Plant Story: Jeju Violet
Viola mandshurica, commonly known as Manchurian violet, is a perennial herb in the family Violaceae. It is native to eastern Asia, growing and distributed in Korea, Japan, China, northern part of Russia, and eastern Siberia. V. mandshurica is a medicinal herb with various pharmaceutical functions, including anti-inflammatory activities against bronchitis, rheumatism, skin eruptions, and eczema. In Traditional Korean Medicine, the extract is considered to be effective in promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis and in protecting the liver.

Plant Story: Licorice
Glycyrrhiza uralensis is commonly called licorice or liquorice, of which the root is valued for its medicinal qualities. Due to the distinctive sweet flavor, it is used in several industries to make instant tea, confections, tobacco, and toothpaste, especially in Europe and the Americas. Licorice is referred to as the ‘indispensable stuff’ in Korea because it is employed in most traditional medicine prescriptions for giving a sweet aftertaste. Licorice root is one of the most common herbal ingredients in cosmetics with favorable properties for the skin. On the skin, it has been well known for its skin brightening effects along with soothing and calming effects. In addition, wide inhibitory activities against inflammation, oxidation, and several microbial activity have been demonstrated.

Plant Story: Green Tea
Camellia sinensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea. Two mainvarieties are cultivated worldwide; C. sinensis var. sinensis intemperate regions of Asia and var. assamica in tropics, mostly in India. Green tea, white tea, yellow tea, oolong tea, and black tea are all harvested leaves from the tea plant, C. sinensis, but the oxidation levels during the processing differ from each other. Together with its well-known properties, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, wound healing activity has been revealed in fibroblast cells and animal models, whichincludes complex pathophysiological processes, such as inflammation, angiogenesis and collagen deposition.

Plant Story: Asiatic Pennywort
Centella asiatica is native to India and widely distributed in many parts of the world including Korea, China, Japan, South Africa, and Australia. It is also known as Hydrocotyleasiatica. In Korea, C. asiatica is commonly found on the fields and mountains in southern parts of Korea such as Jeju Island as it grows in warm and humid areas. It is also called tiger’s herb in India due to the fact that injured tigers roll on C. asiatica to heal their wounds. It has long been used in traditional herbal medicine including Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Traditional Korean Medicine.

Plant Story: Baikal Skullcap
Scutellaria baicalensis is a perennial flowering herb distributed and widely used as a medicinal herb in Asian countries. The root is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. S. baicalensis has been used to treat infection, diarrhoea, jaundice and hepatitis. The therapeutic activities of skullcap root are due to the high concentration of flavonoids including baicalin, baicalein, wogonin and ganhuangenin. The total content of flavonoids in the roots of wild skullcap varies from 15-20% of the dry weight. Each major flavonoid was investigated to prove its pharmacological effects. Studies showed that all the major flavonoids exhibited significant anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenging activities while wogonin was superior to all the other flavonoids in anti-inflammatory activity.

What is Skin Inflammation?
Inflammation is part of the complex immunological responses to a wide range of harmful stimuli including skin injury, tissue necrosis, infection, and irritants. The immune system is responsible for protecting our body from the harmful stimuli and of maintaining homeostasis. Like any other part of the body, the skin can be involved in immune responses. Inflammation in the skin often causes a rash to form. It’s a response from the immune system to conditions such as bacterial/viral/fungal infections, allergic reactions, heat, and sunlight. The symptoms of skin inflammation are rash, skin redness, blisters or pimples, warmth, and thickening of the skin in the affected area.
