STANDARD TRAINING COURSES

PRODUCT SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISK Ensuring chemical regulatory compliance worldwide

PRODUCT SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISK

THE ACADEMY by DHI provides training courses in

topics related to chemicals regulation worldwide, in

particular REACH, GHS, CLP and the EU Biocidal

Products Regulation. We also provide training courses

in the impact that chemicals have on

humans and the environment such as toxicological risk

assessment, ecotoxicology and food regulation.

Keeping track of ever changing requirements in

chemicals regulation is a daunting task. At the same

time, health and environmental impacts of

consumer products have become a visible part of the

public agenda.

This enhances the awareness of the safe use of

chemical substances at the work place, in

production processes and during the final use of the

product.

This one-day course will give you an overall introduction to GHS. Upon completion of the course you will be able to determine your role and obligations under GHS. Furthermore, the course will provide you with tools for chemicals management.

Chemicals, through production, handling, transport and use, pose a potential hazard to human health and the environment. The Globally Harmonized System on classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS) was developed with the aim to enhance protection of human health and the environment through standardised criteria for classification and hazard communication.

The GHS regulations pose a complex challenge for companies producing or marketing chemical substances and mixtures, as well as the users of such chemicals. Meeting national and international legal requirements and optimising documentation involve a major effort, especially as the system develops continuously while striving for harmonisation.

COURSE TOPICS

The GHS background

The scope of GHS

Roles and obligations

Classification criteria

Hazard communication through labels and Safety Data Sheets

GHS globally

GHS management

Hands-on exercises

TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES

Manufacturers of chemical products. Distributors, importers and users of

chemicals who need to evaluate information from their raw material suppliers.

This course is an introductory course to GHS and no prior knowledge of

classification, labelling or other chemicals regulation is required.

This one-day course is an introduction to EUSES and will guide you through the process of making environmental risk assessments of chemicals and biocides. After the course you know how to use emission scenario documents together with EUSES for your dossiers.

EUSES - or the European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances - has been developed to support the risk assessment of new and existing substances and biocides as laid down in European legislation and the EU Technical Guidance Documents. EUSES is a tool for calculation of the Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) and the Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) to assess risks to the environment.

The course will take you through the process of making environmental risk assessments step-by-step.

COURSE TOPICS

The basics of EUSES.

Collection, interpretation and use of physico-chemical data and fate data.

Calculation of the emission of chemicals or biocides into the environment.

Examples from emission scenario documents and how these have been

implemented by EUSES will be given.

Calculation of PEC values by EUSES.

Collection and interpretation of ecotoxicological input data, including how

ecotoxicity data are generated and how you select the right endpoint for your

assessment. You will also be introduced to the general principles applied for

calculating the PNECs.

Risk assessment of chemicals or biocides comparing PEC and PNEC values.

Examples on how to improve the risk assessment will be given.

Hands-on exercises.

TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES

This training course is for everyone working with environmental risk assessments

or registration of chemicals or biocidal products. No prerequisites are required to

attend the course. However, it is an advantage to have some general knowledge

of chemistry and ecotoxicology. Tailor-made courses addressing particular needs

can be arranged on request.

More and more emphasis is put on the prediction of (eco-)toxicological properties of chemicals from non-testing methods, such as QSAR modelling, to minimise costly testing. The aim of this one-day course is to make you familiar with the OECD QSAR Toolbox in order to predict missing data cheaper and faster.

The OECD QSAR Toolbox has been developed within the OECD chemical programme in collaboration with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to support industry and minimise unnecessary testing. During the course we will use the most recently released version of the Toolbox.

After the course you may be able to use the Toolbox to perform the below tasks:

To group chemicals into categories (when physiochemical, human health,

ecotoxicological and/or environmental fate properties or their mode of actions

are similar).

To fill (eco-)toxicological data gaps based on read-across or trend analysis.

To search for published experimental results in approx. 40 databases.

To find out if a target chemical substance is included in national regulatory

inventories.

To evaluate the toxicity of pharmaceutical impurities or of chemicals in medical

devices.

COURSE TOPICS

Basic theory of QSAR

Explaining the steps of the OECD QSAR Toolbox workflow

How to search for data on a chemical in the OECD QSAR Toolbox databases

How to predict e.g. skin sensitisation and AMES mutagenicity potential of a

chemical

How to use the OECD QSAR Toolbox for REACH registrations

TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES

Anyone who wants to explore the possibility of filling data gaps on a scientifically sound basis to save time and money but without having to carry out new laboratory tests. Preferably, you should have good knowledge of chemistry and/or biology, including the various types of toxicity testing and hazard classification end-points.

You are requested to bring your own laptop and the latest version of the Toolbox must be downloaded prior to the workshop. When you register, you will receive further instructions on how to download the Toolbox.

At this one-day-course you will learn how to control allergens in a food production. Furthermore, you will learn how to incorporate risk assessment in overall risk analysis.

Consumers can be allergic to an infinite number of ingredients. However, some allergens cause allergic reactions more frequently. As a result, labelling is required on food containing certain allergens. This includes food containing milk, wheat, egg, shellfish, fish, celery or mustard. It is vital that the labelling is correct as incorrect labelling may be fatal to allergy sufferers.

For a food production comprehensive measures are required to keep track of allergens in production and packaging and on the labelling. We will guide you through the process - from identification of allergens to making the necessary provisions and fulfilling labelling requirements.

COURSE TOPICS

Clarification of food allergy and types of allergens

Why is it so difficult to determine a threshold limit value?

Risk analysis of food production with regard to allergens

Critical elements: staff, suppliers, raw material, equipment, processing,

consumer information, product development and documentation

What is required to obtain an exemption from labelling requirements?

The course is a mix of lectures and exercises, which are solved in groups.

The course focuses particularly on the introduction of Water Safety Plans in the urban water distribution networks for drinking water supply. You obtain a theoretical basis for analysing and controlling health hazards that may threaten the water quality in the networks.

Today governments and health authorities worldwide demand that water supply plants and supply companies delivering large quantities of water per year must implement quality assurance schemes - for example through the establishment of WSP.

The distribution networks is the most sensitive part of the water supply system and where risk assessment is most difficult.

COURSE TOPICS

Historical background and overall principles for WSP

Management and planning

Risk factors of particular relevance for the network

Risk assessment in the network

Quantitative microbial risk assessment

Training and hygienic behaviour

Risk management: Barriers, validation, monitoring, corrective actions, audit,
