COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a short-term, non-credit course that is part of the Professional Program at Southern States

University. Using reading and case study materials from a reputable business law textbook, this

course presents an overview of the ethical issues and laws that affect business sustainability.

Students will also learn the relationship between ethics and laws, and how they have an overall

impact on the stakeholders in an organization. The course will analyze various sources, statutes,

and regulatory issues that affect U.S. business operations. At the end of the course, students will

analyze and present their analysis of an existing business law case.

Prerequisite: None, Co-requisite: None

Credit: Non-degree, Non-credit

Advised English Proficiency: Intermediate or Higher Level.

1. Standard classroom with podium, overhead projector, DVD, monitor, and other

classroom equipment, including access to Internet and PC with demonstration software.

COURSE OBJECTIVES (STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES or SLOs)

After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify the problems in business law and provide solutions by using quantitative

reasoning, including the principles of accounting and finance, and analyze business

problems, with special attention to the ways in which management and marketing

decisions affect financial performance.

2. Articulate, develop and defend positions critically and engage in problem solving.

3. Formulate an effective legal analysis by synthesizing information, identifying legal

issues, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant facts, using facts and law to support

argument, reasoning by analogy and reaching conclusions based on analysis.

4. Identify and critically analyze ethical issues and apply them to case studies.

5. Analyze and define laws, such as property, bailments, sales and commercial paper, with

particular emphasis on the Uniform Commercial Code, and determine what is within the

law and what is not.

6. Critically analyze the changing area of public policy, social issues and the area of

business ethics as they apply to contracts and sales.

7. Identify and describe the basic parts of a valid contract and the limitations of contracts,

and recognize a breach of contract, and implement possible remedies for a breach of

contract.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Attendance

As regular attendance and successful student learning are closely linked, University policies

concerning student attendance are necessary for ensuring students are meeting their learning

goals.

It is the policy of the University that students are required to be regular and punctual in class

attendance. In order to receive a “Certificate of Completion”, a student needs to have a

minimum of 60 hours of attendance (83% attendance) and complete the course. Full attendance

requires full participation in class.

Student Responsibilities

Students are required to bring the required textbook to each class and participate in all class

activities as requested by the instructor. Students enrolled at Southern States University assume

the obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University's function as an

educational institution, suitable to a member of an academic community. The University,

therefore, expects its students to conduct themselves as responsible individuals, considerate and

respectful of the rights and interest of others.
