Welcome to Spring, what a start we have had, with the State Conference held in Toowoomba in August, the flower capital. I came away with a spring in my walk, feeling motivated by the speakers and topics presented, to take back to work. I will say no more on the conference as Elinor Radke will be writing a conference report for the news letter. Exciting times ahead with AS/NZ4187 soon to be published. Change is always a challenge. There will be change to our practice to implement and comply with the New Standards and one way we can all achieve it, is to share our knowledge. So when or if you have already implement a new process to comply, why don’t you share it. You could write something for the newsletter or present it at a workshop or conference. We are all learning together. Professional Organization FSRACA. The Committee meet face to face once a year, which was in February in Brisbane this year. ‘CLASSIC CONFERNECE’ CONTINUALLY LEARNING ALL STERILISING STANDARDS AND INFECTION CONTRL

PICNIC POINT - TOOWOOMBA

156 delegates attended the annual SRACA State Conference this year in Toowoomba in late August. Delegates from far and wide participated. From PNG, Thursday Island and Cairns in the north, going south to NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. There was a good representation from the Dental field. We were also delighted that interstate colleagues from respective SRACA’s Inc. Committees from NSW and Victoria attended. 30 Trade Partners also supported the conference.

One of the Key Learning Outcomes:

‘To provide stimulating, motivational and diverse speakers that relate to the above disciplines. This will enhance delegate knowledge to explore and investigate to develop strategies for their working environments’

THURSDAY afternoon commenced with the Validation Interactive Workshop on ‘validation’ for washer disinfectors, packaging and sterilising and quality tools. Following, Classic Conference cocktails were served in the Trade Area. There was an outstanding response from registered delegates attending to receive the ‘2015 -2016 membership’ FREE!

FRIDAY sessions covered a variety of topics to broadly mention: Shelf life, National Standards, Keeping Bugs out! CJD, Audits, Loan transport cases and Manual cleaning and biofilms.

To follow for the conference dinner and entertainment, ‘FAULTY TOWERS DINING EXPERIENCE’ came to town! This truly was such a fun evening with most delegates dressing as their favourite Movie / TV actor or actress. It was a pleasure to observe how delegates really enjoyed themselves and to catch up with friends. Basil, Sybil and Manuel entertained to their true style. Dinner was booked out!

Everyone came back the next morning for the SATURDAY sessions, another day of various topics. These included, for example, dental care, sterilising changes for the last 10 years, new and refurbished facilities, draft AS/NZS 4187, assessing personality types, water quality and orthopaedic instrumentation. Included within the conference programme, benefits for being a SRACA Qld Inc. member:

AWARDS & RECOGNITION • Membership Prize: Celia Fletcher • Sr Mary Andre Short Papers: Yvonne Albertyn, Mackay. • Poster Competition: Pauline Dennis, Logan. • Early Bird Registration: Jacqueline Cartwright, Chermside.

Many thanks to delegates for the feedback and suggestions for future Workshops and Conferences. Congratulations to Narelle Parfitt, Petra Houston, Andrew Bailey and

the SRACA Committee for an outstanding conference for the location, the food, and the quality of the presentations from local, interstate and overseas presenters. A very big ‘thankyou’ to our Trade Partners who come and support the industry every year to make such a successful conference for the field of sterilising technology.

Regards, Elinor V. Radke, President-Elect.

What attracted you most to this conference: Always informative, educational and fun. See and look at new equipment and people from other CSSD units. Keeping updated with processes and products Told to attend. The Program / speakers and topics Furthering knowledge/ always very well organized. Am new to the area and want to increase my knowledge Knowledge of new standards and their implications. Excellent Program, opportunity to liaise with other like staff. Gaining more education / learning / networking. The presentations by certain speakers that suites my work place in Port

Moresby. Professional development and networking.

Comments and general suggestions: More handouts from talks. Organization to be highly commended

What is the benefits of RO if water softeners are functional and maintained.

To many people in small area - too crampy - venue with hotel facilities please, - raffle off flowers at end.

