The rotor

Inalltheprocessesperformedinparticularlycritical environments and with equally difficultworkcycles,motorsoperateinheavyconditions.Inparticular,rotorscanbesubjectedtovibrationsthatreducetheirusefullife.TherotorsofABBmotorsaremade of materials that can withstand these conditions,ensuringlowvibrationlevelsthrougha solid structure and the perfect balancing ofeachcomponent.Therotorshaftisbuiltto meet the various needs deriving from the specificworkcyclesandfromtherelatedoperatingconditions,whereastherotoritselfis dynamically balanced at the maximum operating speed. Eachweldisperformedaccordingtorigorousmethodsandundergoesseveralqualitychecks,while windings are made following criteria thatminimizevibrations:arigidwrappingalsoprevents windings from being exposed to distorting centrifugal forces.

The stator

Thestatorhasbeendesignedandbuilt,startingfromwelds,soastoobtainacompactanduniformsystem,ensuringlongoperatinglife,eveninparticularlydifficultconditions,duetospecialradialducts that guarantee an appropriate and optimal ventilation.Thelaminationisinsulatedfromthestator core by means of a heat-resistant inorganicresin(ClassF),whilewindingsand connections are insulated by means of mica-based tapes.

Oncethewindingiscomplete,thewholestator undergoes a special process named VPI(VacuumPressureImpregnation),formingasingleblockthatkeepsitsrigidityover the long machine life. Wiringissimplifiedbytheterminalboxesdesignedtomakewireconnectioneasierand to reduce installation time.

The bearings

Bearings are an essential element for motor operation.TheABBbearingdesignensureslong operating life and easy maintenance. Accordingtothetypeofmotor(fromsizetothevariousoperatingcharacteristics),bearings are available in various types as well asinthecylindrical,self-aligningorsleeveversion.Theantifrictionbearingsaredesignedfora100,000-hourworkinglifeandtheirstructureminimizesnoiselevelandpreventsdust penetration.

Advanced slip ring unit Woundrotormotorscanbesuppliedwith:•permanentcontactbrushes,or•brush-liftinggear.Inbothcases,theslipringsareenclosedinahousing,attheN-end,separatefromthemotorhousing.Thisarrangementprovidesforeasyaccessandmaintenance.Itkeepscarbon dust out of the motor and offers the possibility of having different enclosures and cooling methods for the slip ring housing.

Slip rings with permanent contact brushesTheslipringsaremanufacturedfromhighlycorrosion-resistantCu-Sn-Nialloy,andthey are helical grooved as standard.

Slip rings with brush-lifting gearTheslipringsaremanufacturedfromstainlesssteelandhaveasmooth,non-grooved surface. After the motor has achievedfullspeed,thebrush-liftingandslipringshort-circuitinggear(BLG)firstshort-circuits the rotor winding and then raises the brushes from the slip rings.

Perfect cooling Theguaranteeofsafetechnology.

Theinternalaircirculationisprovidedbya shaft mounted fan or a separate blower. Inair-to-aircooledmotors,theexternalcooling air is circulated by a shaft mounted fanoraseparateblower.Thestandardversions are always selfventilated.

Inweatherprotectedmotors,thecoolingair is drawn through the motor by a shaftmountedfan.Protectionisprovidedbyaweatherproof cover which also serves as asilencer.

Uniform and efficient cooling of the statoris ensured by radial air ducts in the statorcore and spacers between the coil ends.

Stator frame construction is designed to facilitate efficient cooling air flow.

Slip ring units with permanent contact slipring brushes are equipped with a similar heatexchanger or protective cover as that of themotor. A shaft mounted fan circulates coolingairthroughtheslipringunit,filter,anduppercover.Thiscoolingsystemisisolatedfromthatofthemotor,thusprovidingeasymaintenance and inspection.

Easy wiring Thesimplicityofeffectivetechnology.

Thestandardterminalboxisavailablewithgenerous space for easy cable connection.Othertypesofconnectionboxescanbeprovided on request.
