The OLFA name is an abbreviation of two Japanese words “to break a blade.” The OLFA logo itself, a parallelogram, is in the shape of a typical OLFA snap-off blade. The signature OLFA yellow corporate color is to signify our commitment to quality
and safety and has become recognized worldwide.
The history of OLFA® begins with its founder, Yoshio Okada (1931–1990), an inventor in search of a consistently sharp knife blade. While on his quest, two observations inspired him: the clean, sharp cutting edge produced when glass breaks and the simplicity of chocolate bars snapping into segments.
Combing the two allowed him to invent a revolutionary new type of cutting tool – the “snap-off blade,” – a
design that allowed users to quickly restore a sharp edge in seconds by simply snapping off a scored segment. With a simple snap, a blade can be renewed up to 13 times, saving builders and contractors time and money while improving productivity.
Okada would go on to introduce the world’s �rst rotary cutter in 1979, as well as extra heavy-duty 25mm blades in 1988.

The OLFA name is an abbreviation of two Japanese words “to break a blade.” The OLFA logo itself, a parallelogram, is in the shape of a typical OLFA snap-off blade. The signature OLFA yellow corporate color is to signify our commitment to quality
and safety and has become recognized worldwide.
The history of OLFA® begins with its founder, Yoshio Okada (1931–1990), an inventor in search of a consistently sharp knife blade. While on his quest, two observations inspired him: the clean, sharp cutting edge produced when glass breaks and the simplicity of chocolate bars snapping into segments.
Combing the two allowed him to invent a revolutionary new type of cutting tool – the “snap-off blade,” – a
design that allowed users to quickly restore a sharp edge in seconds by simply snapping off a scored segment. With a simple snap, a blade can be renewed up to 13 times, saving builders and contractors time and money while improving productivity.
Okada would go on to introduce the world’s �rst rotary cutter in 1979, as well as extra heavy-duty 25mm blades in 1988.
