Royal Starfish Award It’s always special to recognize those who give of themselves so much they are considered to be ROYAL STARFISH and Beach Preservationists of the year. We can never say enough about the good these people do, and the selfless approach to pro-tecting and preserving the beach. This year marks the 10th year a couple of awe-some people have served this way, 9 of those years on the BPS Advisory Board and another [this] year of just stepping up and keeping things going as new folks came in. We are recognizing TWO BEACH PRESERVATIONISTS OF THE DECADE this year. Our first recipient was appointed to the Board in 2010. She was formerly a teacher and consultant to schools on teaching the blind and visually im-paired. You know her as the editor of our Beach Preserver newsletter, the organizer of food service for the fundraiser for many years, and the painter of spectacular rain barrels! [Everybody needs at least one!]. She retired from the Board after 9 years, but that was last year. Please congratulate a 10-year leader in Beach Preservation: Billie Le-Tendre! Our 2nd Beach Preservationist of the Decade is an avid birder, and that called her away from the award presentation! She’s a Wisconsin native with a history of biology teaching and medical library work. She worked nearly 30 years for the American Board of Pediatrics. You rarely see her face but her work is everywhere, from the filled doggie boxes to the fundraiser table tags to the bright logo gear that Beach Lovers wear. You got email from her about our fundraiser for nine years, and we STILL can’t replace her as Secretary! So we recognize another faithful servant of the beach, Board member for 9 years and still stepping up to

print the wine and auction programs, find the supplies for events, and store the tent and tables: Diane Butzin!

Thanks, Billie and Diane, for a decade of service to the beach and support of BPS activities and people. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Beach Cleanup with Surfrider Results are in from the Pre-season Beach Cleanup conducted collab-oratively between Cape Fear Surfrider and BPS! In an efficient cleanup on the afternoon of May 4th, 33 volunteers collected 146 pounds of trash, including 468 cigarette butts [always the top find -- yuck]! Thanks to Eileen Keates and all the volunteers who made the beach better for our use this summer. Let's keep it that way!

Our Beach Today During the past winter and spring, the sands of Oak Island con-tinued their normal shifts. Sometimes sand came in and some-times it went out. Sand from the Lockwood Folly Dredging pro-ject was placed near the west end of the island. Some people in other areas were granted permits due to the storm damage and paid contractors to spread sand in front of their lots. This coming winter more sand will be made available in some areas thanks to FEMA and state grants as well as through other fund-ing sources.

New BPS Banner Look for our new banner with our mis-sion statement at all of our events. We will attend the Oak Island Farmers Mar-ket on June 17, July 8, and July 29 be-tween 8am and 1pm as well as being at other events throughout the year.

Earth Day 2019

About 200 guests (50% kids, 50% adults) and 11 BPS helpers par-ticipated in Earth Day activities. These included discussing Oak Island’s animals, identifying ones that are endangered, and citing ways to protect their habitat. Children received activity packets, signed the BPS banner after pledging to be a Beach Lover and made necklaces and bracelets to carry home.

Beach Ambassador Update Annual training for 20 returning and 14 new volun-teers took place on April 11. Beach patrolling began May 4. All beach patrol segments will be covered. This year Ambassadors will pay special attention to holes dug on the beach, educating visitors and resi-dents of the safety hazards associated with those that are large and abandoned. We are excited and are looking forward to another successful year. We hope to meet many new friends on the beach.
