Tough requirements for insulation in heavy industrial environments
>> CORROSION UNDER INSULATIONOne of the greatest challenges of insulation in marine, offshore and heavy industrial environments is presented by the issue of corrosion under insulation (C.U.I). The traditional approach within these extreme environments has been to specify open cell fi brous materials clad with a metal covering.
Under these especially harsh conditions, system fail-ure is regularly encountered. Over time cladding systems rust and fall apart exposing the porous insulation material within. With the water vapour barrier breached the open cell insulation material becomes sodden, dra-matically increasing the risk of corrosion. As moisture migrates through the insulation it causes damage to the pipe through corrosion.
Although salt water proves particularly aggressive any form of moisture within an open cell insulation will attack pipes. The cost of replacing corroded pipes can run into the millions and often require processes to be taken off-line for signifi cant periods of time.
>> REGULAR INSPECTIONInsulation installed on heavy industrial applications should be inspected and evaluated on a regular basis. When the insulation in situ is of the open cell type these inspection regimes often result in the replacement of all insulation at signifi cant cost purely to slow the rate of pipe corrosion.
>> EXPOSURE TO AGGRESSIVE AGENTSIn industrial applications pipework insulation and clad-dings are often exposed to UV, grease, oil and chemical attack.
>> EXPERT INSTALLATIONSpecialised insulation contractors are required to install any insulation on heavy industrial projects.
>> INSULATION OF EQUIPMENTAll valves, fl anges and other unusual shapes must be in-sulated. This proves particularly diffi cult when using tra-ditional materials.
>> CLADDING OF INSULATIONIt is standard practice when insulating in a heavy industrial environment to fully clad the insulation. Traditionally ap-plied cladding systems often create in of themselves con-siderable risk on site (the requirement to weld metal can, for instance, generate potentially dangerous sparks).
>> NOISE REDUCTIONProduction processes - particularly in the offshore envi-ronment - create a serious noise hazard.

For over 50 years Armafl ex has been the leading brand of elastomeric insulation. Repeatedly revolutionising the insulation industry, Armafl ex differs from other traditional insulation types by virtue of its in built water vapour bar-rier. This has implications when it comes to the covering and cladding requirements for Armafl ex.
Whereas traditional insulation types must incorporate a water vapour barrier into their covering systems this is not a requirement for Armafl ex with its built in water vapour barrier. Whilst some of the Arma-Chek systems do indeed offer an exceptional water vapour barrier this was not the foremost priority in their development.
Arma-Chek systems are designed to be particularly resil-ient against damage caused by mechanical impact, ad-verse weather and chemical attack.
Arma-Chek systems are specifi cally designed to help re-duce the risk of C.U.I in:
>> Offshore applications
>> Marine and ship building
>> Petrochemical industries
>> Energy plants & storage facilities
>> Cryogenic Applications (LNG)
In all industries the client demand is for a tough exterior surface to protect the insulation against mechanical im-pact and Arma-Chek systems are the ideal choice:
Signifi cantly minimising the risk of corrosion under insulation.
Increasing the insulation life expectancy by up to 40% compared with traditional materials.
Reducing the frequency and cost of monitoring and maintenance periods.
Representing a highly reliable and cost effective covering system.
Simplifying application with no need for specialised installation equipment.
Reducing safety risks during the application process.
Offering enhanced noise level reductions (particularly when used in combination with ArmaSound)
Providing exceptionally high resistance against UV, oil, chemical and extreme weather.
Meeting international standards.
Protect Your Investment with professional insulation and covering systems

Covering Systems
Universally applicable, yet designed specifi cally to work in harmony with Armafl ex materials, Arma-Chek coverings are fl exible and non-metallic. Easy to install on site, they are suitable as an alternative to metallic surfaces.
As non-metallic systems with no risk of surface corrosion, Arma-Chek systems experience an enhanced life expect-ancy and require signifi cantly less monitoring and mainte-nance compared to metallic systems.
Arma-Chek RThe high performance non metallic covering sys-tem, designed for offshore and heavy industry, which provides extra security to your investment.
When integrated with an Armafl ex substrate, an Arma-Chek R system offers an exceptional resistance against salt water, mechanical impact and UV damage.
Often specifi ed as an alternative to metallic claddings, the non-metallic nature of Arma-Chek R eliminates the risk of galvanic corrosion.
Arma-Chek TThe easy to apply, reliable solution for irregular shapes and hard to access areas.
Arma-Chek T is a non-metallic, fl exible insulation and covering system developed for the hash environments of the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. Arma-Chek T is widely used for onshore and offshore applications. It offers the most reliable and time effective solution for irregular shapes and hard to access areas.
The Armafl ex substrate is covered with a durable terpoly-mer paint with an embedded layer of mat glass fi bre.
Arma-Chek DThe lightweight and easy to apply insulation system resistant to mechanical impact.
Designed for a diverse range of onshore and maritime applications, this black woven glass fi bre covering for Armafl ex substrate offers good resistance to UV, mechani-cal impact and under insulation corrosion when integrated into an Armafl ex system. Arma-Chek D remains fl exible in a moving environment and will not stain or mark.

