Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This year we have talked at great length about making a difference. Let me tell you we have made aHUGE difference in the lives of people. Hungry have been fed, homeless have found shelter, and liveshave been restored. Not only have we done these things, we will continue to do them; however, this isjust a small glimpse of what we will experience this holiday season.

One has come who has made all the difference in the world. By Jesus coming here to live and walk andcry and die among humans, God has made a cosmic shift in how humans and God can encounter eachother.

This Christmas Eve and Day we have 12 worship services. Here is my request of you: Take someone withyou. Not just on Christmas Eve but during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Show them how Jesushas made all the difference in the world to you.

On that first Christmas the angels sang, the shepherds where astonished, and the kings where shaking in their boots becauseof the new thing God had done. We invite you to experience the same power. The power that was pleased to dwell in a tinyvulnerable baby. A baby that would grow to save all creation. O COME LET US ADORE HIM. For he has made all things new.

Jesus Christ. Straiton is a graduate of Luther Seminary and the University of Minnesota.

She willbe taking all she has learned in Youth Ministry over the past 15 years (six at St. Andrew's), andtranslating it to the adults. She will be helping our congregation grow deeper into the callinggiven them at their Baptisms so the church truly is a Priesthood of All Believers. Through ministries of SmallGroups, New Members, Hospitality and engaging our current St. Andrew's community, Christ will be proclaimed, lived in and served. Morris is a graduate of Wartburg Seminary.

As we continue to align with our mission, Pastor Brian Norsman and Pastor Cindy Senarighi will be more focused than ever on providing top notch leadership in their areas; Brian in Children, Youth and Family Ministries and Cindy in Pastoral Care at the church and St. Andrew’s Village.

Proclaiming Jesus Personally and Publically: Why I am a Member at St. Andrew’s Lutheran ChurchIt’s a small world! Ifirst heard aboutSt. Andrew’s fromthe youth directorat our homechurch in St. Louis,MO. He had beenan intern at St. An-drew’s a few yearsago and thoughtwe would reallylike the church andall the activities itwould have for usand our family. So, during a visit to Minnesota, we attendedSt. Andrew’s one Sunday morning and were made to feelvery welcomed. We loved the sermon by Pastor Mike Carl-son. (Our grandkids loved the cookies after the service!)Then, after moving here we began to attend regularly. Every-one we have met since that first Sunday has been open, warm and welcoming. All of the activities for children havebeen amazing. I have also become a part of the small groupministry and have joined a couple of small groups. All ofthese things have made us realize that St. Andrew’s is a won-derful place for us and our entire family. St. Andrew’s hasbecome our new church home.

$10,000 Scholarship Donation to FoundationThe Navigator Fund within the Foundation was created to nurture legacy gifts that can grow over time. The initial two “MustardSeed” donations were designed to provide Spark and Connect Bibles. Recently, another couple set aside money from a parent’sestate to make a $10,000 donation to jump-start a “Mustard Seed” account to fund scholarships to students from St. Andrew’s at-tending seminary training. The couple hopes that this seed money will lead to other legacy gifts to grow these scholarships. If youwould like to help with any of these mustard seeds or if you have a desire to start a mustard seed of your own to support a St. An-drew’s mission, please contact the Foundation through Lori Goodroad (651 762-9103) for further information. Donations to theFoundation are permanent legacy gifts where only the income is used for grants. These gifts are not a substitute for current dona-tions to St. Andrew’s that support ongoing operations and missions.

Helping make where welive specialThere is something special about where welive. Our parks, our traditions, but most of allwhere we live is special because of you. Ourcommunity is made healthier and safer by theworks of the people who live here.

How does the St. Andrew’s Foundation help inmaking this community better for all of us?

The Foundation of St. Andrew’s helps make the entire St CroixValley a better place to live by helping other organizations withgrants and funding which reach out and help those in need. The Foundation helps support Treehouse, The St. Andrew’s Re-source Center, and other local missions that help keep ourcommunity safer and a better overall place to live.

