More than 3,000 years ago the Ma-yas considered aloe vera, “the secret fountain of youth”. Around 2,000 years later Cleopatra and

Nefertiti also used the juice from the aloe vera plant for their beauty regimes. The Greeks used this miraculous plant to treat stings, sunburns and stomachaches. When Werner Telwest arri-ved on Mallorca 16 years ago, he had no idea about the rich history surrounding aloe vera. Nowadays, he is the owner of the island’s only aloe vera farm, and his journey has made him somewhat of an expert on the matter.

Werner owned a screen-recycling firm in North Germany. After selling the firm in 1998, Werner and his wife Aline enjoyed many holidays on Ma-llorca. By March that same year they had bought a 40-hectare estate in Santa Margalida, near Artà.“We had always wanted a big estate; in Germany we used to have animals: horses, sheep, cows… So we decided to live in the middle of nature,”says Werner while sipping his morning juice consisting of freshly pressed orange juice, a little bit of bana-na, and (of course) aloe vera juice.Werner spent the early days relaxing and settling

Nefertitis utilizaban el extracto del aloe para sus cuidados de belleza. Los griegos solían tra-tar picores, quemaduras solares y dolores de estómago con esta milagrosa planta. Hace 16 años, cuando Werner Telwest llegó a Mallorca, no había escuchado ninguna de estas historias sobre el aloe. Hoy no sólo es dueño de la única granja de aloe vera en la isla, sino que además se ha convertido en un experto en el tema.

En su ciudad de origen, en el norte de Alemania, Werner Telwest tenía una fábrica de reciclaje de pantallas. En 1998, tras vender la empresa, Werner y su mujer, Aline, pasaron sus primeras vacaciones en Mallorca y, poco después, en marzo del mismo año, ya habían comprado una finca de 40 hectáreas en Santa Margalida, cerca de Artá. “Siempre quisimos tener una finca grande; en Ale-mania teníamos animales: caballos, ovejas, vacas… Así que decidimos vivir en plena naturaleza”, rela-ta Werner mientras bebe pequeños sorbos de su zumo matinal: naranja recién exprimida, un poco

Vor 16 Jahren, als Werner Telwest in Mallorca landete, kannte er keine die-ser Geschichten über Aloe. Heute ist er nicht nur der Besitzer der einzigen Aloe Vera Farm auf der Insel, sondern ein Experte im Bereich Aloe Vera geworden.

In seiner Geburtstadt in Norddeuschland hatte Wer-ner Telwest eine Recycling-Firma für Bildschirme. 1998 verbrachten Werner und seine Frau Aline ihren ersten Urlaub auf Mallorca, nachdem er sein Unter-nehmen verkauft hatte. Kurze Zeit danach, im März desselben Jahres, hatten sie schon ein 40-Hektar-Grundstück in Santa Margalida, in der Nähe von Artá erworben.„Wir haben immer von einem grossen Grunds-tück geträumt; in Deutschland hatten wir Pferde, Schafe und Kühe, also beschlossen wir, auch zukünftig mitten in der Natur zu leben”, berichtet

in to his new island life, until one night he had a dream that his 40-hectare estate was covered by aloe vera plants. The following morning he sat in front of his wife and enthusiastically announced, “I’ve got it. We are going to plant aloe vera.” Aline, laughing, told him: “You are crazy Werner, you don’t have any idea about aloe!” Aline was right.Werner spent countless man-hours browsing the Internet, obsessively lear-ning all about what would be needed to successfully start an aloe vera plan-tation. So perhaps it was destiny when Werner came across a cooperative on the Canary Islands that sold its aloe plants. He got in touch with Santiago Ro-dríguez, chair of the Canarias’ Aloe Vera Association, and invited him to stay at

his estate on Mallorca. Together they studied the soil, the climate, the ove-rall conditions, and then considered the possibilities. After the fruitful visit Werner purchased 40,000 2- and 3 -year-old aloe plants. It was not an investment for an impatient man, with a 5-year waiting period from planting before he could hope to harvest them. The climate on the North of Mallorca, with high tem-peratures during the day, low tem-peratures at night, and 2,800 hours

