OPPORTUNITY OUT OF THE

IMPOSSIBLE.—

—WE CREATE

—Founded in Vienna, Austria, in 1854, Waagner-Biro has been a pioneer in high quality steel engineering for nearly 160 years. The company has amassed vast experience and an extensive portfolio, and today employs more than 1,000 employees across 15 locations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Our mastery of steel engineering, as well as the potential of steel as a material, are showcased in capital cities around the world, from the Lord Norman Foster designed Queen Elizabeth II Great Court in the British Museum, London, to the Yas Marina Hotel, Abu Dhabi. And our commitment to achieving the extra-ordinary has extended into the design and build of bridges that are as much landmarks as they are well-realised and functional infrastructure projects.

The Puente Continental, for example, is the longest suspension bridge in Peru, while the Donaustadt Bridge is one of Vienna’s most recognisable modern landmarks.

In 1967, Waagner-Biro brought its competence, skill and inge-nuity to the Gulf with a milestone project – the construction of the Al Maqta Bridge in Abu Dhabi, the first permanent point of crossing between Abu Dhabi and the main land. For 45 years, we have provided both governments and private clients in the region with reliable, technically-advanced and cost-efficient turnkey engineering solutions, designing, building and maintai-ning iconic structures such as Dubai‘s Al Maktoum Bridge and the Floating Bridge.—

— The Bridge Engineering Division of Waagner Biro Gulf operates throughout the GCC in the fields of bridge, mechani-cal and steel construction, and maintenance.

Flexible, adaptable and strong enough for areas prone to earth-quakes, steel also requires shorter construction times while providing long service life. This makes it perfect for this region. Steel is also 100% recyclable which plays an instrumental role in achieving some of the highest green build regulations that are now being implemented across the UAE and GCC.

Waagner-Biro’s excellent reputation often plays a decisive role in the acquisition of new projects, particularly in the UAE market for the design and built of moveable bridges.

We offer complete turnkey bridge solutions. Led by a multi-disciplinary team of civil, mechanical, structural and electrical engineers, and supported by the expertise of our head office in Vienna, we can handle the entire process from design through build and maintenance of a bridge, to eventual dismantling if required.

Combining design, consultancy and construction under one roof means better communication, project management and a more cost and time effective end product. Our interdisciplina-ry team covers everything from construction to electrical, plus we have our own fabrication yard and workshop to produce parts immediately as required.—

— This covers architecturally-sophisticated bridges, such as cable-stayed, suspension and arch bridges, as well as plate-gir-ders, truss and pipeline bridges. Bridges that are not special just because of their sheer size and span, but also because they are visually-arresting, often becoming local landmarks with designs to capture the imagination. They provide functionality –connec-tions for vehicles, pedestrians and pipelines – as well as creating features that visually dominate and define their landscapes..—

— SUSPENSION BRIDGES Suspension bridges are used for the biggest spans. Although they are nowadays most economically applicable for spans of more

— SPECIAL BRIDGES —

than 800m, for aesthetic purposes they can be used for bridges with a span as small as 100m.

The structure consists of supporting pylons with main suspen-sion cables attached on both sides. Hangers are mounted on the suspension cables which hold the deck.

Waagner Biro completed in 2011 the construction of the out-standing Puente Continental in Peru.

— CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES

The average spans of cable-stayed bridges is generally between 100m and 1,000m. They often make spectacular landmarks, as is the case with the Zabeel Bridge –the UAE’s first cable-stay bridge, designed and built by Waagner Biro Gulf in 2006.

Cable-stayed bridges consist of a long main support which is suspended from a tower with inclined hangers. Towers can be

designed in numerous ways (e.g. A-towers, Y-towers, central tower, two towers). The cables can be fixed in a fan-shaped (see Zabeel Bridge) or harp-shaped arrangement.

As with suspension bridges, guarding against wind-based vibrati-on is extremely important. A stable structure can be achieved by an aerodynamically favourable design of the bridge cross-section and the cables.

— PLATE-GIRDER BRIDGES

Waagner Biro Gulf ’s plate-girder and box-girder bridges are amongst the most flexible bridge products on the market, as they can be adapted to numerous spans and shapes, although they are typically employed for spans between 30m and 150m.

In both plate-girder and box-girder bridges, a steel girder sheath is combined with a reinforced steel deck. Steel decks are fre-quently designed as orthotropic decks.

For small spans with solid elevations, such as overpasses and pedestrian bridges, plate-girders offer particularly economic solutions.

Steel bridges of multiple continuous girders can be used to create spans of up to 250m, while girders with variable heights, known as coved girders, are usual for spans over 100m.