The Foundation also provides scholarships and grants to peo-ple attending seminary and Christian camps, allowing our nextgeneration to carry on the values of the type of people whohave built our community.

Please consider asking the Foundation how you can participatein helping to continue to make our community a better place tolive for years to come.

Re-published from the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity blogat blog.tchabitat.org/blog

Roger and Vicki Henry are an energetic, passionate, and lov-ing couple and self-proclaimed “Habi-holics.” They have beeninvolved with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH) sincethe organization’s early years, and continue to be among the or-ganization’s most dedicated and passionate supporters.

Roger Henry origi-nally became inter-ested in working withHabitat for Humanity(HFH) in 1989 afterpurchasing an oldhouse on Lincoln Av-enue in St. Paul.Habitat volunteerswere working to re-store and repair oldhomes in his neighborhood, and this piqued Henry’s interest.

“My dad instilled a passion in me for renovating old homes,”Henry shared. “I didn’t know much about Habitat at the time, but I sure learned!”

Roger also got involved volunteering with others in his Fair-mount Avenue United Methodist St. Paul congregation. Likemany of our faith partners, Habitat is driven to serve families inneed with generosity, humility, and love, and encourages peopleof all faith backgrounds and beliefs to join us in our commongoal of eliminating poverty housing.

Vicki Henry’s connection to Habitat began for very differentreasons. She was working on obtaining her degree at the Uni-versity of Minnesota, and was required to do a leadership proj-ect to achieve an A in one of her courses. Vicki immediatelycontacted her pastor at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mah-tomedi, MN, who readily provided a list of ways that she couldprovide leadership for the church to reach out to the local com-munity. The opportunities at Twin Cities Habitat caught Vicki’sattention, and she threw herself into creating a plan to get herchurch involved in Habitat’s mission.

“I was eager to get things organized and asked a lot of ques-tions,” said Vicki. “That’s when I found out about the fundraiserwalk.”

That 1992 Habitat fundraiser walk at Powderhorn Park inMinneapolis is where Roger and Vicki first met.

“We ended up walking in the same pack,” Vicki recalled. “Istarted talking with people and asking more questions andRoger happened to be one of those people. We had a lot in com-mon and we both were involved through our churches.”

Through what some may call fate, the following MondayVicki was contacted by the HFH coordinator at FairmountMethodist, who notified her that TCHFH assigned her to speakat the first St. Andrew’s Habitat orientation/information meet-ing. Vicki mentioned meeting Roger at the event over the week-end and the coordinator decided to bring him along to the

orientation ses-sion!

Roger andVicki's WeddingRingsSt. Andrew’sChurch sponsoredits first week in1993, and Roger and Vicki regularly connected on-site; Vickivolunteering with her church, and Roger as a local neighbor-hood volunteer. Their relationship grew, and they eventuallymarried on July 2, 1994. They even had the Twin Cities Habitatlogo incorporated into the design of their wedding rings!

Throughout their marriage, Vicki and Roger have continuedto be actively engaged with Twin Cities Habitat. Both of themvolunteer through St. Andrew’s Church and the 3Mgives HFHproject , and are involved with the St. Andrew’s Regular Volun-teer Crew that helps build year-round. The couple also servedas a Neighborhood Family Partner for a few Habitat families, in1993, 2013 and currently in 2014.

“Our 2013 family calls us their ‘American grandparents’,”Vicki laughed. The Henrys have continued their relationshipwith the family as friends even after their role as Family Partnerended.

In addition to their work through their church and with part-ner families, the Henrys attend Habitat events and have volun-teered with Habitat in Jamaica and on a Costa Rica GlobalVillage Trip. Roger also serves on Habitat’s Faith Advisory Com-mittee.

ROGER AND VICKI ON SITE “One of the aspects [of Habitat] that has always impressed

me is how people from so many different backgrounds and skilllevels can show up on–site and get so much done in one day,”Roger shared. “Part of the satisfaction for me is when some-body walks away from a build and says, ‘I’ve never done thatbefore, and now I know how to do it!’”

The couple also make a point to regularly support Habitatthrough current donations and have included Habitat for Hu-manity in their will.

