Wanted: Exceptional
Loddon Shire People
Several, in fact- and committees and volunteer managers…
For Volunteer Week in May 18- 22, Loddon Shire Council would love to do some things that acknowledge the amazing volunteers we have here in the Loddon Shire, so they are reaching out to the people who know where to find these amazing community members.
The Loddon Shire Council wants to encourage you to nominate someone, or a committee who you think contributes in an amazing way, in several categories:
Volunteers doing things that deserve recognition – these people can be long term volunteers, short term volunteers, volunteers who have contributed to their community in some way that deserves a thank you, and recognition.
Volunteer based committees or groups – these committees or groups contribute to their communities in a way that supports and nurtures community, and are actively working to progress their communities.
Volunteer Managers- these people manage volunteers in some way, either as a paid staff member or a volunteer themselves- Tell us about your experience with a Volunteer manager who deserves recognition because of the way they manage and support their Volunteers.
Young people who volunteer – Young people are the future of Loddon, and we would love to acknowledge their Volunteer contribution.
Sue Devereaux at the council needs to get this finalised by the 16th of April. She will need names by the 27th March to send out information forms to you so you can tell us how amazing your nominee is! You can let her know who these people are by email, and she will send you out an information form that you can fill in and send back – she’ll do the rest!
Sue is also undertaking a video record of volunteers – if you know of someone who has a story about their volunteering activities, and would be ok with a short (up to 5 minute) video interview that would be shared on the Loddon shire Volunteer page, please get in touch.
If you have a suggestion of an activity for Volunteer Week, she’d love to hear about that as well…
To nominate a volunteer or if you have any questions please contact Sue Devereaux on:

Dear friends of Pyramid Hill
Thank you for your newsy letters. You are all so busy just like me, via the Press. My big news is that we had a small book launch on Saturday 22nd with 23 people on the 2nd floor of the hostel the book was big 450 pages called “Ups and Downs of Pyramid Hill & District 1930-1939. A Social history of P H & Districts as taken from the PH Advertiser. We were so lucky to have A J Williams as editor. Fr Bob Matthews, a resident was MC and Sr Angela Bayliss from our Lady of Sion school over the road launched the book as she was born in PH on March 21 1940 to Wilfred and Irene nee Gray. Val Blacker nee Daws a resident responded, Val’s father was the Methodist minister in PH during the 1930’s. There are only 3 books printed at Officeworks $60 each and I have sent the USB stick to Pyramid Historical Society to put in for a grant and sell it if there are any members in working order. I had a wonderful day with all my children, 2
grandies and one grand DIL. Regards Margaret W L-R Sr Angela Bayliss, Margaret Williamson, Val Blacker nee Daws.

The Mologa and District Landcare Group would like to invite you to the 100-year celebration of our WW1 Memorial in Mologa on ANZAC Day the 25th April 2020 at 8 am.
We have restored the memorial surrounds to give access to people with wheelchairs and walkers. We have written two booklets bout the soldiers on the memorial “Faces to Names” and “100 years WW1 Memorial”.
The first booklet has the pictures and description of our soldiers plus part of their war history. The second booklet has the history of the war memorial, from planning, unveiling, the fight to keep the memorial in Mologa, and then the restoration of the memorial ground.
Plaques were installed on the sides of the memorial with the pictures of our soldiers.
Four Lone Pine trees were planted for WW1, WW2 and all wars after them and one for the history of the Lone Pine.
We always try to educate people and find some history or letters from the Front.
A program of the ANZAC Day celebration is accompanying this invitation.
Thank you

