Presented by A/Prof Phillippe Zimet and Dr Vivian Liu

Course description:Have you ever thought that Root Canal Treatment is confusing? Does root canal treatmentconjure up a web of mysticism? By dividing the root canal treatment process into a series ofsteps and creating defined outcomes for the Root Canal Treatment Process much of this veilof confusion is removed. From this introduction, the choice of file systems and obturationtechnique can be chosen. A combination of presentation and a hands on component willcomplement each other.

Learning outcomes:• Introduce the biological basis for pulpal and periapical disease • Describe how the Root Canal Treatment Process resolves periapical disease. • Introduce defined aims and objectives to steps in the Root Canal Treatment Process. • Provide a basis for choosing the instruments to shape the root canal as part of the root

canal treatment process. • Relate the shape of the root canal to obturation technique.

Frequently Asked Questions - Continuing Professional Development (Australia) - CPD Points. How Does it Work?Reprinted from the Dental Board of Australiawebsite at www.dentalboard.gov.au

The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act2009 (National Law) as in force in each state and ter-ritory came into effect on 1 July 2010. Under the Na-tional Law there is a mandatory requirement forregistrants to participate in continuing professionaldevelopment (CPD), the Board has therefore devel-oped a Registration Standard in relation to CPD.

From 1 July 2010 all dental practitioners in Australiahave to meet the CPD requirements set by the DentalBoard of Australia’s (Board) Registration Standard(approved by Ministerial Council). The RegistrationStandard and the CPD Guideline (which provides moredetail about CPD requirements) are published on theBoard’s website at www.dentalboard.gov.au.

These responses to frequently asked questions mayprovide dental practitioners with further detail and un-derstanding about the Board’s requirements for CPD.

What range and variation of CPD activities is ex-pected by the Board from dental practitioners?

The Board has not specified any mandatory CPD ac-tivities and the Board expects dental practitioners toengage in a range of CPD activities.

There are no set limits on the number of hours a den-

tal practitioner can spend on particular types of CPDactivities, however it is expected that dental practi-tioners will undertake a variety of activities in linewith the objectives of CPD. For example a dentalpractitioner engaged in a formal supervision programof another dental practitioner or a dental practitionerwho oversees examinations should not rely on thoseactivities solely for meeting the requirements of theCPD Registration Standard. Similarly, reading journalarticles or preparing and delivering lectures on dentaltopics to dental practitioners should not be the onlyCPD activities undertaken to meet the requirementsof the CPD Registration Standard.

How does a dental practitioner evaluate theCPD activities undertaken?

The Board has not specified an approval process forcourses or course providers who provide CPD. How-ever, the CPD guidelines detail some requirementsand expectations at point 4. Registrants must makea professional judgement about the appropriatenessof the CPD activity undertaken.

When deciding what CPD activities to undertake, practitioners should first consider if the activity relatesto the objectives of their personal CPD plan. Theyshould assess the stated aims, objectives and out-comes of the activity. Practitioners can also evaluatethe suitability of CPD activities against any or all ofthe following criteria and set of questions.

How does a dental practitioner assess the con-tent of the CPD being provided and what is thescientific or practical basis of the materialbeing presented?

Activities should address contemporary clinical andprofessional issues. Scientific and clinical activitiesshould reflect accepted dental practice or be basedon critical appraisal of scientific literature. The contentmust as far as possible be evidence based withoutexaggerated claims. Activities should have scientificintegrity and independence. Clinical content shouldreflect best practice care and evidence based treat-ment that is supported by scientific and biomedicalresearch

What types of information should I retain on myCPD record/log book when I have attended acourse or program?

Retain the certificate of attendance / verification ofparticipation, that contains at least the following information: • Your name • Provider’s name • Activity name • Date, time and location of activity • Number of CPD hours (excluding breaks) and Type

of CPD hours (scientific/non scientific) that are awarded as a result of completing the activity

• Such certification need not be a formal document.

The record of participation may take the form of an email or end of year summary of the person’sactivities.

What are clinically or scientifically basedactivities?

These activities relate to the scientific, clinical or tech-nical aspects of oral health care. Activities about in-fection control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)or patient record keeping for instance would be clas-sified clinical/scientific; as would a range of topics re-lating to oral health or particular dental proceduressuch as endodontics, caries treatment, crown prepa-rations etc.

What are non-scientific activities?

These are activities that are indirectly related to, butsupportive of dental care and include courses aboutpractice management and dento-legal responsibilities. The activities need to contribute to the maintenanceand enhancement of a dental practitioner’s knowl-edge, skills and performance of oral health care.

The subject matter of CPD may also include activitiesin dentistry outside the dental practitioner’s usualpractice, for example dental prosthetists may under-take study about implants, drug therapies and digitalradiography; dental therapists and hygienists on pros-thetics and occlusal therapy or orthodontics. This typeof subject matter would be considered a scientific ac-tivity. Similarly Specialists do not have to attend CPDactivities limited to their area of specialty. Practitioners

are encouraged to reflect on their own practice andidentify areas where they can derive maximum benefitfrom CPD.

How many hours of CPD does a personregistered as both a dental hygienist and dentaltherapist need to do?

If you are registered as both a dental hygienist anddental therapist you only need to complete 60 hoursover the three years.

How many hours of CPD does a practitionerwho only works part-time need to do?

Regardless of whether you practise one day a year orfive days a week, you need to complete 60 hours ofCPD. If you are practising at all, patients are entitledto expect the same level of knowledge and skillwhether you are full time or part time and thereforeCPD requirements are the same.

How much CPD does a non-practising registrantneed to do?

None. The requirements do not apply to those withthis type of registration.

Can hours spent undertaking clinical super-vision as part of an employment role count asCPD time?

No, as it is a part of your employment role.

Are the number of hours adjusted if a personregisters during the CPD cycle?

The only time CPD hours are pro-rata is if you are reg-istered for the first time part way through a CPD cycle. The number of CPD hours that a new registrant willneed to complete will be calculated on a pro-ratabasis to the nearest half-year.

What happens if a practitioner accumulatesmore than 60 hours in the cycle?

If you accumulate more than 60 hours in the threeyear cycle you cannot roll over the additional hoursinto the next cycle. The hours specified in the CPD reg-istration standard are a minimum requirement and itis expected that many practitioners will attend a fargreater number of hours of CPD than this minimum.

Do all CPD activities have the same weighting?

In general, attending a course for 7 hours (excludingbreaks) would be equivalent to 7 hours of CPD, pro-vided that the time is invested in CPD programs thatmeet the Board’s guidelines. What has been knownas ‘Continuing Education, or CE credits’ will in mostcases translate to hourly CPD credits.
