Anchor selection Not all anchors are suitable for use in all base

materials. What follows is a suggested short list for

fixing systems suitable for specific base materials and

substrates. The final selection will depend on the load

requirement and preliminary, or suitability, tests:

Anchor installation All anchors should be installed strictly

in accordance with the manufacturer’s

recommendations.

n Correct hole diameter

n Holes should be free of dust and

debris – brush and pump (most important

for resin anchors)

n Correct setting tools must be used

(especially for Drop in anchors)

n Tighten to the recommended torque

according to manufacturers data

Anchor positioning All anchors should be installed with the

manufacturer’s recommendations for edge

and axial spacing. Anchor positioning in

brickwork needs additional consideration:

NASC TG4:11 Section 5.3 has guidance for

the positioning of fixings in brick walls which

should be observed.

Product TestingVJT has an in-house, test laboratory which carries

out bespoke suitability and proof-testing for specific

projects and products, and is UKAS accredited for site

tensile load testing of heavy-duty

anchors or fixings.

Toolbox TalksAs a leading distributor of fixings and tools to the UK’s

construction industry, VJT takes the health and safety

of its customers extremely seriously.

Toolbox talks are a simple and effective way to

communicate workplace hazards to be aware of,

explain and train on safe installation methods and,

ultimately, reduce workplace incidents.

The Building Structure The suitability of the building structure to

sustain the loads transferred from the scaffold

must always be checked by the designer.

On-Site Testing

See NASC TG4:11 Section 6Site tests can be required for two specific purposes:

n Preliminary tests: These tests are used to check

the suitability of a particular fixing in the base

material to help determine allowable loads.

n Proof tests: These tests are required to check the

quality of installation and should be carried out

on all projects.

n Site tests should be carried out by trained

competent personnel using a suitable calibrated

test meter.

Insert anchor to base of hole with a twisting action.

Clean hole by brushing & blowing, repeat sequence at least 4 times.

Starting from back, inject resin until hole is at least half full.

Deciding to add tool tethering to your workspace is vital for keeping both your workers and public as safe as possible.

Once you’ve made your choice, your next task is to ensure that your tool lanyards are fit for purpose and suitable for the

environment you are working in.

Third Party TestedEvery element of the NLG tool tethering system is tested and certified by an accredited UKAS test laboratory. All NLG tool lanyards

are tested with a 2:1 safety factor. That means all the lanyards, anchor points and tethers are all tested with double the weight of the

load rating.

Drop TestingNLG products also undergo dynamic drop testing to ensure they can cope in the real world. A dynamic drop test involves lifting the

tool to the full extent of the tool lanyard above the anchor point. This is where it’s dropped from. That tests the tool tether to its full

extension and makes sure that it can deal with the force of a dropped object coming to a sudden stop.

CE MarkingYour tool lanyards shows that they comply with the relevant EU safety, health and environmental requirements.

Serial NumbersYour tool lanyards offer traceability. We’re not just talking about traceability in the event that there’s a product fault and lanyards

need to be recalled. We’re talking about internal traceability too. Serial numbered tool lanyards allow you to assign tool tethering

equipment to particular employees. They can then be responsible for its condition and accountable for its maintenance.

The benefits of tethering from your wrist include:

n Low snagging risk because of reduced length of the tool lanyard

n Very compact solution, making it ideals for confined work areas

n Lightweight componentry means that it remains comfortable, even with prolonged use.

NLG does not recommend attaching any tool over 1.5kg to the wrist, as the force generated from heavier tools could cause strain to the user if dropped.

The benefits of tethering from a tool belt include:

n Versatile, heavy-duty system suitable for most tools

n Multiple tools can be tethered and holstered, available for immediate use

n Large range of tool lanyards allows for different configuration options

Only tether tools up to 2.5kg of the waist/tool belt. Heavier tools and objects should be attached to a secure, load-rated anchor point.