— ARCH BRIDGES Arched bridges are characterised by their elegant shape and visi-ble support function, as well as their ability to offer economical solutions for spans of 50m to 300m. These were qualities that the Abu Dhabi government was looking for when Waagner Biro constructed the Al Maqta Bridge, the region’s first arch bridge, in 1967.The Al Maqta Bridge is integral to the histories of both Waagner Biro and Abu Dhabi, marking the company’s first project in the Gulf, as well as the very first road access bridge connecting Abu Dhabi Island with the mainland. Today, that bridge stands as something of a monument.

The Al Maqta Bridge was Waagner Biro Gulf ‘s first project to be realised in the UAE in 1967.

Depending on the requirements of the location, an arch bridge deck can be suspended on hangers (suspended deck) or positi-oned on supporting columns over the arches (standing deck).

— TRUSS BRIDGES

These bridges are built for spans of up to 250m and are often used for roads and railways. The main supports are formed as triangular truss girder structures, which have the distinct ad-vantage of relatively lower weights for both the overall structure and the individual components (the truss beams) that are either bolted or fully welded together to form the structure.

Truss bridges which normally feature truss girders on both sides, either above or below the deck, are a field in which Waagner Biro Gulf has unrivalled experience. The road bridge access

to the Yas Hotel on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, for example, is a creative demonstration of both truss and modular bridges, with cladding later added to incorporate architectural features.

— PIPELINE BRIDGES

Spanning anything from 100m to 500m, pipeline bridges are used when oil and gas lines, conveying belts, water pipes and drainage channels have to pass over large rivers or valleys. They often provide a more cost-effective solution than going through soil.

Typically taking the form of suspension bridges, the system is characterised by two V-shaped, inclined support walls, sup-plemented by an upwardly arched central pre-stressed cable running along the pipe line.

As an example of a typical truss bridge, here is a pedestrian bridge over the Damascus road in Dubai, UAE.

— Movable bridges provide a connection across water while still allowing for shipping access. These bridges can be complex to design and build. Providing time and cost-effective turnkey projects takes particular experience and expertise in this field.Waagner Biro is the only company in the UAE with references for moveable bridges, with specialist skills in erecting bridges based on both electro-hydraulic and electro-mechanical drive systems. Our references not only include the only movable bridges in the UAE, but also a number of the country’s most recognisable landmarks, such as the Maktoum Bridge and the Floating Bridge in Dubai.—

— BASCULE BRIDGES

In cities where space is restricted and, therefore, the option of transversing traffic up for higher access is not available, bascule bridges provide one of the simplest solutions for crossing road traffic and waterways.

Single leaf bascule bridges, or symmetrical bascule bridges with two wings, allow passage for ships without height restrictions. These are particularly suitable for shipping canals close to the coast where large ocean-going ships travel.

The decks of the moving bridge wings for road and railway traffic are usually made of steel. Simple and proven electro-mechanical and electro-hydraulic drives are available but, today, the most economic option is represented by electro-hydraulic drives with hydraulic pistons. These guarantee maximum availability with low maintenance outlay.

Waagner Biro has worked on the Al Maktoum Bridge at all of its stages, from design and construction of the first bridge across Dubai Creek through to a second set of widening works in 2007. Our dedicated maintenance division has also maintained the bridge (which opens completely in just 30 seconds) for more than 30 years.

— SWING BRIDGES

Swing bridges are yet another field in which Waagner Biro Gulf in not only a leader but a pioneer. They are suitable for bridging inland waterways where high road or railway bridges are not appropriate due to financial or building reasons.

In most cases, swing bridges are designed as symmetrical structures with central piers. The deck pivots roughly 90° around the central pier to create two shipping channels with unlimited passage height – one on either side of the central pier. To bridge larger shipping channels, it can be advantageous to combine swing bridges with fixed bridges. In such cases, a higher deck is selected for the entire bridge so that the clearance height is achieved for normal ships; the swing bridge only needs to be operated for larger vessels.

— VERTICAL LIFT & SUBMERSIBLE BRIDGES

Classic vertical lift bridges are traditionally used for bridging inland waterways in restricted city areas. They are mechanically fairly simple, making them more cost-effective options than other forms of movable bridges; however the passage height for shipping is restricted.

The support structure of the bridge is usually made of steel to reduce the weight being lifted and to provide an economic solution for the lifting mechanism. The bridge is connected via supporting cables to the counterweights which are normally located in all four corners. The weight of the bridge girders is thereby compensated for to a great extent and the remaining load is raised and lowered by a cable winches.

Waagner-Biro was the design-build contractor for the machinery of the Botlek Bridge in the Netherlands, which is the world’s biggest vertical lift bridge. It is those expertise and experience that we at Waagner Biro continue to draw upon and develop.

The Al Maktoum Bridge built by Waagner Biro Guf first in 1967. It underwent various enlargements and was last widened in 2007.

