YOUR SOFTBALL PROFILE

Your success in softball is determined by two things:1. Your natural physical ability or talent; you could also call this your potential.2. How well you use that ability.

No one can do anything about your natural ability. That was set for you at birth. Some people are bornbigger, faster, stronger and with better coordination than others. You have the natural ability you haveand nothing can change that, so from this point on in this report we are not talking about natural ability.

Here's the good news: Your success is determined much more by how you use the talent you wereborn with than how much talent you were born with.

FEW PLAYERS EVER REACH THEIR PHYSICAL POTENTIAL.

So what are the keys to unlocking your potential? What are you missing? What are you not seeing? What are you not doing? How can you get access to your true talent and find out how good you can beat softball? The assessment you just took gives you the answers. The big question now is: "Whatdetermines how well you use your talent?"*The Two Worlds of Softball*

We divide softball performance into two "Worlds." The first is the Outer World or Game View. Thisworld includes everything that is outside of you. These include things like your teammates, your coaches, the field, and the rules and strategies of the game.

The second world is everything that happens inside of you, your Inner World or Self View. Thisincludes things like your confidence, mental toughness, values, beliefs, desires, thoughts, and feelings.

How well you play softball and (how close you come to playing to your potential) is determined by yourperformance in these two worlds. Specifically 1) how well you "see" the Outer World of softball (we callthis your "understanding of what it takes to win in softball"); and 2) how well your Inner World values andbeliefs free you to do what it takes to win in softball.

In short, the ultimate question for you as an individual player is: Do you understand what it takes towin in softball and are you able and willing to do what it takes to win in softball?

1. Understanding what it takes to win in Softball:How well do you understand the demands of softball and the demands of the position you play?

This world includes everything that is outside of you. These include things like

your teammates, your coaches, the field, and the rules and strategies of the

game.

Game View

7.6

This is the first of two hugely important scores to your softball career. This is the “Outside of You”score – a sum of all the elements presented in Part 1 of this report. It tells you how well youunderstand what is needed for you to succeed in softball. It is a general measure of your ability tosee what is happening on the field and identify and accurately judge what’s really important. Thisscore reveals how well you understand what the game of softball is actually all about.

High scores indicate a clear and definite understanding of softball, and knowing what it takes towin. You pick up the “little details” that make a big difference in the outcome of the game. Thisgives you a big advantage over most players. You see things they don’t see, and you pay attentionto the things that actually are the most valuable!

2. Emotional Game Control:How well do you maintain emotional control under stress during a softball game?

7.1

When the pressure is on and the game is on the line, can you keep your head clear and makegood decisions, or do you get rattled and experience the game “speeding up” on you? The higheryour score, the more “clutch” you are.

High scores indicate you generally stay calm, cool and collected when the heat is on. You’re likelyseen as a “clutch” player your team wants to have hitting or pitching when the game is on the line. One note of caution: your score also suggests you may not consistently or appropriately vent yourfeelings, preferring instead to keep them inside. Be on the lookout for that. Perhaps do somejournaling about your feelings to see for yourself what’s going on inside you.

3. Understanding Teammates and Coaches:

How well do you understand the roles and importance of teammates, umpires and coaches?

6.6

This score measures your mental clarity regarding the importance of other players in any softballteam effort and how players, coaches and umpires interface to make the game of softball. Ofcourse you know they’re all important, but players differ in the value they place on teammates, coaches and umpires. This has a huge impact on what you choose to do and how you play. It alsoaffects how your teammates relate to you. Do you give them positive energy or do you take itaway? This is something they pick up from you but are unlikely to tell you.

Moderate scores indicate that you have a relatively good grasp of how all participants contributeto the big picture of softball. You understand pretty well the value of the contributions of teammatesand coaches. Your tendency is to be supportive and sensitive to other players in the game most ofthe time. A higher score would make you a better teammate because your energy would be morepositive, you would value their contributions to your success and the team’s success more.

Note: The next 2 attributes (with percentage scores) are relative to the value of the attribute scoreabove (with the 10 point scale). If the number above is in the high range , then the attributesbelow are less significant and become more tendencies (or situational attributes) as your scoreabove approaches a 10.

4. Interpersonal Harmony:How well do you get along with your coaches and teammates?

UV

This score measures your attitude toward effective, positive relationships with othergame participants. It shows how engaged you are with your teammates, how well youget along with them, and how aware you are of the importance of having goodrelationships. In short, what kind of a teammate are you?