Acoustic Systems in Industrial environmentsWhen working in industrial environments noise is a major hazard to employees.
Increasingly government legislation requires organisa-tions to take measures to lower noise levels in working environments. This legislation covers most industrial en-vironments.
Recent years have seen the creation and implementation of industry wide standards such as ISO 15665 – “Acous-tic Insulation for pipes, valves and fl anges”. Adhering to the recommendations given in these standards is the best way of demonstrating an attempt to reduce noise levels in an industrial environment.
Industrial SystemsThe acoustic insulation systems that minimise the risk of under insulation condensation.
ArmaSound Industrial Systems represent a sandwich construction comprising different layers of Armafl ex, ArmaSound 240 and Arma-Chek R, each with a specifi c thermal or acoustic objective. Each system is designed to satisfy a particular ISO 15665 classifi cation in order to give a signifi cant noise reduction whilst simultaneously minimising heat losses, preventing moisture ingress and avoiding under insulation corrosion.
All pictures in this brochure are from projects where Armafl ex and Arma-Chek have been installed. For more information please visit www.armacell.com/mo -references.
Protects Your InvestmentWith its exceptional, inbuilt, water vapour barrier Armafl ex is particularly effective at preventing moisture ingress and ensuring long term thermal effi ciency. The thermal properties of Armafl ex will not rapidly deteriorate over time as other insulation materials may and, by keeping moisture as far from the pipe surface as possible, Armafl ex reduces the risk of expensive under insulation corrosion.
The in built water vapour of Armafl ex comes from its closed cell structure. Armafl ex comprises thousands of interconnected closed cells, each with an inherent re-sistance to water ingress. As such the vapour barrier of Armafl ex cannot be compromised by surface punctures or tears.
In addition Armafl ex is dust and fi bre free. It will not emit any particles or fi bres, even when cut into shapes and fi ttings.
Armafl ex can be easily and cost effectively fabricated into valve and fl ange boxes on site, allowing for the protection of these vulnerable components and the creation of a fully sealed system at signifi cantly reduced cost.
Where industries have specifi c requirements Armafl ex is often available in specialized variants which meet the need. This includes a high temperature Armafl ex suitable for use on heating and process lines in excess of 105 degrees. All Armafl ex variants are manufactured to the highest levels of quality making Armafl ex a product that can truly protect your investment.

The Armaflex Assurance System - your peace-of-mind assurance that Armaflex is made to the strictest quality, technical performance and environmentally friendly standards.
Prevents Moisture PermeationMulti-layered closed wall cells provide a built-in vapour barrier which can’t be compromised by surface punc-tures or rips - this ensures the vapour barrier stays working for the lifetime of the insulation system.
Provides Long-Term Thermal PerformanceNon-wicking - No transmission of water vapour is pos-sible through the insulation due to the closed cell natureof Armaflex. Moisture will not migrate through profes-sionally installed Armaflex.
Long-Term DurabilityNo fragile water vapour barrier - The built-in vapour bar-rier can’t be “damaged” during installation or over thelifetime of the insulation.
Avoids Thermal BridgingArmaflex is a seamless insulation system - these sametechnical properties provide a secure system.
Long-Term Energy EfficiencyBy minimising the ingress of water vapour into theinsulation the multi-layered cells in Armaflex prevent thethermal conductivity from rising. Increased thermal con-ductivity can in the long term lead to increased energycosts and surface condensation.
Inhibits Growth of Mould• Minimises moisture permeation, the first require- ment for mould growth
• Minimises the second requirement: No cellulosic vapour jacket, and the smooth surface doesn’t trap
dust
Formaldehyde-FreeEnsures that Armaflex is a low-emitting product. It isalso low VOC.
Support Requirements of Health & IAQ (Indoor-Air-Quality)• Dust and Fibre-Free• Will not emit any particles or fibres - even when cut
into shapes and fittings• No outgassing - CFC & HCFC free manufacturing