“I’ve learned that there’s a great need for affordable hous-ing,” Vicki said. “I’ve also learned that you always receive moreblessings when you serve and give. I enjoy the sound of ham-mers pounding nails, and love the idea of the Habitat homeown-ers putting in sweat equity as their down payment and knowingthat I’m serving a much bigger purpose. It’s amazing that whatstarted out as a college project has led to St. Andrew’s becom-ing one of the leading churches to partner with Habitat for Hu-manity.”

After celebrating their 20th anniversary earlier this month,Roger and Vicki are choosing which Global Village Trip they willsign up for–their next big adventure.

“Maybe Ethiopia this time?!” Vicki smiled.

VVISIONISION SSLOVAKIALOVAKIA –– THETHE MIRACLEMIRACLE CONTINUESCONTINUES

The Vision Slovakia pages in this issue of Proclaim are an invi-tation to become an active participant in this ministry of St. An-drew’s. Many of you are now sponsoring tuition costs forstudents of the Lutheran Elementary School and adult studentsof the Bible School in Martin, Slovakia. Others have taught Con-versational English during the summer to the adult students ofthe Bible School and Vacation Bible School during the summerto the children of Martin. Still others have been involved severaltimes in the reconstruction and renovation of the buildings onthe campus of the Center for Christian Education throughbuilders’ groups traveling to Martin.

The CommitmentSt. Andrew’s has been involved in the former Eastern bloc na-tion of Slovakia for over 16 years. Recently people have asked,“When will our ministry there be done?” and, “Aren’t they capa-ble of teaching programs like Vacation Bible School now?” and,“Why is it taking them so long to become financially independ-ent?”

These are difficult and complex questions for many reasons. Wedidn’t choose this ministry, but this opportunity has been giftedto us and called by God to serve as a congregation. We havecontinued to establish partnerships with other congregationswho are also committed and called into the support of this min-istry of Christian education in Slovakia.

In this ministry we have received far more from our Slovak part-ners than we have given. They have given us a vision of theircommitment to teach and proclaim the gospel for this new timeof freedom. They have lived through times when it has not onlybeen difficult, but even impossible to worship. These are faithfulpeople with a vision to reestablish Christian education and free-dom of worship. They continue to recover from the trauma ofliving with totalitarian regimes for over 40 years under commu-nism following WW II, and the reign of terror and holocaustunder the Third Reich.

Self-worth and initiative were virtually destroyed during theseyears with the daily threat of imprisonment and death. Recordswere secretly kept on persons and innocent people who wereidentified as enemies of the state. This so-called informationwas used to incarcerate and martyr Slovak citizens for any out-ward expression of their faith in God.

Jan Bohdan Hrobon was a Lutheran pastor who dared to carryout his ministry under all these dangers and still live faithfullyto his call to proclaim and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. His

vision was to reestablish Christian education schools for chil-dren, youth and adults. Others shared his vision to once againprovide for educational freedom to instill the Christian faith for anew generation. He died in 2006 but his vision lives on. His son,Bohdan Hrobon, continues to serve as the director of the Centerfor Christian Education in Martin, Slovakia.

The HistoryThese schools have been firmly established, as you will read inthe following descriptions, but they are still in their infancy andwe cannot fail to support them even now. These are crucialtimes for the faithful in Slovakia and the partnership we sharewith them as we continue to walk with them. This is as impor-tant now as it has been in the past 16 years.

To offer Christian education has been a life-long vision of theforefathers and current leaders of the Center for Christian Edu-cation in Martin, Slovakia. The present generation of leadersand teachers is the first, after many decades of repression, tohave the freedom to proclaim the gospel freely and to equip layleaders to be missionaries of Christ.