An under-valued or negative attitude indicates varying degrees of independence oremotional distance from other players, passive engagement, and in some cases, fear, reluctance or resistance to working closely with coaches and teammates.

If you have a high score in I see the value of my teammates and coaches (#3,above), your negative score here isn’t a big deal. You may currently be overlyfocused on results and/or feeling pressured or stressed.

If you have a low score in I see the value of my teammates and coaches (#3, above),it’s unlikely you’re a great teammate. You tend to under-estimate the abilities of otherplayers, take them for granted, ignore or disrespect them. You may undervalue theirstrengths, abilities and potential contributions and have an attitude like, “I don’t need

strengths, abilities and potential contributions and have an attitude like, “I don’t needmy coach or teammates telling me what to do.” You likely don’t get very “personal”with teammates. Perhaps you may have been hurt by someone close to you and feartaking the risk again. On the other hand, many professionals choose to keep anemotional distance from teammates purposely, to better maintain objectivity andcontrol. Ask some people about how they view you as a teammate. Consider gettingsome coaching on how to be a better teammate.

5. Interpersonal Conflict:How do you handle it when teammates make mistakes or disagree with you?

N

Get a team of people together doing something they are passionate about and thereWILL be conflict. This score measures your attitude toward conflict with other players. Are you aggressive or passive toward a teammate when he does something youdon’t like or makes a mistake on or off the field? This score reveals how you are mostlikely to handle it.

A neutral or balanced attitude shows you have a balanced and accurate view of“harm” done by others. Players with this score see and judge others’ faults andshortcomings realistically and fairly. You are clearly aware that personal criticism andblame directed at others could be counter-productive, and you generally try toengage them in a fair way that makes your point while preserving the relationship andtheir confidence. Yours is the best place to be on this one.

6. Understanding Player Performance:How well do you grasp the “cause and effect” aspects of softball?

6.8

Do you see and understand what actions must be taken to win? This score reveals your mentalgrasp of tangible, observable softball game realities, like what causes what, and what do youphysically have to do to succeed. We’re talking about the visible mechanics and execution ofsoftball. If you were a robot and your coach could program you to take the “right” softball actions, how would he would program you to do these things? The higher your score, the better“programmed” you are for these softball actions.

Moderate scores indicate you generally know what to do or how to play in a given softball game orcontext, but you may occasionally take things for granted, overlook certain details, or get impatientwith the process and lose focus. You can see what it takes to win and believe winning is important, but are not a big “student of the game” always looking for that extra edge. Sort of like getting a B orB+ in school. You are not likely to be an “over-achiever.”

Note: The next 2 attributes (with percentage scores) are relative to the value of the attribute scoreabove (with the 10 point scale). If the number above is in the high range , then the attributes

7. Attitude toward Team Success:How well do you thrive in a softball team setting? How much energy do you put toward teamsuccess?

N

Do you bring a “winning spirit” to your team or do you focus more on errors andmistakes? Softball has many routines and rituals. Each team has its own “norms” andrhythms. This score reflects your attitude toward conforming to those routines andnorms. It shows how you relate to your team’s success and failure. It indicates thedegree to which you are engaged in the flow of the game from a team standpoint. Areyou “all in” and a positive contributor to team chemistry? Or do you drain energy fromthe team?

A neutral or balanced attitude shows you are a good, solid teammate. You “play wellwith others.” You’re fair and value sportsmanship. You don’t over- or under-value thepotential of the team, nor are you overly depend on it for your well-being. This is ahealthy place to be, although a team full of players with this attitude is unlikely tosurprise people by playing better than expected.

8. Attitude toward Team Challenges and Problems:What is your response to your teammates when “bad” things happen?

UV

This score reflects your attitude and response to the many setbacks and problems asoftball team experiences. It shows how you relate to your teammates during failureand adversity.

An under-valued or negative attitude shows you “under-value” the “bad” things thathappen in games or that your teammates do. In other words, you judge “bad” thingsthat happen in a game as less bad than they really are. You accept conflicts andproblems more than you should. This could mean you are currently not activelyinvolved in the game – as in you are not a starter and feel you do not contribute toany team failure. If you are playing, this indicates an acceptance of your team’s oryour own poor performance or softball play problems. In your mind, ugly plays, missed catches, losses, injuries, strike-outs, and other “bad” things are all part of thegame and are to be accepted as such. While they are part of the game, you don’tcare enough about them to be a championship level teammate.