Women On Farms Gathering Inglewood will be this year’s host for the annual Women on Farms Gathering (WOFG) from 27 to 29 March. Keynote speakers will focus on the theme of ‘Revitalised’ with many participants directly affected by the recent fires. For over thirty years, WOFG has brought women together to share ideas and build networks, while promoting the essential role that women play in Australia’s agricultural sector and in rural communities. Over time, the focus has shifted to address the changing needs of farming women with an emphasis on education and training, the value of networking as well as strategies to overcome isolation. This year’s event will offer a great opportunity to showcase the Loddon Valley with activities including visits to our historic towns, agricultural enterprises and the natural landscape, as well as artistic and cultural experiences. To find out more about WOFG and to book tickets visit www.wofg2020.org.au.
Be Part Of The Conversation About Land, Water And Biodiversity A series of roundtable sessions will take place in March to encourage community input into the renewal of the Catchment Management Authority’s 2021-2027 Regional Catchment Strategy and DELWP’s Regional Biodiversity Response Planning. The involvement of locals regarding what they value about land, water and biodiversity will help guide the process of updating these documents. Sessions in our local area include Thursday 19 March at Kerang Memorial Hall, Tuesday 24 March at Charlton Memorial Hall and Thursday 26 March at the Inglewood Football Pavilion. Sessions run from 6pm to 8.30pm. To book a place, go to www.nccma.vic.gov.au/media-events/events.
Works Around The Shire Works will begin shortly to refresh the fence and memorial gates at the Soldiers’ Memorial Park in Wedderburn. The gates will be removed while work is undertaken. Both fence and gates will be sandblasted and repainted in a close approximation to the current colour. Repairs to the fence and render will also be undertaken. Work is expected to take about two weeks. Works on footpaths are now complete in Boort, while footpath projects are currently underway in Inglewood, Wedderburn and Bridgewater. I am pleased to say that safety upgrade work on the Old Inglewood Reservoir is scheduled to commence in the middle of March. As part of Council’s commitment to enhance the sustainability and liveability of our Shire, a program has been undertaken to install 130kW solar panels at 13 high-use Council buildings. In addition, work has commenced to upgrade LED light installations at 19 Council buildings. In other works; the tender has been awarded for the Pyramid Hill culvert replacement work, on-ground works are scheduled to commence in April for the Sloans Bridge project and a variety of reseal work is taking place around the Shire.
March Loddon Bulletin The March edition of the Loddon Bulletin is arriving in letterboxes throughout the Shire this week. The Bulletin provides information and news that is relevant to all residents and is a great source of useful dates and contacts. This issue celebrates our Australia Day events and highlights the Visitor Information Centre. There are now so many easy ways to keep up with news and events in our region by simply following us on one of our social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and our new-look website. You will find all the links on our website https://www.loddon.vic.gov.au/Home. If you need a copy of the Bulletin, you can pick one up from our offices or download a copy from our website https://www.loddon.vic.gov.au/News-and-public-notices/Loddon-Bulletins.
Award For Local Business Congratulations Miller’s Ag Supplies of Pyramid Hill. This family-owned business has not only been named Australian Independent Rural Retailers (AIRR) Member of the Year for Victoria and Tasmania but also took out the AIRR Business Development Award for 2020.
Welcome New Citizens Prior to this week’s Council Meeting, I had the pleasure of conducting a citizenship ceremony at the Council Chambers. Tony Conti formalised his love of Australia when he took the pledge, after living in Australia for over 50 years. Tony moved to Australia from Italy with his parents when he was a child. David and Barbara Thomas were drawn to Australia from Great Britain to be near their children and grandchildren. Since living in the area, they have both been active in the local community and enjoy travelling throughout Australia. Welcome Tony, David and Barbara as new citizens and thank you for choosing to make Australia and the Loddon Shire your home.

Victorian Youth Week To Be Celebrated Again
Local youth will be front and centre this April 3rd to 12th when Victorian Youth Week kicks off.
Northern District Community Health (NDCH) have once again received state government funding and will partner with students from the five local Secondary Schools in Gannawarra and Loddon Shires to roll out a range of youth led initiatives. “Young people are our future residents, leaders, families, workforce and volunteers,” NDCH CEO Mandy Hutchinson said. “Victorian Youth Week gives the community as a whole, the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge our local young people”. Students will design and run events, activities and workshops themselves, with NDCH’s Youth Health Promotion Worker, Matt Allan there to support them. Students gain valuable skills in event management and self-confidence as they organize the events, which can be enjoyed by their peers. Events will vary across the region, depending on youth interests and ideas. Local youth are encouraged to showcase their unique skills and talents during Victorian Youth Week. Last year’s successful and engaging events included musical performances, sporting games, arts and crafts workshops, and food stalls. New and innovative ideas are encouraged this year. Over 100 events are planned during Victorian Youth Week across regional and metro Victoria this year. Additional youth events will take place in the Gannawarra Shire including Skate Workshops and ‘Art in the Park’, a collaborative art project between young people and professional artists. To keep up to date on all youth events, follow NDCH FReeZA on Facebook. If young people have any ideas for Victorian Youth Week they would like to discuss further with our Youth Health Promotion Worker, Matt Allan please contact NDCH on (03) 5451 0200. All events are delivered in a safe and inclusive environment that is alcohol, drug and smoke-free. Media Enquiries Matthew Allan, NDCH Youth Health Promotion Worker on (03) 5451 0200.