Submersible bridges are, mechanically, very similar to vertical lift bridges and, in some cases, offer the most economic option of all. Rather than the deck being raised, submersible bridges lower the bridge below the water level. The advantage is that this type of bridge does not restrict height of vessels passing beneath, although it does limit the draft. The lack of a raised lifting mecha-nism can make submersible bridges more aesthetically pleasing options too.

— In early 2007, the Dubai government approached Waagner Biro Gulf with an interesting problem. It needed a six-lane bridge over Dubai Creek to connect Bur Dubai and Deira. It had to be economical and, most pressingly of all, it needed to be open within six months. As a turnkey design-build contractor with peerless in-house design, manufacturing and installation capabilities, Waagner Biro Gulf was capable of realising this concept.

The result was the 365m long Floating Bridge – a combination of a plate-girder bridge, a floating pontoon bridge and a swing bridge. Thanks to a state-of-the-art polystyrene plate solution, the two main concrete pontoons float while supporting thousands of tonnes of traffic. In the centre of the bridge is a steel pontoon which can be opened by floating in and out, allowing vessels of unrestricted height to pass.

The bridge was actually assembled in just 23 days, with the who-le process – from concept to delivery – taking just six months. Initially intended as a temporary crossing, such was the quality of workmanship and success of the project, it has become a modern Dubai landmark and still provides one of the main crossings over the creek.—

— PANELBRIDGES —

— This flexible, modular bridge concept is one of Waagner-Biro’s specialist products. The range of applications is wide, but our panel bridges are most commonly employed as emergency bridges, military bridges and temporary site bridges.—

— EMERGENCY BRIDGESIn cases of emergency or catastrophe, such as flooding, inter-rupted connections must be restored as rapidly as possible. Emergency bridges can be used as temporary pedestrian, road or even railway bridges.

— MILITARY BRIDGESThe basic concept and components of the bridge system are compatible for both military and civil temporary bridges. Our panel bridges have been designed in compliance with military load classes (MLC 30-70) and according to the required const-ruction span and deck widths.

— TEMPORARY SITE BRIGESTemporary bridges can be used to maintain road and pedestrian traffic during building work. The simple assembly means that building companies can easily erect the bridges using their own employees.

Panel bridges share much in common with truss bridges, emplo-ying a modular bridge system that can be easily adapted to dif-ferent span widths, deck widths and even different loads, thanks to a panel by panel construction method that uses exchangeable elements.

There are many advantages of these panel bridges. Each module weighs less than 400kg, so, if necessary, a bridge can be built with manpower rather than cranes, while connection is made with pins rather than welding.

With minimal training, a large workforce, such as the military, can put up a bridge in just one day. If space permits, a bridge of up to 60m can be built on land and then launched across a river,

making panel bridges ideal for emergency situations. Finally, pa-nel bridges can be easily disassembled, relocated and re-erected time-after-time. They also retain a high resale value after use.

Waagner-Biro’s services go far beyond the design, manufacture and sale of panel bridges. In addition to delivery, our customers receive comprehensive technical support from our experienced engineering team on every aspect, from static calculations and

system planning to assembly instructions and assembly supervi-sion.

Waagner Biro panel bridges are also available to rent which can be an attractive and economic option, particularly for emergency bridges which have usage periods of just a few months in many cases. Moreover, we can provide storage and delivery of panel bridges. If appropriately stored, it is possible to have one or

— Waagner Biro modular bridges are flexible and extendible bridge solutions that can effectively be bought ‘off the peg’ and adapted to special customer requirements. The modular concept offers all the advantages of modern pre-build bridge construc-tion and, simultaneously, a top level of flexibility with regards to bridge width, span width and load. They are suitable for all types of pedestrian, road and railway traffic.—

The most common spans are 35m to 60m, with the usual interval stages of 5m, although bridge span widths of up to 120m can be implemented with the modular construction method. Several individual bridges can be easily combined to form longer bridges. Bridge widths vary between 4m for a single lane and 7.3 m for a double lane bridge road, while multiple lane modular bridges can also be supplied upon customer request. The pe-destrian lanes are normally set up with a width of approximately 0.7m.

The advantages are many fold but all boil down to one thing: simplicity. Modular bridges are available quickly, and the modules are easily transportable due to the low-weight and high-strength steel. The vast majority of the technical work is conducted by Waagner-Biro’s accomplished and experienced team off-site, creating highly-durable, fatigue-resistant and corrosion-protected modules. These can be quickly and easily assembled on-site by unskilled labourers with basic tools, as high strength bolts are used instead of welding.

This all implies a product that is significantly more cost and time-effective. The use of steel and the ease of erection (and, ultimately, dismantling) make modular bridges smart and environmentally-friendly solutions that score highly on green build rating systems, such as Pearl, LEED and breeam.