Combined with a high clarity score in Understanding Player Performance (#6 above),this could mean you prefer to avoid conflict situations. If your attitude is overvalued in

this could mean you prefer to avoid conflict situations. If your attitude is overvalued inthe score above (#7), and undervalued here, this is a strong indication you exhibit a“play to win” versus a “play to avoid losing” attitude. You focus on playing the gamewell and right, and are willing to take risks to win, versus a mistake-avoidance (no-risk) focus.

Combined with a low clarity score in Understanding Player Performance (#6 above)and an undervalued score above (#7), this shows you may distance yourself from theteam in a game. Perhaps you just don’t want to be emotionally connected with theteam or perhaps you can’t because doing so would be overwhelming to youemotionally. You might make errors that cost the whole team. You may or may not bea big drain on the team’s energy, but you most likely are not helping it.

9. Understanding Discipline, Rules, & the Game Plan:How well do you understand the discipline and demands of softball?

9.4

This dimension is about “what’s what” in softball in terms of how the game is organized: the rules, the techniques, the strategies and the purpose for each. It involves the standards, principles, organization, policies, rules, and all elements establishing discipline, structure, and order.

High scores indicate you get it. You’re dedicated to high standards and principles, gameknowledge, and clear understanding of game rules, purpose and routines. As a result you likelyhave positive, productive relationships with authority figures, such as coaches, trainers andumpires.

Note: The next 2 attributes (with percentage scores) are relative to the value of the attribute scoreabove (with the 10 point scale). If the number above is in the high range , then the attributesbelow are less significant and become more tendencies (or situational attributes) as your scoreabove approaches a 10.

10. Attitude toward Coaching and Respect for Authority:How cooperative and respectful are you toward coaches, umpire decisions and game or teamrules?

N

This score measures your attitude toward the benefits of respecting and obeyingauthority. Do you think it’s helpful to be “coachable,” respectful of umpires, and dowhat your trainers tell you to do?

A neutral or balanced attitude shows you have a healthy respect for the benefits ofrules. You see their importance and the value of being coachable and respectingumpires and other authority figures. You value two-way communication centered ongenuine willingness to cooperate with baseball authority figures. You’re dynamic and

genuine willingness to cooperate with baseball authority figures. You’re dynamic andflexible, and though you generally follow the rules and regulations, you are alsowilling to speak up if you believe something is wrong or not working. You have a goodattitude about authority and rules.

11. Attitude toward Breakdowns:How do you respond when decisions are made with which you disagree?

OV

Is it important to be organized and structured? This score measures your attitudetoward disorganization and lack of structure. It also shows your attitude towarddisorganization and deficiencies in game systems, rules and planning. How do youfeel when the structure of the game, decisions, or the team breaks down?

An over-valued or positive attitude indicates you tend to magnify and spend toomuch energy on negative things and tend to over-react to breakdowns. You are likelyactively engaged in pointing out any deficiencies you see in other players or gamesystems, including umpires (bad calls, not backing up a base, loss of mental focus,etc.). You may be super critical of players who “cheat” or break the rules, as well ascoaches and trainers who make diagnostic errors, bad decisions, or who may not liveup to your expectations.

12. Motivation to DO what it takes to win:

How willing and able are you to DO what it takes to win in softball?

This includes things like your confidence, mental toughness, values, beliefs,

desires, thoughts, and feelings.

Self View

8.3

This is the second of the two most important scores in this report. It’s your summary score for thepart of softball that is happening “Inside of You.” The higher your score, the better your motivation, confidence, mental toughness and self-esteem. The higher your score the more skilled you are atmanaging the emotions that come with the ups and downs of softball. The higher your score themore clearly you can see yourself succeeding. The lower your score, the more you are getting inyour own way. Your way of thinking and seeing yourself in the game is putting up internal roadblocks and those blocks are keeping your talent from showing up on the field. If you have dreamsof playing at higher levels, a strong score here is vital.

High scores indicate you are willing and able to do what it takes to succeed in softball. You havehigh levels of self confidence, emotional control, motivation, self-worth, and role clarity. Yourmental game is a big advantage for you. You are likely able to consistently access your talent (asopposed to having your natural and trained abilities choked off by fears and doubts). This is alsogood news for you in your life off the field.

