As Dean of Australia’s National Law School, the Prize Ceremony is one of my favourite events on the annual calendar.

It is an opportunity to recognise our top students who have taken advantage of everything that the ANU College of Law has to offer. In rewarding them, we hope to emphasise the value this College places on the dedication, passion and perseverance that they have applied to the last academic year. Many students come to law school with a fire in their bellies – a desire to make a difference. These awards should serve as a validation of that ambition and a reminder that knowledge will set them on that path.

This ceremony is also an opportunity to give our diverse cohort a glimpse of what lies ahead. The prizes awarded each year are generously donated by ANU College of Law alumni and our friends in the legal community, who also wish to acknowledge our students’ achievements and follow their success. Amelia Simpson (BA (Hons) ’95, LLB (Hons) ‘97)

Associate Professor Amelia Simpson is one of Australia’s leading scholars of discrimination and equality principles in constitutional law. Her published research on interstate free trade doctrine has been cited and quoted by pluralities in Australia’s High Court and Federal Court. She is also currently the Sub-Dean (LLB and JD).

Amelia joined the ANU College of Law in 2000 after serving as Associate to Justice McHugh of the High Court of Australia. She was previously an ANU Law student where she received the University Medal in Law and Political Science and the ACT Bar Association Prize for Evidence.



Loren Ovens undertook the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic at the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) in Canberra. Eager to gain experience in a legal office and to see first-hand how the criminal justice system affects Indigenous Australians, she found the experience very moving.

“I enjoyed my time doing the course tremendously, and was deeply affected by the stories and the strength shown by the clients we assisted, the camaraderie and generosity of the solicitors and field officers, the engaging weekly discussions with the other students and guest lecturers and of course, the insightfulness and wit of Dr Tony Foley,” she said.

“When I reflect on my four years so far at ANU, my time at ALS stands out as one of the highlights.”

This year Loren is working part time in the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department while undertaking her fifth year of Law and International Relations.

“I feel very fortunate that my love for this course was reflected in my final marks,” she said.

“For me, a rich academic experience includes practical experience, where you are able to see the clients who benefit from your work and get a better sense of what you’d like to do after graduation. Courses like this provide space for different types of learning to occur.”

The success of this year’s Blackburn Medallists, Ellie Greenwood and Andreas Sherborne, is testament to their dedication to their chosen topics.

The focus of Andreas’s honours thesis was private international law however, it wasn’t always clear that Andreas would excel in law. In high school he was more interested in science and even took the ANU Extension course in Chemistry with an eye to going into neurosciences.

But he also loved languages and diplomacy, and realising that led him to law. When he took Conflict of Laws in his fourth year his focus really honed in on private international law.

“If anyone ever looks at my transcript they’ll see a complete change that year,” he said.

“It shows that hard work and interest can really combine to produce something amazing.”

Ellie took the bold step of holding ANU to account in her thesis on the failure of Australian universities to respond adequately to sexual assault occurring in their communities.

“I was attracted to do Honours because of the opportunity it presented to do in-depth research (by undergrad standards) on an issue that I am passionate about,” she said.

“The opportunity to work with Wayne Morgan, whose work and teaching I greatly admire, was also a big selling point.”

An international student from Singapore, Nicole Leong has begun her second year at ANU Law this year.

“I was attracted by ANU’s academic flexibility in allowing students to pursue their varying interests,” she said. “ANU was a natural choice given its reputation for law and strategic studies, where I can learn about security law and international dispute resolution.”

“At the same time, non-law electives allow me to explore interesting Security Studies courses offered by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, like crisis management and internal security.”

Studying in Australia and particularly at the ANU College of Law has helped Nicole grow as both a student and more generally.

“Meeting with students of diverse backgrounds and learning from teachers who are passionate in their field has been an enriching experience,” she said.

“Being an international student, one becomes more independent and responsible for their own learning.”

Being awarded the Dean’s International Student Prize has been a reinforcing experience for her.

“This recognition is a motivation for me to remain diligent in my studies while also enjoying the process,” she said.

Naomi Wootton has always been a driven student, receiving two academic scholarships – the ANU Region Scholarship and the Ethel Tory Scholarship – and the University Medal in 2016.

