MEMORANDUM

Antimicrobial resistance has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization as both a ldquomajor public health issuerdquo and ldquoone of the three greatest threats to human healthrdquo1 Appropriate use of antimicrobials delays the development of resistance and studies have demonstrated that requirement of indications on antimicrobials can decrease inappropriate use2 To support antimicrobial stewardship efforts and best serve our patients Regions Hospital is introducing medication indications within the electronic health record for antimicrobials prescribed for patients being treated with Regions Hospital and HealthPartners SpecialtySurgery Center As of June 21st 2017 indications will be required for all IV IM oral and enteral antimicrobials

For antimicrobials that are part of order sets for specific indications the indication will be pre-selected For all other orders the person ordering the antimicrobial must choose an indication from a pre-determined list or

ldquootherrdquo to type in additional information for antimicrobial selection

Here is an image of the indications and how it will look on the MAR

This change will not only support the antimicrobial stewardship program at Regions and the HealthPartners enterprise as well as aligning Regions with the metro standards as this is a requirement at many other local organizations

For further detail on all of the efforts related to supporting antimicrobial stewardship please check for upcoming myLearning trainings by searching for ldquoAntimicrobial Stewardshiprdquo

Please send any additional questions to Dr Becca Peglow (SarahRPeglowHealthPartnersCom) or Mary Ullman PharmD (MaryAUllmanHealthPartnersCom)
