FACIAL MASKS

Facial masks serve to cleanse the skin and treat problems. Depending upon the type of mask, it may also add nutrients, absorb impurities, exfoliate, invigorate or moisturize your skin. Your end result is a better appearance through an improved condition.

For those of you who have taken the plunge and had a luxuriously rich facial, you know what pampering is all about. As good as all of this might feel, the real key to a facial is

1) proper analysis of your skin,2) true “deep pore cleansing” under sterile conditions,3) massaging to improve blood flow, and4) masking.

Masking is simple. It will do wonders for complexions if you use the correct products.

Masks offer numerous challenges. The key is to find products that are light, elegant with high quality ingredients. Even people with mature skin that need moisturizers must be careful not to use products that can easily clog the pores that you are trying to keep clean.

A variety of masks exist for various needs ranging from moisturizing to acne control. You may want to use a mask only in certain areas, i.e., the T-zone. Many people have multiple skin conditions. You may use different masks, 1 every few days, to keep a good balance. Do not be afraid to use one type of mask for the T-zone and another mask for the cheeks, neck and temples which might be more sensitive. All masks should be kept away from contact with the eyes.

Moisturizing masks are intended to add moisture to the skin. This should be done with light, grease-less masks. Be aware of masks that contain heavy oil based products can clog the pores, exactly what you do not want to do. Typically used for normal to mature skin.

Nourishing Masks will add vitamins, nutrients and possibly plant extracts back into the skin. Typically used for normal to mature skin.

Cleansing Masks are either a wash off or peel off style. There is no way to determine which is better. It is simply a matter of with which you feel the most comfortable.

Many cleansing masks have a clay or oatmeal base. However, clay can be drying for many people. We would recommend a clay base for people with oily to acne-prone skin.

Drying Masks are designed for people with oily to acne-prone skin. These typically use agents such as clay, mud and sulfur to dry the pores and attempt to control the bacteria that can cause acne.

Other products that may be used to dry the skin include silica, resorcinol and zinc salts.

Exfoliating Masks help to remove dry, dead skin cells from the surface. Masks that contain oils for moisturizing as a key ingredient traditionally do not exfoliate well.

Look for a mask that is smooth to the touch. Any exfoliating terms such as “pumice” or “scrub” should be in a ground, pulverized, form so as not to scratch or harm the skin. Never scrub with a mask.

Indications • For the treatment of acne. Helps clear up acne blemishes and allows the skin to heal. Penetrates pores to

reduce the number of acne blemishes and helps prevent new blemishes from forming.

Directions • Empty 2 measuring tablespoons (enclosed) of powdered mask into a small mixing bowl. Add measuring

smooth. Small lumps are normal.• Apply directly to the face or body in a generous layer, smoothing as you apply. Leave on face to cure for
