Plant Story: Jeju Violet

Viola mandshurica, commonly known as Manchurian violet, is a perennial herb in the family Violaceae. It is native to eastern Asia, growing and distributed in Korea, Japan, China, northern part of Russia, and eastern Siberia. V. mandshurica is a medicinal herb with various pharmaceutical functions, including anti-inflammatory activities against bronchitis, rheumatism, skin eruptions, and eczema. In Traditional Korean Medicine, the extract is considered to be effective in promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis and in protecting the liver.

Camellia sinensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea. Two mainvarieties are cultivated worldwide; C. sinensis var. sinensis intemperate regions of Asia and var. assamica in tropics, mostly in India. Green tea, white tea, yellow tea, oolong tea, and black tea are all harvested leaves from the tea plant, C. sinensis, but the oxidation levels during the processing differ from each other. Centella asiatica is native to India and widely distributed in many parts of the world including Korea, China, Japan, South Africa, and Australia. It is also known as Hydrocotyleasiatica. In Korea, C. asiatica is commonly found on the fields and mountains in southern parts of Korea such as Jeju Island as it grows in warm and humid areas. It is also called tiger’s herb in India due to the fact that injured tigers roll on C. asiatica to heal their wounds. It has long been used in traditional herbal medicine including Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Traditional Korean Medicine.

It is in the family Polygonaceae, which is widely distributed in Korea, Japan and China.The dried root is used as a well-known traditional herbal medicine in China and officially listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It is also medicinally used in Korea and Japan as a folk medicine to treat diarrhoea, cancer, hypertension, dysmenorrhea, coughs and asthma. It has been reported that P. cuspidatum has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and anti-bacterial activities.

Plant Story: Baikal Skullcap

Scutellaria baicalensis is a perennial flowering herb distributed and widely used as a medicinal herb in Asian countries. The root is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. S. baicalensis has been used to treat infection, diarrhoea, jaundice and hepatitis. The therapeutic activities of skullcap root are due to the high concentration of flavonoids including baicalin, baicalein, wogonin and ganhuangenin.The total content of flavonoids in the roots of wild skullcap varies from 15-20% of the dry weight. Each major flavonoid was investigated to prove its pharmacological effects. Studies showed that all the major flavonoids exhibited significant anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenging activities while wogonin was superior to all the other flavonoids in anti-inflammatory activity.
