Endeavour Award Holder receives grant to continue breakthrough research at home university

Strengthening links between the Indian and Australian scientific communities, Endeavour Award Holder Dr Sanjay Chavan will return to his home country of India next month after receiving a grant from a research fund. Dr Chavan’s team, consisting of five researchers, was one of 10 to receive funding from the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund out of 137 applicants. Dr Chavan, 42, originally from Kolhapur, India, came to Canberra to study at the Australian National University (ANU) through the Endeavour Awards program in April 2011. The Endeavour Awards is a scholarship program bringing high achieving researchers and professionals like Dr Chavan to Australia to undertake long or short term study, research and professional development. “It is a very good platform to make a research link with the Australian scientific community,” Dr Chavan says of his Endeavour Research Fellowship.

“Our research is in the field of advanced materials/nanotechnology, in which India and Australia are making major breakthroughs.” On his return to India, Dr Chavan and his team will be working on their project titled Hybrid organometallic-coordination complex materials for nonlinear optics. There will also be a team of six based in Australia at the ANU.

Dr Chavan, whose home tertiary institution is Shivaji University, plans to use the grant money to appoint staff to work on the project, and to buy consumable items and equipment to help the research run smoothly. He will also need to organise exchange visits between the teams based in India and Australia. “The research described in our project is in an area of metal-containing functional materials and is of strategic importance to both Australia and India; this will help to strengthen the research link between the two countries.” - Profile prepared by Sarah Bastian, Austraining International 2011. The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad. The Endeavour Awards are a part of the Australia Awards initiative. The Australia Awards have been established to maximise the benefit to Australia of its extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties between Australia and our neighbours. Post-selection support services for the Endeavour Awards are managed by Austraining International on behalf of the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
