PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The affordable mid-range Fault Tolerant Server

NEC Express5800/(Rack Mount Model)

The NEC Express5800/320Lb fault tolerant server is intended for business-critical operations where the overriding priority is the highest achievable uptime in server performance. This Intel®-based server provides both significantly higher uptime than conventional servers and a less costly alternative-in a single box-than high-end/high-availability servers and clustering. Unlike clusters, which involve complex system design, extensive planning, lengthy installation, and active management, the NEC Express5800/320Lb is designed to be easy to set up, operate, and service, and hence, offers Simplified Availability. The NEC Express5800/ft series IA server is comprised of a hardware configuration that is designed to achieve fault tolerant availability. All hardware modules (CPU and PCI modules) within the system are duplicated and are equipped with ASIC circuits for continuous synchronized cross-checking of data processing results. This is to say that a failure in any of the modules is automatically detected and the failing module is immediately isolated from the system. The system can therefore continue normal operations using the remaining functioning module, in simple mode. This makes it possible for the NEC Express5800/ft series to achieve a fault tolerant level of availability. The NEC Express5800/320Lb has been positioned as the successor of the NEC Express5800/320La, a model which was introduced in the fourth quarter of 2001. The new model is released with bolstered functions and increased performance.

The Express5800/320Lb features Intel® XeonTM processors with an 2.40GHz clock rate. It employs a ServerWorks® ServerSet. III GC-LE chipset, with MPGA packaging, 512KB on-die advanced transfer cache, and a 400MHz front-side bus. It offers up to 3GB SDRAM memory per CPU module, with ECC protection. Redundant hot swappable, hard drive subsystem supports up to 164.5GB of mirrored storage. It provides two available PCI slots per PCI module, for expandability. Designed for easy installation and manageability, the NEC Express5800/320Lb comes standard with NEC EXPRESSBUILDER setup and configuration software for seamless installation of the operating system and NEC ESMPRO® management software (packaged on the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD). Integrated remote management capabilities provide remote control of server resources via LAN or modem connection. Designed to run demanding and business critical applications in space-conscious environments, the NEC Express5800/320Lb is the affordable mid-range Fault Tolerant Server your growing business can depend on.

TARGET AUDIENCES The NEC Express5800/320Lb server is intended for markets and applications where required uptime performance is beyond the capabilities of a general-purpose server. Prospective buyers include small to medium-size businesses, branch offices of companies, and IT departments. Other key candidates include back offices of retail organizations; police and fire departments; security companies; and consumer web operations for processing 24-7 online sales. Targeted prospects should encompass businesses dissatisfied with the uptime of existing servers in running business-critical applications as well as those already relying on arrays and clusters to achieve high availability. The NEC Express5800/320Lb is not intended for applications where processing needs mandate more than a two-way server, as is likely to be the case with data centers. Nor is it appropriate for applications requiring scalability or replacing Unix servers or clusters.

PROCESSING-FAILOVER FLOW ON THE NEC Express5800/320Lb

The NEC Express5800/320Lb offers high availability thanks to its dual-modular redundant (DMR) architecture. The server is comprised of two CPU and two PCI modules, operating in lockstep. There is constant cross-checking and synchronization of the modules, performed by the fault tolerant chipset. The components of the PCI module are also duplicated, and operate in sync with each other. If a component fails, or in the unlikely event of a module malfunction, the fault is detected and the malfunctioning component or module isolated immediately, while operation continues normally via the other component or module. Recovery time is not necessary, as it would be with a high-availability cluster configuration. And NEC ESMPRO○R

handles processing failover, network disconnections and other such tasks automatically, keeping your system constantly operational.