13. Emotional Self Control:How well do you handle and respond to softball or game stressors that directly affect you?

7.8

This is a measure of how well you handle the stresses of everyday life as a softball player. If youhave emotional self-control you have the ability to keep your emotions well organized and undercontrol when confronted with personal or softball game problems. Do you respond to problems in acalm, rational manner?

High scores indicate you have the ability to remain calm and objective in high stress gamesituations, especially those involving changes or challenges to your position or standing on the

situations, especially those involving changes or challenges to your position or standing on theteam.

14. Intuitive Awareness of Self Worth:How well do you understand the value you bring to softball as a unique individual – apart from your stats?

9.4

This score measures your sense of self-worth – a hugely important factor in your softball successand enjoyment. When players have a low sense of self-worth, that is, when they don’t think highlyof themselves as people apart from their softball performance, they put enormous pressure onthemselves to succeed. They link their results on the field to their value as a person. Since failureis such a normal part of softball, they tend to feel bad about themselves much of the time. They livein fear of failure. Fear causes tension and distraction which lead to bad performance: They attractthe very thing they fear.

A high sense of self-worth means you know you’re a good person even when you fail on the field. This frees you to play great because you aren’t afraid to fail. It gives you a feeling of“connectedness” with the world of softball, and a huge advantage over most players.

High scores indicate you have a strong, clear understanding of your value as a person in softball. You know you are unique and irreplaceable and you don’t define yourself through what you canaccomplish and achieve in softball. A high score indicates you have faith in yourself and yoursoftball potential, and understand your strengths and weaknesses very well. You have developed astrong comfort level and feel at home on the field, and you enjoy just being you. This frees yourphysical talents and skills to play on the field.

Note: The next 2 attributes (with percentage scores) are relative to the value of the attribute scoreabove (with the 10 point scale). If the number above is in the high range , then the attributesbelow are less significant and become more tendencies (or situational attributes) as your scoreabove approaches a 10.

15. Insight into Personal Softball Potential:Do you have the inner drive to improve and get better as a softball player?

UV

How bad do you want it? This score reflects your inner drive to achieve yourpotential. It tells you, at the subconscious level, the degree to which you desire to tapinto your softball potential and bring it into reality. It is a measure of the quality of yourinternal motivation.

An under-valued or negative score indicates you want to get better – in fact, you feelyou NEED to get better. You agree you have a lot of undeveloped potential withinand you desire to make it real and actual.

Combined with a high clarity score in Intuitive Awareness of Self Worth (#14 above),this attitude is less significant, but still implies you have a strong desire for furtherimprovement.

Combined with a moderate or low score in Intuitive Awareness of Self Worth (#14above), this attitude indicates varying levels of dissatisfaction with who you currentlyare in your softball world. You don’t feel you’re where you need to be. You may notbelieve that training and practice bring out the best in you, and you may not havemuch faith in yourself that you can play to the potential others say you have. Youlikely don’t feel “at home in the world of softball.” However, this tends to fuel the firewithin to continuously work on improving yourself and your game.

16. Attitude Toward Personal Softball Problems:What is your attitude about personal problems or barriers to softball excellence?

UV

This score reflects your attitude toward personal problems or obstacles that maystand in your way to achieving higher levels of success in softball.

An under-valued or negative score indicates you agree that you have some personalproblems (e.g. your past performance may make you miserable or ashamed, youmay lie to yourself, etc.). However, you strongly desire to overcome these problemsand become a better softball player.

Combined with high clarity scores in Intuitive Awareness of Self Worth (#14 above),any obstacles or problems you may face are likely temporary or situational, and youshould have no difficulty resolving them, given some time and effort.

Combined with a low score in Intuitive Awareness of Self Worth (#14 above), youagree you have some problems and need to develop more faith in yourself to resolvethem.

17. Softball Role, Position & Performance:Do you feel your talents are being fully utilized within the demands of your current position on the team? Are you“all in” with the team and your role on it? Are you and your team a good fit?

7.4

This score measures your ability to be at peace with your roles as a softball player both on and offthe field. It indicates the degree to which you are getting personal fulfillment from your position inthe game of softball as well as your sense that you’re at the right position for you. A high scoresuggests strong identification with your role on the team.

