Make the Cut. Wahl Educator and Artistic Director Anthony Barmer

advocates using the appropriate cutting techniques to cover or

camoufl age thinning areas. “Blending and tapering with the clipper-

over-comb technique is best; don’t cut the thinning areas against the grain

(with an attachment comb), which can really expose those areas,” Barmer

recommends. “If the hairline is weak in certain spots, use the clipper-over-

comb technique or attachment comb to taper the hairline from long to short to

give a uniform appearance.”

Be Blunt. Mike Karg, Owner of Karg New York, believes that thinning hair

shouldn’t be worn too long. “Cut the hair dry, with a precision shear or thinner

shears; you can use a blending shear around the nape, but defi nitely stay

away from buzz cuts, which show more of the scalp,” Karg suggests. “Create

fullness by cutting it blunt; using a shear over comb, you have more control,

especially with a straight edge versus a blending or texturizing shear.”

Less Is More. When working with thinning hair, try a lighter touch. “Going

shorter in length is actually going to work better, and if you add too many

layers, you thin the hair out,” explains Redken Artist Matthew Tyldesley. “It’s

not always about blending; doing one length makes it look thicker, using a

blunt horizontal line to create that visual density.” Tyldesley also recommends

using lightweight shampoo and less conditioner to avoid weighing the hair

down.

Stay On Schedule. Barmer notes that regular cuts are crucial for thinning

hair types. “I recommend that these clients come in every two weeks for a

cut; thinning hair is actually less noticeable with regular cuts,” Barmer relates.

“Hair grows out at different stages and different lengths, so you want to cut

the longer hair and keep the thinning areas maintained.”

Wahl’s Anthony Barmer opts for

clipper-over-comb techniques to cut

thinning strands.

Mike Karg suggests employing

blunt cuts to create the illusion

of fullness.

Our experts share additional tips for thinning-hair clients:• Protect the hair that’s there—

advise clients to wear a hat so the

scalp doesn’t get sunburned.

• Off er a head massage to boost

circulation.

• Employ neutral wording—use

terms like “less dense” instead of

“balding” or “receding.”

• Avoid heavy pomades or

separating gel; try matte or cream-

based products that expand the

look of the cuticle.

• Recommend body-boosting styling

tools, like Velcro or hot rollers.
