Chile is an enticing and appealing country with spectacular scenery, from the extraordinary landscapes of the Atacama Desert in the north to the dramatic glaciers and granite towers of Patagonia in the south. In this newsletter, we aim to provide more information about the key attractions, with specific emphasis on the hotels and destinations featured in our special Prize Draw.

Santiago Santiago is a modern metropolis against a backdrop of the Andes. On a clear day there are great views from the hills of Santa Lucia and San Cristobal.

The Lastarria area of downtown Santiago is a lively area for music, theatre, restaurants and the arts. Parque Forestal is a couple of minutes’ walk away, the noteworthy Archaeological Museum of Santiago and National Fine Arts Museum are both nearby.

The show at the Bali Hai restaurant provides an introduction to Chilean folklore.

The Atacama desert has been described as Mars on Earth. Others claim it is like the moon. The great salt flats of Salar de Atacama are home to thousands of flamingos. The El Tatio geysers are best at dawn but are at an altitude of 4321m. Easter Island Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is one of the remotest inhabited islands in the world, famous for its enormous stone statues (‘moai’). We recommend a stay of at least three full days here to explore the island. The first report of the famous statues came from the Dutch admiral, Jacob Roggeven, who visited in 1722. By the time of Captain James Cook’s visit in 1774 many had been toppled. Easter Island also has petroglyphs and a hieroglyphic writing (‘rongo rongo’) which has not yet been fully deciphered. Australis Cruise Punta Arenas is the embarkation point for the wonderful 5 day/4 night Australis cruises through the Magellan Strait and Beagle Channel to reach Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). Australis also offers a shorter 3-night round trip journey to Brooks Glacier, Ainsworth Bay and Parry Glacier or longer itineraries of 5, 6 or 7 nights. Lakes District Puerto Varas, on the western shore of Lake Llanquihe, is an ideal base from which to explore the towns, lakes and volcanoes that characterise the Chilean Lake District. The archipelago of Chiloé is located thirty minutes by ferry from Puerto Montt. The colourful houses (‘palafitos’) on stilts over the water, are a distinctive feature of Castro, the capital. We recommend the spectacular Andean Lakes Crossing to Bariloche in Argentina. Antarctica & the Falkland Islands We can easily combine a trip to southern Chile with the Falklands, or to King George Island, in the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