A Step Back In Time November 8 1944 Reports of an earth tremor in and around the metropolitan area just after midnight on Friday morning were reported. Geologists connect the tremor with a fault in the earth's strata parallel with the Mornington Peninsula. Last June there was an earth tremor felt at Pyramid Hill and Boort, and we reported the happening to the Melbourne Observatory. The following reply came from Professor S. Hills, of the Geology School, The University of Melbourne:—"Your letter to Captain Warren was sent on to the Government Astronomer, who referred it to me. I imagine, although we have no very definite evidence, that your suggestion about a fault or faults in the Boort-Pyramid Hill district is probably correct. I think, myself, there is a N.-S. fault along the edge of the high Mallee country at Boort, and it may well be that there is a similar fault or faults in the Pyramid Hill district along the western edge of the Terricks Range. The plain between these two faults is low-lying and, so far as I am aware, bedrock does not appear through the alluvium in it, so that one may suggest this block has, sunk down relative to the higher land on either side. Some of the minor rumblings and bubblings (heard at Bald Rock) may be due to the settlement and compaction of the thick alluvial deposits in this fault trough rather than to actual movements of the faults themselves." While on the subject of geology, how many of our readers are aware of the near proximity of an extinct volcano to Pyramid Hill ? The situation is at Woodstock West, not very many miles from Bridgewater. First evidences of it as you travel the road southward from Bridgewater east of the Loddon towards Newbridge are the small lumps of honeycombed rock in the paddocks nearby. The crater of the volcano is very shallow but can be easily discerned. Within the vicinity the erupted flakes of rock are exceedingly light and as holey as a sponge. Further to the south, 30 miles or so, there is a noted extinct volcano, Mt. Franklin, a, few miles from Daylesford. Anyone motoring from these parts to Daylesford cannot fail to notice the direction post to the crater near Franklinford. It is only a short distance to the mount, and a track leads to the edge of the crater which is deep and circular and well worth inspecting. From the top of the mount a wonderful panoramic view rewards the traveller.

‘We should all throw away our TV sets’ - Year 10 Persuasive Writing
.. One of the reasons why people choose to have a TV is to know the worlds news. But
the media right now is ruthless and consistently negative. By watching TV, you are
causing more harm than good. After you turn the TV on and see what’s happened lately
you are left with sadness and despair, you lose hope. Even if you still wanted to
know the local news you can choose to listen on the radio which is less expensive and
you won’t be stuck to a screen, you will have the ability to tune in and out unlike
watching a TV. By throwing out your television your day will be filled with less of
the horrors of todays humanity and you will be left with a more positive and peaceful
life. Extract taken from the work of Imogen Broad
..Children who watch too much television turn out as bad-behaved, antisocial children. A study at news.com.au states
that “too much TV as a toddler can make kids grow into bullied social misfits who are violent and antisocial by the
age of 13”. Toddlerhood is a critical time to learn social skills such as sharing or respecting, children also need
interactive play to develop healthy behaviours, but televisions are restricting what these children can and cannot
accomplish. The website states that the brain is wired for live interaction, which children are unable to get from
television. The more hours a day spent watching television not only effects people socially, but also physically.

Our 2020 Mates Community
Program was launched on
Friday night at the College
Mates mentors and mentees
enjoyed their time together as
they shared an evening meal
and interacted through a variety
of games that were hosted by
the Year 9/10 students.
A highlight of the night was
three mentees interviewing
their mentors regarding career
pathways. All had very
different stories. The advice
that the mentors gave back to
themselves at the age of 15 was
also a very powerful moment.
Pyramid Hill College wish to
thank our community mentors
who are so generous with their
time.