Now she has been awarded six more prizes: ACT Women Lawyers Association Prize for Law Studies; ACT Bar Association Prize for Evidence; Allens Prize for Competition Law; Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department and Australian Government Solicitor Prize; George Knowles Memorial Prize; and the prestigious Supreme Court Judges’ Prize.

“I am deeply convicted by the idea that those privileged with access to education have a duty to respect this privilege by working to the best of their ability in their chosen field,” Naomi said.

Naomi said if she could go back and give advice to herself as a first-year law student it would be to seek out the avenues that bring happiness and satisfaction.

“Worry less about resumé building and more about doing things that are interesting,” she said.

“Doing things that make you happy will inevitably make you a more interesting, well rounded person and that might help you get a job more easily than ticking all of the boxes you think you have to tick.”

Naomi now works as a tipstaff for the Honourable TF Bathurst, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

From cybercrime to patent disputes, Information Technology Law and Legislative Drafting Technology are both highly specific subjects while being relevant to a broad range of legal areas.

“I love the fact that this area of law represents the apotheosis of our current times,” said Surend.

“Information Technology is changing the world, fast. And the more we can bring the law along with that change the better off everyone will be.”

ANU Law’s strong relationship with Oracle has been key to maintaining the high quality of the courses. Oracle generously allows staff time to teach and tutor in these courses in the ANU College of Law and while it benefits the law school from a philanthropic standpoint, it is also exposes graduate talent for Oracle.

“Oracle were great about allowing us to do this, as academic co-operation has been a strong benefit to the company in the US,” Surend said.

The prestigious Supreme Court Judges’ Prize is awarded to the LLBHons or JDHons student who achieves the best results in their final honours examination.

The 2016 recipient, Naomi Wootton, joins the distinguished company of some of the ANU College of Law’s most notable and internationally-regarded alumni. Past winners are national and international leaders in the legal profesion across a diversity of fields from litigation and commercial law to human rights and social justice.

The Supreme Court Judges’ Prize was first awarded in 1967 to Bruce Donald AM, who went on to study at Harvard University under a Harkness Fellowship. He has practised law for over 45 years in commercial, public, media and environmental law, rising to Partner with two leading commercial law firms and co-authoring Trade Practices Law with the Hon JD Heydon.

The list of distinguished recipients has since grown to include Federal Court of Australia Judge, Justice John Griffiths (1974); internationally-renowned tort and legal reasoning expert Professor Jane Stapleton (1980); Dr Anne-Marie Devereux (1991) who coordinated Australia’s first Universal Periodic Review appearance before the Human Rights Council; Canberra barrister and President of the ACT Women Lawyers Association Prue Bindon (2001) and ANU College of Law lecturer Pauline Bomball (2010) whom Naomi considered one of her mentors at the law school.

The 2016 ANU College of Law Jessup team was the first from ANU to win the Australian round of the Jessup Moot in 35 years.

Through the competition, teams of law students compete against one another in simulated proceedings heard by the International Court of Justice. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings – arguing both the case of the applicant and defendant countries – and appear before a bench of volunteer judges, many of whom hold senior positions in law and legal practice.

The success followed three months of extensive preparation for the students, James Barrett, Dan Trevanion, Matilda Gillis, Tara Peramatukorn and William Randles. Their training commenced the day after exams finished in 2015, pausing only for Christmas, until the competition in early February 2016.

They worked closely with ANU Law coaches Kate Ogg and Dr Imogen Saunders.

“It’s the most difficult subject that a law student would do in their degree and the best preparation for legal practice and building advocacy skills,” Kate said.

“The Jessup Moot Competition reflects the highest standard of mooting and its winners are well placed for a career in international law.”

Freilich Indigenous Student Scholarship in Law

D A R C Y J A C K M A NDarcy is a current Juris Doctor student interested in Indigenous development and the law, and how these areas interact to protect the rights of Indigenous people internationally. She hopes to work for the United Nations and is currently a mentor in the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME).

Littleton Groom Memorial Award

S A R A H C A S T L E SThe Scholarship gave Sarah the opportunity to spend 12 months working at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. ANU Law is the only law school in Australia – and one of just four in the world – to offer this opportunity. It has allowed Sarah to spend a year immersing herself in the practical and legal aspects of international arbitration.
