University was rated as world-leading and internationally excellent. A key part of the University’s strategy is the delivery of knowledge-based services to business and other organisations in the region and nationally. New senior appointments have been made to help develop this activity further and faculties are working to extend their range of contacts and, in doing so, to diversify their income streams.

The University has been very successful in recruiting both home and international students, meeting or exceeding its targets year-on-year. With a turnover of just under £200 million in the last financial year, the annual economic benefits to the local community are valued at over £250 million. The University is financially very sound, having generated surpluses for many years and borrowing is minimal. All of the major capital developments since 1997 have been financed from retained surpluses, capital grants and the disposal of unwanted assets.

With over 2,500 staff, the University is a major employer in the city and in the last staff survey, some 91 per cent of those responding said the University is a good place to work. Our results placed us joint first as an employer of choice out of 26 higher education institutions surveyed and in the top ten employers of choice amongst 232 public sector organisations.

The University and the city

Located on the south coast of England, Portsmouth is a historic waterfront city with a real community feel, about 90 minutes by train from London and with regular ferries to the Continent. The seafront is a short walk from both the main University campus and city centre. Its beaches, public gardens and Southsea Common host a range of activities including charity running events, live music and various festivals.

As well as working at the city centre campus, many staff also live in the heart of the city and many students remain in Portsmouth after they graduate and work in the area. Many students live in Southsea which has a vibrant social life and student-focused retail and eating establishments. In recent years the city has undergone substantial regeneration, including the development of the major retail and entertainment complex at Gunwharf Quays, which is dominated by the 170-metre Emirates Spinnaker Tower.

Portsmouth is home to the Royal Navy and is proud of its maritime heritage, displayed at the Historic Dockyard which houses three historic ships including Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, and the award winning Mary Rose Museum.

The University also has a strong relationship with the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Portsmouth has gained additional investment with the construction of a base for Ben Ainslie Racing and the city hosting Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series events in July 2015 and 2016.

The University is well embedded in the cultural life of the city. It has a strong partnership with the New Theatre Royal, with a building extension now housing a TV studio, theatre and music rooms in which students can learn and perform. The city’s literary figures also form an important part of the city’s vibrant history. Charles Dickens was born here in 1812 and Conan Doyle, Brunel and Kipling also feature inPortsmouth’s history.

Portsmouth has a lively sporting scene, reflected in the many sports societies run by the Students’ Union – from football to fencing, softball to sailing. Windsurfing and sailing are very popular pursuits locally and there are plenty of facilities for a variety of sporting activities, from Southsea Common to the Mountbatten Centre and the indoor Tennis Centre.

Research

Portsmouth Business School played an important role in the University’s 2014 REF entry. The 47 strong (41.4 FTE) submission to Business and Management Studies was the largest made by the University of Portsmouth to REF2014. Annual research income for staff associated with the submission grew by 55 per cent compared to the previous assessment period, while the number of doctoral students (drawn from 33 countries) almost doubled – to 119 in the 2013/14 academic year. Over 27 per cent of our Business and Management submission comprised early career researchers (compared with 9 per cent in RAE2008) and we were therefore delighted to see Portsmouth ranked as the strongest performing post-92 university – and in the top third of all submitting institutions in the Business and Management field in terms of research power. In addition, members of our School of Law played a significant role in supporting submissions to the Social Work and Social Policy, and Area Studies Units of Assessment.

We are particularly proud of the impact of our research which reflected the breadth and depth of research undertaken within the business arena – these included work which has:

• revolutionised how flight data from aircraft flight recorders is analysed

• led to efficiency savings in naval manpower planning

• altered the way one of the big four accountancy firms carried out its audit processes

• helped to improve the work-related quality of life of employees in a number of major UK companies

• prompted legislative change and new stocking strategies as conduit to enhance growth and tackle poverty in the fisheries of Central Asia

The REF panel acknowledged our strength in this area, rating 58 per cent of our impact submission as outstanding (4*) and 42 per cent as having an extremely significant impact (3*) in economic, social and policy-making terms beyond academia. This placed us in the top 10 per cent for impact across the 101 submissions made to this Unit of Assessment, and saw us rated as having the fifth best impact submission (behind Oxford, LSE, Strathclyde and Reading) among the 39 largest Business and Management submissions (35+ staff). The panel were also impressed by the research environment we are nurturing at the School, viewing it as overwhelmingly internationally excellent in terms of strategy, staff and PGR support provision, and the development of national and international collaborations.
