3) READING SKILLS

A newspaper is better than a magazine and on a seashore is better than a street. At first, it is better to run than walk. Also, you may have to try several times. It takes some skill but it is easy to learn. Even young children can enjoy it. Once successful, complications are minimal. Birds seldom get too close. One needs lots of room. Rain soaks in very fast. Too many people doing the same thing can also cause problems. If there are no complications, it can be very peaceful. A rock will serve as an anchor. If anything breaks loose from it; however, you will not get a second chance. (Bradford & Johnson, in Hermosa, 1996)

REALITY CHECK NO. 1WE ARE MILLENNIALS!

Humans have shorter attention span than goldfish, thanks to smartphones.

A Microsoft study highlights the deteriorating attention span of humans, saying it has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds.

Five Strategies to engage today’s students (Price, 2009)

Relevant learning for today’s students

Research-based approaches to instruction

Rationales for course outcomes, policies and assessments

Relaxed and participatory learning environments

Relational opportunities and rapport with professors

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A FLIPPED CLASS

You are responsible for information gathering outside the classroom.

Then, in-class time is re-purposed for inquiry, application, and assessment.

Phases:

1 – Info gathering (watch video lecture, reading homeworks, etc.)

2 – Preliminary assessment (online quiz, in-class MCQs, tweets, practice sheets)

3 – Assimilation of info (problem-based learning, task-based learning, peer instruction, think-pair-share, think-group-share, MCQs)

4 – Homework (for deepening)

Page 38: Prof. Ana Katrina P. de Jesus DHUM, CAS, UPLB. Use your body to signify your answer. If your answer is A, raise your left hand B, raise your right hand
