T4 Pilot: Communities of Practice 2 communities of practice x 4 evening meetings

This pilot programme will explore the use of professional learning communities to support teachers in the T4 subjects to develop their teaching, learning and assessment practices. Teacher feedback from CPD events places significant importance on the opportunity these events provide for professional learning through conversations with colleagues. This may, in part, be attributed to the fact that many secondary schools have very small T4 departments and the opportunity to engage in professional dialogue in the T4 subject areas is limited.

November 2019 to May 2020

Page 10: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICE FOR TEACHERS · 2019-11-13 · Technology Enhanced Learning strategies to improve the student learning experience will be explored (this feature is

In addition to these teacher-identified needs, there is a growing research consensus that one-off, event-based CPD is of limited effectiveness and that CPD should actively involve teachers in their own learning with colleagues and is a long-term process. The work of Linda Darling Hammond & Milbrey McLaughlin (1996), Day (1999), Kennedy (2005, 2014), Fullan (2006), Mujis et al. (2014) calls for models of professional learning factor in: •in-school and local capacity building re development of teacher skills and expertise •sustained provision, supported by modelling, coaching and collective problem solving around specific problems of practice action research grounded in enquiry, reflection, experimentation and engagement in concrete tasks •professional collaboration and interaction, involving a sharing of knowledge among educators and a focus on teachers’ communities of practice The use of professional learning communities is also in keeping with recent policy, (e.g. The Interim Review of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy (2016) and the Teaching council’s Cosán framework (2016)) which have recommended that PLCs should be utilised to as a form of CPD to develop teachers’ pedagogical knowledge. The pilot programme will investigate the practicalities and effectiveness of professional learning communities in two reasons and utilise the learnings therein to consider the long-term potential of PLCs to support teaching and learning in T4.

In-school Support and Sustained Support for T4

Currently in-school support is offered in T4, based on school-identified needs. This form of support will continue to be promoted in 2019-2020 and progressed to place a greater emphasis on developing effective approaches for teaching, learning and assessment to reflect STEM policy, the Digital Learning Framework and Looking at our Schools 2016. The use of professional learning communities for sustained support in developing teaching, learning and assessment will be explored via a pilot programme (for further details, see above).

School Support for SPHE areas including Sustained Support

The Health and Wellbeing team will offer school support including more sustained models of support in each of these areas. Teaching & Learning in SPHE - through this area, teachers of SPHE will be supported through the methodologies and content of the SPHE curriculum at Junior Cycle Short Course and Syllabus. As there is no initial teacher education for SPHE, teachers require a significant amount of support in this area. As the SPHE curriculum encompasses areas such as Mental Health, Anti-Bullying and Substance Misuse, the nature of the support is varied. Many schools avail of sustained support in this area to train up a group of SPHE teachers in the SPHE Curriculum as well as whole staff sessions on areas such as Anti-Bullying and Substance Misuse. RSE & LGBT - RSE is a core feature of SPHE curriculum at Junior Cycle and a minimum of six lessons must be taught in every year of Post-Primary education up to and including Leaving Cert. Teachers require continuous CPD in this area due to the highly sensitive nature of the content as well as being proactive and responsive to the needs of students who identify as LGBT. This support often takes place with a core group of teachers, as well as a whole staff information session on LGBT awareness. Teacher Wellbeing - This is typically offered as a two hour after school session with the whole staff. It is a very popular form of in school support as it explores the various practical ways in which one’s own wellbeing can be maintained and supported.

School Support and Sustained Support

PDST will continue to provide support for schools in embedding digital technologies in teaching, learning and assessment. A particular focus this year will centre on engagement with the sustained support model. Sustained support has constituted a key method by which the Digital Technologies team has effectively supported schools over the past number of years and so we have made the informed decision to engage in more instances of this form of support. Here, advisors will visit a school on a number of occasions throughout the duration of their support, allowing us to provide bespoke CPD in the areas required and consequently evaluate their implementation in the school context. As we have seen when engaged in this sustained support model in the past, this approach will provide a more meaningful and transformative CPD experience for the schools and teachers involved, aiding them to embed digital technologies into teaching, learning and assessment practices more effectively and longitudinally than perhaps a once-off visit to the school could facilitate.

September 2019 - June 2020

Digital Learning Framework Seminars (Mop ups) Approx. 11 PP Seminars

These 1 day seminars for school leaders and digital technology coordinating teachers will be held via the Education Centre network. It is proposed that approximately 42 Primary and 11 Post-primary seminars will be held. Advisors assigned to each cluster provide support in the following key areas: cluster meetings, CPD support, online facilitation and supporting the lead coordinator of the cluster in the area of project management. We support 32 Digital and 10 STEM clusters participating in this initiative. As each cluster is unique in terms of its focus and the stakeholders involved, the support provided by the PDST advisors is tailored to suit the individual cluster’s agenda and needs.

September 2019 - June 2020