Werner supo que era una señal. Se puso en contacto con Santiago Rodríguez, presidente de la Asociación de Aloe Vera de Cana-rias y lo invitó 10 días a su finca. Analizaron el suelo, el clima, las condicio-nes y posibilidades. Después de la fructífera visita, Werner compró 40.000 plantas de aloe de 2 a 3 años de edad.Tras plantarlas, tocaba esperar a que cumpliesen los 5 años necesarios para recoger la primera cosecha. El clima del norte de Mallorca, con altas temperaturas durante el día y bajas

durante la noche y sus 2800 horas de sol anuales, resultó ser perfecto para obtener un aloe de altísima calidad. A pesar de comenzar con el proyecto en 2008, hace poco más de dos años obtuvieron finalmente todos los permisos y certificaciones necesarios para poner en marcha no sólo el negocio en sí, sino la propia granja como punto de interés

turístico. Hoy, Aloe Vera Farm recibe a turistas y residentes de lunes a sá-bado, ofreciendo la posibilidad de observar las plantas desde su estado natural hasta su procesamiento. “El aloe es la planta que contiene la may-or cantidad de Acemannan,”, explica Werner. “A los pacientes que han te-nido cáncer, se les recomienda una dieta y cuidado con aloe vera, porque el Acemannan acelera la regeneración de células y el rejuvenecimiento de las mismas”, añade. El aloe también actúa como agente probiótico gastrointestinal, tiene efec-to euglicemiante (mantiene estables los niveles de azúcar en sangre den-

Werner während er seinen morgenlichen Saft in kurzen Schlucken trinkt: Frisch gepresste Orangen, ein wenig Banane und Aloe Vera-Saft.Nach einiger Zeit auf der Insel, träumte Werner eine Nacht davon, dass auf seinem 40-Hektar-Grundstück Aloe-Vera-Pflazen überall zu sehen waren. Am darauffolgenden Morgen sass er seiner Frau gegenüber und sagte ihr: „Ich habe es. Wir werden Aloe Vera anpflanzen.” Aline antwortete ihm laut lachelnd: „Werner, Du bist verrückt, Du hast keine Ahnung über Aloe Vera!” Aline hatte Recht.Es war vielleicht das Schicksal dafür zuständig, dass Werner eines Tages eine Kooperative auf den Kanarischen Inseln fand, die ihre Aloe-Pflan-zen verkaufte. Er suchte zwar stets Aloe im Internet, aber als er sie fand, wusste er sofort, dass das ein Signal war. Er setzte sich in Kontakt mit San-tiago Rodríguez, dem Vorsitzenden des Aloe-Vera-Verbandes der Kanaris-chen Inseln und lud ihn zehn Tage lang zu sich nach Hause ein. Zusammen erkundeten sie den Boden, das Klima, die Möglichkeiten und die Lage.

Nach dem sehr produktiven Besuch kaufte Werner 2 und 3 Jahre alte Aloe-Pflanzen. Er musste die nötigen 5 Jahre bis zur ersten Ernte warten, na-chdem er sie gepflanzt hatte. Das Klima im Norden Mallor-cas, mit hohen Temperaturen am Tag und niedrigen Tem-peraturen in der Nacht und die 2.800 Sonnenstunden im

Jahr auf der Insel sorgten dafür, dass alle diese Faktoren die optimale Ku-lisse für eine Aloe Vera höchster Qualität bildeten.Vor ca. zwei Jahren bekamen sie endlich alle notwendigen Erlaubnisse und Zertifizierungen, um nicht nur ihren Laden zu starten, sondern sich selbst als Ort von touristischem Interesse vorstellen zu dürfen. Das alles, obwohl sie mit dem Projekt im Jahre 2008 eigentlich angefangen hatten.