The story of the Center for Christian Education began in 1998with the creation of a Bible School, offering a weekend studyprogram in the Bible and Christian elementary teaching. Its pri-mary purpose was to provide nurturing Christian education forthose who sensed the inadequacy of their knowledge of theirChristian roots. The theme verse of the school is inscribed inseveral languages on the central floor-to-ceiling window of the

Bible School building, expressing Jesus’ words of promise: “Youwill know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

The Bible School’s offerings soon expanded to include basic ed-ucation in social work and pastoral care. With a number of part-ner congregations in the USA, the Bible School continues toannually educate leaders for missions in Eastern Europe. In2003 the Bible School established the Lutheran ElementarySchool. They realized that to reach the current generation ofchildren and parents a program of education for elementary agechildren needed to be established. The addition of the LutheranElementary School became a partner in what is now known asthe Center for Christian Education.

The StrategyThe Center for Christian Education has a strategic location. It issituated in the town of Martin (population 60,000) at the veryheart of Slovakia, only a few kilometers from the geographicalcenter of Europe. It is at the crossroads of Poland, Ukraine, Hun-gary, Czech Republic, and Western Europe.

The Center for Christian Education also has a strategic vision. Itis seizing this very opportune moment inhistory. This is a transition period follow-ing decades of communism, a totalitar-ian regime dominated by atheisticideology and injustice that led to perse-cution, isolation and reduction of theChurch’s life. The role of laity was di-minished, resulting in a loss of missionoutreach. Now that Central Europe is en-joying a time of freedom, democracyand social justice, the hope is to reintro-duce a church which is faithful to itscalling and relevant in today’s world. This can be done through quality educa-tion in the Christian faith which is fo-cused on theology, social ministry andmission work.

The Center for Christian Education has astrategic plan. It is working toward its

goals by creating educational institutions covering all agegroups – kindergarten, elementary school, high school, univer-sity level, and continuing education for laity in the Bible, theChurch’s doctrine, social work and mission work. At the centerof the campus stands the Martin Lutheran Church, a living sym-bol of all that takes place through the many programs of theCenter for Christian Education.

Lutheran Kindergarten – established in September 2012In September 2012, the Center for Christian Education openedthe first protestant kindergarten in the Martin area. This wasestablished with the leadership of the Martin Lutheran Church,

along with American and Slovak vol-unteer construction workers and thefinancial support of partnering indi-viduals and congregations in the USA.The goal of the new kindergarten pro-gram is to communicate the love ofGod and to nurture the youngest chil-dren and their parents in the Chris-tian faith.

Lutheran Elementary School – established in 2003The Lutheran Elementary School wascreated to be a place where children could come to know JesusChrist, be free to ask the most important questions about life,God and the world, and receive competent, high-quality Chris-tian instruction. The school has become an effective missiontool as it makes a significant impact not only in the lives of itsstudents, but also in the lives of the students’ parents, familiesand congregations. This is mission in the Christian faith througheducation of the highest quality.

Bilingual High School – established in September 2013The educational program of the Lutheran Elementary Schoolthoroughly prepares pupils for a bilingual (Slovak and English)high school education. This new program has been approved bythe Slovak Ministry of Education and opened in the fall of 2013.In creating this new program, Christian high school educationreturns to the Martin region after 130 years of absence.

Department of Religious Studies – established in 2012The academic abilities of the Bible School faculty were recog-nized by the neighboring state-run University of Zilina in 2012,when the University established a Department of ReligiousStudies. This recognition was also prompted by the success ofgraduating students in the two pioneer study programs taughtat the university by the Bible School faculty. The B.A. and M.A.degrees in Religious Education were established in 2001, andthe B.A. degree in Mission Work with Children and Youth wasestablished in 2006.

An Invitation to Participate and ServeThe theme, “The Miracle Continues” proclaims the faith andhope of the CCE in Martin, Slovakia. Into the many aspects ofthis partnership, there is a place for you to serve Christ’schurch. The vision we share with our partners in Slovakia con-tinues to be a gift from God, and we are blessed as a congrega-tion to have received this vision. To God alone the glory!

Please consider this your personal invitation and call from Godto serve in this ministry. For further information on how youmay serve contact Paul Berge, director of Vision Slovakia. I canbe reached by email: [email protected], and by phoneat St. Andrew’s: 651-762-9143.