Topics - Across disciplines, AS/NZ4187,Management and Leadership/ Novice and Experienced Speakers / Research.

Excellent conference, great selection of topics, and speakers, would suggest that a bell be rung in trade area to let people know that the next session is about to begin.

Excellent program , very informative. Thank you to drivers on Friday Night - great idea.

Sound was problem, not very loud/ need to remind people in the room to have respect for the speakers by not talking and not playing on phones. Very distracting.

Well done girls - great conference a credit to you all. More surgeons as speakers / Dr's talks are always interesting. More time to visit the trade. Speakers talked for too long : fell behind in time.

LATEST NEWS!!!

BENEFITS for educational activities endorsed by the ACN:

• SRACA Qld Inc. to use the ACN Endorsed Course Logo, • ACN acknowledges the quality of our Conference, • And demonstrates our commitment to the continuing professional development [CPD] of nurses.

To this end: The SRACA Qld Inc. State ‘CLASSIC’ Conference is endorsed:

‘This Conference is endorsed by ACN according to our Continuing Professional Development Endorsed Course Standards. It has been allocated the following CPD hours according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia – Continuing Professional Development Standard’

28 August: 2 CPD hours

29 August: 5 CPD hours

30 August: 5 CPD hours

Elinor V. Radke

President-Elect, SRACA Qld Inc.

Comments and general suggestions: It was annoying that the "Toowoomba Table" talked and giggled and kept their phones on for both days, It was very distracting to have to sit next to them, not to mention rude to the speakers.

It was a long, boring wait for start of dinner. Might have been better to have mingling through the trade exhibits and drink availabilities instead of standing for 1 and 1/2 hours. The minibuses were a great idea.

Locations for future conferences - Tweed / Coolangatta border for Gold Coast.

Thanks for all your hard work, committee / condense into 2 days.

Thank you for a great conference. Managing an epidemic/outbreak in hospital and community. Water testing and standards are a bit heavy going, better in the morning.

We need to keep to time. / How to remind delegates to return to Conference Room.

The two CSSD presentations should have not run one after the other.

New Technology/ The Importance of Decision Makers.

Legal Discussions - where CSSD stands. Always very well organised. Time listed for topics

BBaarrrryy GGeeoorrggee CCooxx First of all I want to say what a privilege it is to speak at the celebration of the life of Barry Cox. I have worked with Barry for close on 30 years. During this time Barry and I got to know each other quite well. Barry is from an era when things like honesty, loyalty, respect and courtesy are values that were mandatory requirements back then. It is these values that have keep him in good stead, and he has carried these values through all of his life. He has a toughness and resourcefulness that is rare these days. In his role as a service technician at Getinge he not only had the respect of his peers and work colleagues but also the respect of his many customers. In his job, Barry travelled throughout Queensland, Northern NSW, PNG and the Southern Pacific, leaving a trail of satisfied and happy customers behind him. We at Getinge, had many service requests from customers saying. “Can you please send Barry?” If there was a difficult service problem, Coxey was the go-to man. He was the, "Mr Fix-it". While Barry is from a previous era, compared to some of this younger colleagues, he always stayed on top of his game. Making sure he is up to speed with his knowledge and keeping pace with modern technologies. He is the complete professional in his chosen craft.

But it isn’t all about work for Barry. We would engage in many long conversations about family – how are my kids going – what was happening with his grandkids, great grandkids etc. We would talk about his love of travel, my love of Rugby and Golf, and of course, his beloved Bowls. If you got him talking about Bowls, it was a conversation that was very difficult to try and terminate. There is no doubt that Barry has a positive effect on all people that he has contact with. He is an engaging and lovable character. I learnt a lot from Barry. Not only about what to do at work, but more importantly, about how you should behave and think as good citizen and human being. The many people that know, or who have had some sort of contact with Barry Cox, they are better people because of it. There is no doubt, the world is a better place for Him being in it. God bless you Barry. Peter Francis August 2014
