Performance Description and Storyboard ____________________________________________________________________________

__ Nekomeshi translated as ‘Cat food’ is a light japanese ‘experimental jpop’ song made by

Yakushimaru Etsuko; who’s known for her very light but fast form of singing, understated and often accompanied by a bubbly instrumental track.

Her songs are most comparable to the music of the japanese artist ‘Daoko’ whose music follows much of the same stylings but with a focus on more rap style lyricism. The similarities in their work should likely follow through to their videos, as both have a similar audience of 2030 year olds.

I’ve chosen to animate the video mostly for the sake of time constraints and work efficiency, but the technique is common for this style of artist, as both Daoko and Etsuko the artist in question have worked with animation companies before in partnership for opening themes to animated programs,

and both audiences likely extend from that audience in aesthetic.

The target audience as a recent survey implies is 16 to 20 year old fans of animation.This audience matches the expectations of the artists, whom’ve already had animation experience in the

past.

The music video will conform to these genres and techniques;

Animation Narrative Interpretive

Cutting to the beat

All of which are common to be used together and have been proven in many music videos before now.

Lyrics ____________________________________________________________________________

__ The lyrics to the song are… well… ‘simplistic’ is one word to describe them… The song’s lyrics themselves are very simplistic, though they do feed into the cutesy relaxing mood of the genre, and work well with the visuals. Though i will list them here, let it be known that the lyrics too the song had very little governance over the story apart from the fact that there is a cat in both. Nekomeshi ‘Cat food’ Animated Music video

_____________________________________________________________________

Scene 1 (Intro):

Exterior, Hillside, daytime. The shot opens with a clear view of the setting of the video, a small rural town. But during the shot a cat slowly pans into view and is brought into focus. Exterior, Bus stop, daytime. Shot 2 establishes our second character, a girl on her way home. The girl takes the opposite side of the frame, as the two characters face towards each other between shots. Exterior, Field, daytime. This shot acts as a continuation of the cat’s shot, where we see him stretching across frame towards the same side as the girl, implying their meeting in the next shot. Exterior, Town, daytime. The girl looks over to the camera in surprise, where a closeup shows the glint in here eye as we cut to a lowangled long shot of the two seeing each other for the first time. Cut to white screen. We then get a small montage of the girl trying to befriend the cat, shown from the first person, she then reaches into her bag and grabs an apple for the cat to play with. The apple’s colour (red) is a common thematic element that links the two characters together in the story.

Page 14: Production Booklet for CMP Music Video Production · Production Booklet for ... much of the same stylings but with a focus on more rap style lyricism. The similarities in their work

Exterior, Town, sunset. The scene fades between two shots of the characters relaxing on the side of the street, girl resting against a bike rack. Coming closer she notices the cat’s collar, and a closeup to her eye fades out to a flashback of their relationship. Three panning images go across the screen, surrounded by a crayon textured white void, firstly; a shot of the two meeting, as the girl sits in the rain keeping the cat company, next; a shot of the two riding a bicycle, displaying a development of their relationship, cut short by the next shot that brings into focus the cat, now dead from old age, in front of the crying child. We then fade back to the girl’s eyes, welling in happy tears. Then followed by her picking the cat up excited. Finally, a montage of the two walking together links day and night together, as we see them walk to the hillside of the begining of the story. Exterior, Hillside, night time. The girl lays with the cat, as the two look up to the sky, where two stars fly above the town, then cut back to the cat’s empty collar, implying the leaving of the cat once more, giving the girl one more day with her childhood pet, before drifting off to sleep.
