Location data

Location information is based on address data captured by the Settlement Database (SDB). This data is transferred to the SRF, where it can be reported on via various geographical groupings. These are:

State; Statistical Division; Statistical Sub-Division; Statistical Local Area; Local Government Area; and Metro/Regional.

Each of these geographical groupings is explained in the S RF D a ta Dicti ona r y .

It should be noted that although efforts are made to keep up to date address information for settlers recorded in the SDB, not all address data can be considered as current. Therefore, location based data should be interpreted with care.

Location Data StructureLocation data in the SDB is based on the 2011 Australian Standard Geographic Classifications (ASGC) structure, however, differs slightly because the SRF location data is built up from postcodes rather than mesh blocks.

It should be noted that the building of statistical areas from postcode is somewhat problematic. This is because some postcodes will fall into more than one statistical area. The statistical area which receives the highest percentage of a postcode (according to the 2 011 Au s t r a li an S t a tistic al G eo gr aphy S t a nda r d ( AS G S ) c o rr e s po n den c e s ) will, in the SRF, receive all the data for that postcode.

More information about the 2011 ASGC as well as correspondence files can be found at: h tt p : //ww w . ab s. g o v . au / g eo gr aphy

Location Criteria and Filters

Criteria

If you select the LGA of residence (Name) Criterion, then your report output will display and give a figure for each individual local government area (LGA) in this listing.

In the SRF there are six criteria available for location data. These are:

LGA of Residence (Name) Metro/Regional (place of res) SLA of Residence (name) State of Residence Statistical Division Statistical Sub-Division (name)

Filters

Filters work differently to criteria; they allow you to narrow down your report data. If you were only interested in settlers currently residing in a specific LGA you could use the Place of Residence (State, LGA) filter to narrow down your data. When you select a filter you will be presented with the list of fields available for that filter. Some filters have more than one layer, such as the Place of Residence (State, LGA) filter. This means that you begin by selecting field/s from the top most layer and can narrow your search down to one of the lower levels if you wish.

In the SRF there are three filters for location data. These are:

Place of Residence (State, LGA) Place of Residence (State, SD, SSD, SLA); and Metro/Regional

The Place of Residence (State, LGA) filter has more than one layer. Its structure can is defined as:

State to; Local Government Area (LGA)

The Place of Residence (State, SD, SSD, SLA) has more than one layer. Its structure is defined as:

State to; Statistical Division (SD) to; Statistical Sub-Division (SSD) to; Statistical Local Area (SLA)

More information about each of the location criteria and filter can be found in the S RF D a ta Dicti ona r y .

Arrival Date, Visa Grant Date & Settlement Date

The SRF allows reports to be generated by either arrival date or grant date.

Arrival Date

Reports generated by arrival date will include only those settlers whose recorded arrival date falls within the selected Date Range.

Visa Grant Date

Reports generated by visa grant date will only include those settlers whose recorded visa grant date is within the selected Date Range.

Settlement Date (Using Arrival Date and Visa Grant Date together)

To get a more accurate count of settlers in a specific location, it is recommended to use both arrival date and visa grant date. In order to do this, two reports must be run. The first report selects arrival date for visas which were granted offshore (i.e. outside of Australia) and the second report selects grant date for visas which were granted onshore (i.e. in Australia).

For more detailed instructions on how to run these two reports, please refer to the S e ttl em en t Da te T ip Sh ee t.on 2 (08/13)

Location Data: Tips and Tricks

When generating a report by location, there are several things to remember:

SRF data will always show how many settlers are c u rr e n tly residing in the specified location. Care should be taken when interpreting location data used in conjunction with specific date ranges as location data is always current, despite the specific date range.

Some settlers will have no recorded address information and therefore may be left out of some counts.

Some postcodes are spread across more than one geographical area. Where this is the case, the statistical area which receives the highest percentage of a postcode will, in the SRF, receive all the data for that postcode.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides online correspondence files which have been used to map postcode to SLA and LGA in the SRF. These are available here: 2 0 11 Au st r a li an S t a tistic al G eo gr aphy S t a n da r d ( A S G S ) c o rr e s p on d en c e s .
