ConsultationwiththeESOcommunityisrecommended.Whatappearsself-evidentistheneedfortheAuthority,ifestablished,tofunctionacrossDVAandDefenceboundaries.Reportingbytheentityofsuchoutcomesasfollowswouldbeakeyfunction:
• EffectivenessoftherehabilitationprocessatallstagesstartingwithDefenceandprogressingtoDVA;and• EffectivenessoftransitionprogramsconductedbyDefencewithassessmentsundertakenatdischarge,at

Recommendation7.2CareerPlanningandFamilyEngagementforTransition
AlthoughDFWAsupportstheessenceoftherecommendation,itispredicatedfirstonwhetheraJointTransitionAuthorityisestablished,andsecondly,onhowfartheAuthority’sresponsibilitiesshouldextend.Shoulditextendto‘ensuring’amemberundertakesbothin-serviceandpostcareerplanning?Avexedquestionifmandated.Certainly,thereappearsgoodreasonto‘encourage’membersbutinpracticalterms,manyjoinwithnopre-conceivedideathattheirservicewouldbeshort-lived,particularlybywayofcompulsoryadministrativeormedicalreasons.ButitisacceptedthatdischargefromtheADFissomewhatanunnervingexperienceformany.Earlypreparationforitis,includingtheinvolvementoffamilies,canonlymaximisethechanceofasuccessfultransitionoutcome.