High scores indicate strong identification with your softball game position and indicate you are not

High scores indicate strong identification with your softball game position and indicate you are notexperiencing position or role conflict. You likely feel at home in the position you are playing and theteam role you have and you don’t spend time wishing your position on the team (or field) wasdifferent. This helps you stay “present” focused during practice and games with your energyfocused on your softball role.

Note: The next 2 attributes (with percentage scores) are relative to the value of the attribute scoreabove (with the 10 point scale). If the number above is in the high range , then the attributesbelow are less significant and become more tendencies (or situational attributes) as your scoreabove approaches a 10.

18. Attitude Toward Playing Big:Do you go “all-out” when you play your game?

UV

This score reflects your attitude toward your success in softball. Are you playing atyour best? It also measures the degree to which you enjoy your position on the team,as well as your other responsibilities -the more positive your attitude, the biggeryou’re likely to play.

An under-valued or negative score indicates something is “off.” You’re likely nothappy with your role or your team. You don’t find it fulfilling and this restricts you fromplaying big.

Combined with a high clarity score in Softball Role, Position & Performance (#17above), a negative score here is less significant, and indicates you may feel yourcurrent position or team affiliation does not offer many challenges or opportunities. You may be in transition or between teams. In other words, your low score meanssomething is off in your current situation (e.g. you don’t like your coach or yourteammates, or you have a physical issue holding you back), but you may see yourselfplaying free of those problems in the near future.

Combined with a low clarity score in Softball Role, Position & Performance (#17above), you agree you have softball and/or fitness health issues such as not beingable to fully apply your talents and further develop your potential, which can producean attitude of lower self-confidence and motivation. You may not be very team-oriented, you may judge yourself as a “bad” player, and you may have a hard timeimproving your performance due to your passive engagement. You lack thecommitment it takes to play big, and you actually take an emotional distance fromdiscipline and game preparation activities and your responsibility to maintain yourown fitness and game readiness.

19. Attitude toward Performance Problems:

How do you respond when problems arise or things go wrong because of your own poorperformance?

OV

This score reflects your attitude toward problems in your own performance, traininghabits, work ethic and game readiness and participation.

your softball performance goals and aspirations. This score is about the discipline, persistence and determination to win and maintaining a positive, winning mindseteven in the face of great adversity.

An over-valued or positive score indicates you are a gamer. You are going to play all-out, no matter what. You’re totally committed to your performance, and yourconsistent efforts and strong self-discipline nearly guarantee you will achieve yoursports goals. A positive attitude here indicates you are super-driven, and it is thispersistent drive, mental tenacity and resilience that results in your high level ofsoftball accomplishment. You have a passion for winning, and your quick thinkinghelps you know what’s next when playing. You clearly understand the rules of thegame, possess the mind speed needed for success, and believe your team candefinitely count on you.

22. Attitude Toward Personal Setbacks:How do you handle adversity, failure and disappointing outcomes?

UV

Softball is a game of adversity. If you haven’t failed in a game recently you’ll fail verysoon! To succeed in softball you must be able to avoid making mistakes and bounceback quickly when “bad” things happen. This score indicates your attitude towardsbarriers, difficulties and “dead-ends” or loss of direction on the road to success insoftball and life.

An under-valued or negative score indicates you may feel it is very difficult to getahead or reach higher levels of success. You may have unrealistic expectations thatare not being fulfilled, or you may dwell on mistakes you have made in the past.

Combined with a high clarity score in Maintaining a Winning Mindset (#20 above),this attitude becomes less significant; any problems you may be experiencing in thisarea are likely inherent in your current softball position or with your current team, andshould be temporary or situational; you know what to do, and should be able toresolve them quickly and move ahead.

Combined with a low clarity score in Maintaining a Winning Mindset (#20 above), youmay feel a loss of control and power over your destiny, making it difficult to overcomethe problems and barriers (which are magnified in your mind) standing in the way ofyour softball success. This could be the result of sustaining an injury that removesyou from active game play. You may be passively engaged, or have the tendency todwell on past mistakes or recent poor performance. This indicates that you are pre-occupied with personal setbacks – you are falling into negative mind-traps byfocusing on what you should avoid as opposed to what you should be doing tosucceed. This can put you in a slump. You need to practice training your mind tofocus on the positive vs. the negative, by setting realistic, positive goals with yourcoach or trainer, and embracing the discipline demands of the game.
