Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) looking for ways to attract, incentivise and retain talented employees (beyond salary and wages) are often attracted to the idea of providing some form of “equity” to those employees. The Personal Property Securities Act applies to most businesses and individuals, and since its inception in January 2012, many businesses have failed to adequately protect their assets through their lack of understanding of this legislation. Professional advisors may also be at risk if they do not fully appreciate the potential consequences to their clients when advising them. The presenters will provide some case studies and the practical impact the legislation has had on businesses. It will consider some lessons that clients can learn to protect their businesses from risk.

Professional practices: Managing your capital and debtorsSteven Marcato

Managing your working capital and debtors is a challenge for all professional services firms no matter what size it is. To assist in good practice management we use benchmarks such as Lockup, WIP and Debtor Days.

So what levels should we be aiming for? Are our aspirations close to what is reality? What can we do to bring these closer together? We should also have robust credit control policies in place. This session will discuss what is best practice credit control policy and procedure and how additional financing products may be introduced to complement debtor management processes. Steven will share his experiences and insights on the practicalities and challenges professional services firms face when managing working capital and debtors.
