Investing in technologyto improve performanceAt R&HA, we regularly invest in new technology to improve the way we work.

Our investments in technology are beingself-funded by the improvements we aremaking within the business.

Over the past two years, we have beenworking with our insurance partners on arobust risk management plan to mitigate theinsurance risks within our business.

This has resulted in us achieving a £5,000annual rebate from our insurer. We haveutilised this by investing in a suite of newiPads to help our internal audit teamstreamline their operations.

Continuously improving plant health andsafety is a major priority for R&HA and we’reconstantly on the lookout for new bestpractice ideas.

One of the biggest safety risks across allour sites is the use of MHE trucks. We’vestarted trialling the use of safety camerason the forks of reach trucks to reduceincidents of damage.

Launching this trial has had a significantimpact on the number of incidents and theaccidental damage being caused to rackingand pallets loaded with product.

The trial has been so successful that we arehoping to invest in more cameras, which willbe funded by offsetting against reducing thenumber of incidents.

We do a Cycle to Work scheme at all our sites, which enables us to calculate the emissionssaved by people coming to work on their bikesinstead of by car each day.

3iii staff schemelaunched to boost ideasand innovationA new scheme has been launched atR&HA to help boost staff engagement, generate new ideas and improve theproducts and services we offer tocustomers.

Your Ideas Scheme3iii Improvement, Ideas & Innovation

We have launched a new people managementsystem which will help to standardise ouroperations to ensure we can continue todevelop and deliver outstanding, customer-focused automotive logistics solutions.

The new system, which is currently beingrolled out across the operation, is aimed atcreating a more flexible, responsive and agileorganisational structure, which will betterfocus resource in the right areas and eliminateinefficiency. It will enhance our productioncapability and enable us to maintain our focuson continuous improvement within our owninternal processes, helping our customers toachieve better results.

Implementing these changes to our teamstructure will enable R&HA to continue tocreate smarter systems, embed betterprocesses and monitor achievementsagainst objectives, while providing strongerleadership and empowering our staff to findbetter ways of working.

R&HA Business Strategy Director JimmyHamilton said: “Our customers requirevisibility, clarity and trust in R&HA to get thejob done. The changes we are making willbetter bring this about by optimisingreporting lines and giving all our peoplegreater clarity surrounding their individualand collective responsibilities.”

So, when the opportunity came to trial somecutting edge wearable technology on behalfof one of our major customers, we weredelighted to pick up the gauntlet.

The R&HA team at MINI Plant Oxford havebeen trialling innovative new hands-free Pro Glove scanners.

Pro Glove is a wearable scanner that helpsto simplify ‘pick and scan’ processes, reduceerrors and improve employee well-being.

It allows users to effortlessly scan a fullrange of items in the warehouse whilekeeping their hands free.

It’s estimated that Pro Glove can speed upprocesses by 50%. Since starting the trial,we have noticed marked improvements inproductivity, health and safety and qualitystandards.

Uwe Winter, R&HA CEO, said: “Pro Glove notonly helps to speed up our pick and scanprocesses to make them more efficient, itmakes it easier for staff to do their jobsmore effectively, is more ergonomicallyfriendly and reduces the need for staff tocarry bulky handheld equipment, which caneasily get dropped or cause damage to ourproducts as they are being picked.”

Taking up the wearabletech gauntlet At R&HA, we’re always looking at newideas to achieve efficiencies, streamline our operations and findbetter ways of doing things to enableus to continue to provide a first-classservice to our customers.

New managerialstructure to enhanceservice to customersPlans are being implemented to realignthe managerial structure at R&HA’sOxford operation, to optimise reportinglines, boost problem-solving, providegreater clarity and accountability andultimately, enhance our service offeringto customers.

R&HA hits year-longpallet safety record Our body-in-white (BIW) assembly teampassed a major health and safetymilestone recently after going for awhole year of operation withoutdropping a single pallet on the day shift.

BIW is a core part of our operations at R&HAand the safety and robustness of ourprocess is critical to our automotivemanufacturing partners in helping them toconsolidate their global car programmes.

In the past year, the day shift moved468,072 pallets, so to not experience asingle spillage whilst moving that sheervolume of goods is a major achievement.

BIW is a complex process and ensuringproduction output is maintained is a hugechallenge.

Aubrey Leeson, R&HA’s HSE Manager, said:“Given the amount of pallets we handle everyyear in Body in White, it is a majorachievement to have zero pallet spillages ina whole year, so well done to the whole dayshift team.

“Safety will always be at the forefront of theBIW assembly process, as it’s a vitalcomponent in ensuring that we cancontinue to offer a quality-assured serviceto our customers.