Whispers From The Green ...
The Bowls Season is now wearing down with Pennant all wound up for our Club. Despite this, there is still plenty to do, what with tournaments to be held and supported, and functions to be organized and conducted.
The 60 and over guys, Ray, John, Bill and Joe had a good day out at Cohuna last week – it was not a great day out, but a very good day out. After losing their first game by just one shot, they went on to win both of their other games, to finish just a few feathers on the drum sticks short of snaring another dead chook. Oh, so close! There are just two more chances left in the Season. Good luck, guys!
The Final’s Campaign:
Saturday’s Division 2 team made it into the first Semi-final lauding it over Cohuna for that all important fourth spot by just 1 point. On Saturday we travelled to Barham Services knowing very well that we were going to confront some extremely formidable opponents in Cohuna Golf Navy. It was always going to be an up-hill battle but we went prepared to give it our best shot. We had nothing to lose – except the match, of course, and we did lose that –losing well but with style. At the mid-way, afternoon tea break we were within the ball park – sort of holding our own and at least causing our opponents to think hard. The greens were running fast, which so often seems to be our demise, but the weather conditions were nigh on perfect. Full points got to the rink comprised of Marie S., Jan, Ted and Graham. All day they stayed within striking distance of their opponents, never letting them get too far away. Their final score 19-23 left them just 4 shots short of a win. Ian, Ray, Marie N. and Bill found the consistency of their opponents too demanding after the break, with the opposing third and skip pulling off some cracking heart-breaking deliveries. They were all too good to the tune of 13 shots – which is not disgraceful but still disappointing as we let our opponents and the playing conditions beat us. Lionel, Kate, Allan and Jean were also out-bowled. They had some great bowls themselves, but again, consistent accuracy was the key factor. They lost 17-36. The overall tally, 55-91 in favour of Cohuna Golf Navy, could leave a nasty taste, but we did our best and are proud that we even made the finals at all.
Special thanks must be given to Joe and Nola who were the emergencies on the day and still travelled all the way to Barham regardless of having to sit on the sidelines. A number of members dines at the Barham Services Club following the match, as a token of thanks for their Sponsorship support.
Next Saturday will see the Preliminary Finals played at Leitchville. In Division 1, Barham Sports play Cohuna Golf. In Division 2, Kerang play Cohuna Golf Navy. In Division 3, Barham Services play Kerang Blue. Kerang Division 1, Cohuna Golf White Divi-sion 2, and Wakool Division 3 won their way straight into the Grand-final.
Wednesday Pennant: The first round of the Mid-week pennant finals was staged at Kerang last Wednesday. The obligatory wind was gusty and a little chilly for both players and spectators. Results saw Cohuna Golf defeat Barham Services and Cohuna defeat Barham Sports in Division 1. In Division 2, Barham Sports defeated Cohuna Golf, and Cohuna defeated Leitchville. Play for the Preliminary final next week is at Cohuna, with the grand-final, scheduled for the following week, to be played at Leitchville. Good luck to all players.
Barefoot Bowls: Instead of the usual sequence of nights, this year we are running a “Barefoot Bonanza One Night Stand”. Wednes-day 11th, March is the scheduled night. Barefoot bowlers are invited to enter their names with either Lionel or Marie N. Two non-bowlers will be paired with a bowling Mem-ber, although some negotiations may be listened to and acceded. A bbq will be availa-ble from 6:00pm, with the games starting at 7:00pm. $10 entry fee. Entries must be in by this Saturday, 7th March.
A Major Fund Raising Event has been planned for Friday, 20th March. We are challenging anyone and everyone to some trivial knowledge and test of skill. “Trivia with a Twist” is the name of the game. We have acquired the services of a professional team from Ballarat to lead the night, and they ensure us that we do not have to be Einstein to experience a good night of fun. Cost is $15 per head, but bring along a handful of gold coins to join in some of the tests of skill or luck. A yummy supper is guaranteed. Don’t miss out. Book now for the Friday evening, 20th March: 7:30 start, at the Bowling Club. Bookings can be made with Lionel, Marie S., Marie N. or Bill. Groups of eight are preferred but not essential.
Social Night at the Vic Hotel: Wednesday, 18th March, will be our next dinner at the hotel and our last opportunity to do this while the hotel is operating under the realm of Dave and Deb. So let’s muster the troops and make this a great night, showing our appreciation of the tremendous support Dave and Debbie have afforded the PHBC over many years.
