A B O U T C O M PA N Y
Established in New York City in 2009 and relocated to Côte d’Ivoire since 2012 where its production takes place, the brand is best described as a fusion between traditional cultures/ sub-cultures and contemporary fashion. In fact, Loza Maléombho credits her early world wide exposure for the ecclectic aesthetic and multi-culturalism present in her work. Born in Brazil and raised between Côte d’Ivoire and the United States, she was designing since 13 and graduated in 2006 from the University of the Arts of Philadelphia with a BA of Fine Arts in Animation. She was then initiated to the fashion industry by interning with New york based designers Jill Stuart, Yigal Azrouël and Cynthia Rowley all before deciding to start a brand of her own. By producing in Côte d’Ivoire, Loza’s vision is to empower women with a small manufacturing workshop that produces the collection and hires young women from unfavorable backgrounds. She also works closely with local artisans on featured products such as Indigo dye fabric, jewelry, shoes and accessories.

T r a d i t i o n a l A f r i c a n m as ks Ritual and social meanings Ritual and ceremonial masks are an essentia l feature of the tradit ional culture and art of the peoples of Sub-Saharan Afr ica. Whi le the speci f ic impl icat ions associated to r i tual masks widely vary in di f ferent cultures, some traits are common to most Afr ican cultures. For instance, masks usual ly have a spir i tual and rel ig ious meaning and they are used in r i tual dances and socia l and rel ig ious events, and a specia l status is attr ibuted to the art ists that create masks and to those that wear them in ceremonies. In most cases, mask-making is an art that is passed on from father to son, a long with the knowledge of the symbol ic meanings conveyed by such masks.