“This comes only from having robustprocesses to create an environment inwhich our people can work to the best oftheir ability to deliver high-quality BIWsolutions.”

Minimising the impact ofthe UK’s exit from the EU

The date of the UK’s planned exit from the EU is imminent. While nobody cansay with any certainty what may happen immediately after the EU hasfinalised its position, R&HA has been busy putting plans in place to minimiseany potential impacts on our customers and our people.

R&HA is, and will remain, a business withstrong European links. The automotivelogistics sector in which we operate is spreadacross the EU and beyond, which means theUK’s exit will have a long-lasting impact, notjust on R&HA but on the industry at large.

R&HA has Authorised Economic Operationsstatus in relation to imports and exports, managing a large stockholding of products ina bonded warehouse. All our VDU operatorsare currently being trained in the latestCustoms processes. This will enable us toguarantee operational continuity, meaningdelays in the supply of parts to production willbe minimised after the UK leaves the EU.

We have also taken significant steps tominimise the impact on our team, to ensurewe can continue to provide the same level ofhigh-quality service that our customers expect.

Jimmy Hamilton, our Business StrategyDirector, said: “It remains to be seen whatimpact the UK’s exit from the EU may haveimmediately after we leave, but the steps wehave taken will help to ensure that the supply ofparts is not affected and any disruptions to ournormal operations will be kept to a minimum.

“As a people business, we know that many ofour employees have concerns or are worriedabout what the future may hold. We’ve acteddecisively over the past 12 months to providea regular flow of information, advice andguidance to our staff and agency workers, along with practical support.

“We remain committed to ensuring thatwhatever happens in the future, R&HA willcontinue to provide the same great service toour customers, providing leaner, smarterautomotive supply chain and logisticssolutions which help them to streamline theirown operations and eliminate inefficiency.”

Promotions on the table as GM heads Stateside Investing in our future leadersChanges to the way apprenticeships are funded have enabled R&HA to invest in ourworkforce and develop our next generation of business leaders.

A career with R&HA can unlock a world of opportunities. Investing in our team andhelping our people to develop their careers with us is a key part of our people strategy.

So, we’re delighted to wish long-serving MickCook, General Manager of our Oxfordoperation, a fond farewell as he heads toAmerica to take up a new role with our parentcompany, Rudolph Logistics Group.

Mick, who joined the R&HA team in 2006, isrelocating to Rudolph Logistics’ head office inSouth Carolina, one of the hotspots ofAmerican automobile manufacturing.

We’re also pleased to announce that JoshCadle has been promoted to the role ofGeneral Manager, as Mick’s successor.

Josh has been with R&HA for just over twoyears in the role of Senior Operations Manager.

Uwe Winter, R&HA CEO, said: “Over the years,Mick has become a key asset to our team andwill be truly missed, although he leaves withour best wishes.

“Josh, meanwhile, has proven already that he isa valuable member of the team who bringsfresh skills, experience and perspective.”

We are currently taking advantage of thesechanges by investing in ten apprenticesacross our organisation, to bring new skillsand ideas into the business, as well asrefining the talent we already have here.

Introduced in 2017, the Apprenticeship Levyapplies to all UK employers with an annualpayroll of more than £3m. These organisationspay 0.5% of their payroll into the scheme, which is topped up by a 10% payment fromGovernment. It enables us to draw downfunding from the Apprenticeship Levy to cover

the costs of recruiting and training newapprentices or upskilling existing staff throughapprenticeships.

Uwe Winter, CEO, said: “We’re big believers indeveloping our staff here at R&HA. This is nolip service. We are committed to giving ourpeople, at all levels of the business, therelevant skills they need to help drive thebusiness forward and ensure we can remain at the cutting edge of our extremely competitive marketplace.”

We have launched a new people management

The scheme aims to empower staff to comeup with ideas about how improvements canbe made to make everyday tasks easier, create a happier and cleaner workplace forthem and a better team environment.

Staff who submit ideas, which will beregularly reviewed, can earn points, whichcan be redeemed against a host of goodiesincluding Bluetooth speakers, Amazonvouchers, wine and sports equipment.

There will also be an annual award of £1,000for the best individual idea that has thebiggest impact in the workplace.

It is hoped that the scheme will improve notonly staff morale, but also R&HA’s overallservice offering to customers.

Uwe Winter, our CEO, said: “We’re a people-led business so it is absolutely crucial thatwe give all our staff ownership of the day-to-day running of our operations andencourage them to take responsibility forcoming up with new ideas.

“It’s also about rewarding innovative thinkingwithin the business and giving staffsomething back in return for their new ideaswhich have a positive impact on the way wedo things here at R&HA.”