Class O Armafl ex is the fl exible, closed cell, elastomeric, nitrile rubber insulation that offers reliable protection against condensation and ef-fectively prevents energy loss.A highly effi cient method of insulating hot and cold water services, chilled water lines, heating systems, air conditioning duct work and refrigerated pipe work for frost protection, energy conservation and condensation control. Armafl ex is dust free, fi bre free and CFC free with an ODP of zero which means an environmentally friendly product.» Built in vapour barrier prevents condensation» Long-term thermal performance / energy conservation» Lightweight and fl exible, quick and easy installation with low maintenance requirements, resulting in time and cost savings» Excellent resistance to the effects of ozone, oil and chemicals (consult product test list)
ARMAFLEX Tape Self-Adhesive
Armaflex 520 adhesive is based on modified chloroprene rubber in a blend of flammable solvents. The material has low viscosity for ease of application and quick drying characteristics. In the dry state, Armaflex 520 Adhesive is not flammable. The adhesive is particularly suitable for joining Armaflex flexible elastomeric insulation and for bonding the material to clean prepared surfaces. When properly cured the adhesive maintains the resistance to water vapour expected of Armaflex.
Self-Adhesive tape (available in Class O Armaflex, NH/Armaflex or HT/Armaflex) which may be used for insulating difficult shapes or areas not easily accessible
Armafinish CO is a water-based coating using an advanced terpolymer resin system. When properly applied the coat-ing is suitable for the protection of Armaflex flexible thermal insulation materials against sunlight, UV radiation and chemical attack. The coating, when fully cured, maintains the flexibility, resistance to water vapour and fire performance of the Armaflex material. Where resistance to damage is a particular requirement the coating may be further strength-ened using a random mesh glass fibre scrim.
Glue pump enhanced to use with Armaflex adhesives. Metal can and brush in one with dose pump. Gluing is made faster and more efficient than manual application, requiring no manual “dunking” of an application brush. By adequately spreading the glue onto the surface Gluemaster provides savings by reducing waste to an absolute minimum.
Armafix Insulation Pipe Hangers (IPH) is quick, innovative alternative to traditional block and dowel pipe supports. The engineered, foam-to-foam solutions provide optimum load bearing while protecting against thinkness compression and condensation gaps that can compromise system integrity

What is ISO 15665:AcousticISO 15665 is an international standard setting classes for acoustic pipework insulation systems. Insulation systems are classifi ed by their insertion loss performance and the diameter of pipe onto which they are applied.
The standard allows noise control engineers to select the correct insulation system during the design stage in order to ensure that specifi ed noise targets are met.

The First Sound Control Systems to Minimise the Risk of Under Insulation Corrosion
ARMAFLEXArmafl ex is the worlds leading fl exible elastomeric insulation material. Combining an excel-lent thermal conductivity with a closed cell structure, Armafl ex is renowned for its built-in water vapour barrier, its resistance to water ingress and its long term durability. Unlike other insulation materials Armafl ex requires no external vapour barrier and will maintain its thermal properties over a long period of time.As a dust and fi bre free material Armafl ex has the ideal combination of properties that make it the thermal insulation material of choice for many large scale industrial and offshore projects.
ARMASOUND 240Delivering optimal performance at lower thicknesses than traditional materials, ArmaSound 240 is a uniquely advanced open cell acoustic insulation material. With a peak absorption frequency determined by the insulation thickness and the material density ArmaSound 240 can be engineered to target specifi c problem noise frequencies. Thanks to a density much greater than traditional acoustic absorption materials, ArmaSound 240 is also suitable for some applications that may also call for an acoustic airborne noise barrier.ArmaSound 240 provides a dust and fi bre free solution that is suitable for use in a range of demanding environments.
ARMASOUND Barrier EVinyl sound barrier mat loaded with naturally occurring minerals. The product is free of lead, unrefi ned aromatic oils and bitumen. It is excellent at reducing the transmission of airborne sound and in enhancing the insertion loss performance of pipe insulation.
ARMA-CHEK RArmaChek R is a particularly resilient, non metallic, covering system. Markedly reducing the corrosion and installation issues associated with metallic covering systems ArmaChek R has been designed to work in harmony with Armafl ex insulation, expanding and contracting as required. It is also used to enhance the insertion loss performance of our acoustic insulation systems.
